This family home in Canada originally had a "prairie style" architecture that the designers sought to transform into a modern interior while retaining elements of its original soul. The designers enlarged window openings on the south side to take advantage of river views. They highlighted the home's horizontality through terraces on each end and the use of light, pale materials and colors to enhance interior spaces. Existing elements like a central stone chimney were conserved to preserve the heart of the family home. The redesign successfully created a contemporary interior that respected the building's original character.

The challenge of designing the Du Tour Residence revolved around
successfully transforming the home’s interior into a contemporary space
without losing its soul and the memories associated with it. Here’s
where Montreal-based architecture firm, Architecture Open Form of-
fered a creative way of working around the design of the house to create
a modern outlook while retaining its distinctive rustic details.
In collaboration with the interior design firm FX Studio par Clairoux,
Architecture Open Form developed a solid concept through highlight-
ing the horizontality of the building’s "prairie style” architecture and
reintroducing the use of natural wood. In addition, the openings on the
south side were enlarged on both levels to offer impressive views of the
river and the surrounding natural area in the heart of the living area.

DU TOUR RESIDENCE @ CANADA
To respect the building’s horizontality, great importance was attributed
to movement within the space, the perspectives it offered and its distinct
horizontal volumes. Additionally, light materials and pale, nuanced
colours were also used to enhance the quality and volume of the space.
25. 007CreativeHomeX.com
To respect the building’s hori-
zontality, great importance was
attributed to movement within the
space, the perspectives it offered
and its distinct horizontal volumes.
Additionally, some existing ele-
ments, including the huge central
chimney of natural stone were
conserved to preserve the heart of
the family home. Light materials
and pale, nuanced colours were
also used to enhance the quality
and volume of the space.
The horizontality of the resi-
dence’s "prairie style” is underlined
by terraces at each end that are
covered by the continuous wood
roof. The first, to the northeast,
overlooks a small stream flowing
into Rivière des Prairies. Connected to the kitchen
and dining room, it has become a place of meditation
in the morning. At the other end, more than 110 feet
away, the second terrace faces south and is con-
nected to the gym and sauna which are located in the
basement. It houses an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace,
a dining room, a relaxation area and a spa. Enclosed
by its roof with its cedar shutters and vegetation, this
space has become a haven of peace.
The mix of stone, masonry and wood in the transfor-
mation of this latter terrace is very much in the style
of the original house. To enhance the warm feeling
of its cedar ceiling, the existing steel structure was
replaced by a structure of solid cedar. Cedar posts
and screens with insertions of stained cedar unite the
wood ceiling and the ceramic floor.

THE PHARMACY 2 @ LONDON
Prominent English artist,
entrepreneur, and art collec-
tor, Damien Hirst has recently
opened a new restaurant in
collaboration with Chef Mark
Hix. Whimsically named
Pharmacy 2 and located in the
heart of the Newport Street
Gallery in Vauxhall, London,
the restaurant serves tradi-
tional British, European and
Mediterranean specialities to
the Gallery’s visitors during the
day, and in the evening after
the gallery is closed.
Newport Street Gallery is the realisation of Hirst’s long-term
ambition to share his art collection with the public. Entry to the
gallery, which is currently showing an exhibition of work by the
British abstract painter John Hoyland (1934–2011), is free. While
the gallery itself will continue to host exhibitions of other artists'
work, Pharmacy 2 gives visitors the opportunity to view some of
Hirst’s own art, which here reflects his interest in science, through
medicine and pharmaceuticals.
The restaurant exhibits site-specific work from a number of Hirst’s
most iconic series, including the Medicine Cabinets and butterfly
Kaleidoscope paintings. It also features etched glass windows
depicting DNA strands, marble inlayed flooring and a bar that
incorporates a stainless steel and glass vitrine. Individually crafted
pill designs are embedded into the marble floor as well as embroi-
dered onto the leather banquettes.
29. 011CreativeHomeX.com
THE PHARMACY 2 @ LONDON
Thanks to a long tradition in the process-
ing of marble and to the use of cutting-edge
technologies, leading marble manufacturer
Margraf was chosen by the Caruso St John
Architects firm to create an extremely origi-
nal floor for the restaurant. The brief called
for a white surface of marble resin, inlaid
with 21 large pills, carved using new genera-
tion waterjet machinery, finished by hand,
and made with 35 types of brightly coloured
fine marbles (green, red, yellow, blue, pink,
blue, etc.). It is, above all, a spectacular
match of workmanship and technology.
On the opening of the restaurant, Hirst
commented: "Pharmacy 2 combines two
of my greatest passions; art and food. I’ve
always loved Mark as a chef and his ap-
proach to food, so it’s great we’re working
together on this."
The menu at Pharmacy 2 reflects Hix and
Hirst’s shared passion for quality food made
from fresh ingredients. Hix added: “Damien
and I have been friends for many years, shar-
ing a love of food and art. Damien designed
a formaldehyde ‘Cock and Bull’ for my res-
taurant Tramshed so it makes sense for me
to exchange my skills by creating the menus
at Pharmacy 2."

ELMA ARTS @ISRAELANI VILLA @ SRI LANKA
Perched atop a bluff overlooking a stretch of white sand beach, the Ani Villa located in Dikwella
at the South coast of Sri Lanka is truly a sight to behold. Designed by AW2, an international ar-
chitecture and interior design office based in Paris, France, the sprawling 15-bedroom beachfront
property is designed to offer travel aficinadoes a private luxury vacation experience.
“The first thing that strikes you when seeing the site for the first time at Ani Villa Dikwella is the
beauty and drama of the site,” say architects Réda Amalou and Stephanie Ledoux of AW2 . “You
arrive at the top, where the 4.5 hectares of land slope down under your feet all the way to a
thick, planted edge sitting 9 metres above the sea and beach below. The site and the topography
were, from the start, a major influence on the design. We had to make the site work with steep
slopes while maintaining a low impact on the landscape and gardens.”
According to the architects, the project has been organised as a series of clusters where each
one of them has been created as separate pavilions. The clusters are then linked together with
a series of ramps across the site that links all parts of the villa. Here, the ramps and clusters are
all lined in dark stone retaining walls, creating a geometry of walls within the landscape, cutting
through the greenery, creating platforms, holding pathways. Throughout, stone has been used as
a unifying material.
The architects add: “From the reception pavilion, at the highest point of the site, you can em-
brace the view out to the ocean and see the whole site below. However, the clusters are mostly
hidden in the landscape and within the topography, half dug in, with only the silver grey roofs
in the greenery.”
32. 014 CreativeHomeX.com
ANI VILLA @ SRI LANKA
For the buildings, they have been designed as standalone timber frame structures, sitting
delicately atop the retaining walls. Each pavilion has a large overhanging roof – in iron wood
shingles - that protects and shades the walls and windows. These facades have been designed
in a strict rhythm of vertical panels, alternating stone and windows for the rooms. Coming
to the main structures, which house the living areas, they are built as double height timber
frame structures, clad in louvered shutters which allow for natural ventilation – the architects
wanted to avoid air conditioning in these areas – and offer a rich play on light at night.
As a whole, the clusters are all organised to enhance the inside/outside feel. The architects
have designed for them to extend out, to the terraces, open pavilions, pool decks, and pools.
Overall the design seamlessly integrates architecture and outdoor spaces. The architecture
opens itself to the exteriors.
“This intricate weaving of ins and outs create a strong sense of place for the guest as each
part of building or pavilion offers an outdoor aspect: sea view, ponds, fountains, paths,
terraces, plunge pools…. the tropical elements are always present,” say the architects.
“They are here as a response to the climate, but not only that. We chose to use these
codes – large overhangs, timber frame and natural ventilation – and define our own, more
contemporary language.
When it comes to the landscape, it has not been conceived as a front lawn, but also crafted
as an extension of the architectural spaces. “The landscape was carefully laid out to provide
a feel of tropical, lush gardens in some parts and to create more open areas with structured
planting – for instance, the line of frangi-
pani in front of the pool; lawns and strong
hardscape features, such as the wall fountains
or the water path,” say the architects. “The
fountains are built as large stone walls, which
are clad in recuperated clay tiles that form an
intricate wall pattern upon which the water
trickles down. The pools are also designed
as outdoor living areas where you can spend
time, with shaded swimming, in water loung-
ing, shaded lounging daybeds, pool dining…”
34. 016 CreativeHomeX.com
ANI VILLA @ SRI LANKA
To complement the outlook of
the spaces, a meticulous selection
of materials has been carried out
to give the entire property an
eclectic but decisively contempo-
rary ambience throughout. “The
materials we used for the interiors
are a direct extension of the
architectural materials, with very
simple materials, natural colours
– brown, grey and beige – and
strong textures – rough cut stone,
flamed granite, soft terrazzo. This
again reinforces the coherence
we were trying to attain in our
design,” the architects share.
Most of the furniture at Ani Villa
was custom-designed for the
project, giving it a unique feel.
The architects explain further:
“We also designed the interiors,
where we extended the same idea: create a sense of place, use the local and
reinvent our own furniture. The ‘Lanka chair’ was developed for the project. It
is probably the most iconic furniture designed there.”
But that’s not all, AW2 was also tasked to include elements that were disabled-
friendly. “Aside from being asked to design a unique property at Ani Villa,
we were also asked to make the buildings and landscape fully accessible to
wheelchair use. The challenge resided in the strong slopes of the existing land,
the ‘pavilion’ architecture with outdoor accesses at different levels and also in
trying to make it seamless. The rooms are the same, the equipment is the same
for all. In this way, the experience is the same, erasing differences,” conclude
the architects.
All these translates into a serene property that brings the best of everything
under one roof - the property combines contemporary tropical architecture
with the finest bespoke finishes and furnishings. On top of this, a spa, over-
sized oceanfront pools, dedicated children’s pools with exciting waterslides,
and a plethora of spaces for dining and entertainment were included. Addi-
tionally, an event pavilion and related facilities also allow the property to host
a wide range of events including weddings and corporate retreats.

"By the durable embedding of blossoms in
glass, the fragility of nature in this moment
is conserved; the plants becomes objecti-
fied and are transported into the living area.
Through the individual choice of flowers the
basic commodity becomes unique."
A variety of floral specimens was first col-
lected over different seasons. These include
flower heads, leafy twigs and wildflowers
with their stems intact. Harde then dried
and pressed them in a course of three full

Botanically-inspired, Meike Harde's latest
Evergreen Platters collection of tableware
offers an ensemble of blossoms and foliage
that has been decoratively embedded into
glass plates – or “platters” as this German
designer calls them. Instead of convention-
ally painting or having the floral motifs
enamelled on the surface of the plates,
Harde wanted the flowers to be captured
visibly from either side of the circular trans-
parent platters.
"By referencing traditional floral orna-
mentation, the glass plates blend into the

were set between two layers of glass and
the platters were "baked" at high temper-
atue in a vaccuum oven. Once ready, the
platters offer a beautiful three-dimensional
appearance of the floral specimens which,
according to Harde, give a new definition to
floral tableware.
"Since antiquity nature-inspired mo-
tives have been represented in commod-
ity objects, particularly in the context of
tableware, blossoms are a central stylistic
device. Accordingly, the Evergreen Platters
expresses this traditional tableware motive,
but uses real flower parts."

design. What is about design that you like?
I love designing jewellery. I love interior
design. I love to hack the way things work.
I even get geeky with designing processes
at times. Design is an occupational hazard,
when I go about daily affairs; my eyes are
constantly scanning things (shapes, sizes,
designs) sometimes I get annoyed by how
things work. Annoying experiences can
sometimes light up the bulb in my mind, and
I see how some things should work instead
of current processes. I like to simplify,
cut down on energy output (because I am
extremely lazy), I aspire to green, reduce,
reuse, but at the same time I have to marry
that with my love for luxury and see how I
can make things work in a pleasing sense.
Where does your inspiration come from?
It can come from anything. A conversation.
A lack. A dissatisfaction. I am a natural
trouble-shooter, and otherwise a busybody,
so I always think up solutions. Curiosity
plays a huge part in harvesting inspiration.
Most of my days, I try to stay close to my
sources of inspiration (the good kind, not
the annoyances)... It has somewhat become
a discipline, every day I make myself create
a little something, even if it was just some
words of observation in the form of a poem.
Can you share with us a little about your
muse – Harry Putter?
I started painting the Rooftop Cats in 2011
after the Bald Empathy Movement. A year
later, he showed up outside my gate. I was
actually going through a difficult time –
making ends meet was challenging for a new
artist. That year, I had a surgery, my produc-
tion studio roof collapsed and I did not have
the money to repair the situation. The space
I used for working on large canvases was
consistently damp and mouldy by torrential
rainfall. Those were some dark months. One
day, I was admiring a handsome tuxedo cat
online and the very next day, a tuxedo kitten
showed up outside my gate. I named him
Harry Putter (after a hairy golfer I saw at
the RSGC putting green) while his Chinese
name literally means ‘dark night
white rabbit’. Harry Putter was the white
rabbit who appeared during my dark times.
I often joke that he jumped out of a canvas
from my Rooftop Cats series and fell off the
roof when my place collapsed.
You’ve been through so much in life – what
has been your greatest achievement so far?
I’m not chasing achievements – instead
I collect experiences and keep the best
friendships. It sounds mad but I want to
change the world, and I have decided to do
many small things to get there. My life quota
is simply by touching one life at a time,
changing one mindset at a time, one leader-
Can you tell us a little about how your de-
sign journey began?
I was always interested in art, aesthetics
and functional design. I started formal art
training in 4 genres of classical Chinese art
when I turned 6, together with music theory
and piano. After high school, I was keen in
fashion and design. My father was the one
who encouraged me to pick up something
more challenging, so I decided to study
architecture engineering. Although I don’t
practice architecture as much now, design is
a huge part of who I am – I love creating and
designing things that I am unsatisfied with,
like clothes, jewellery, furniture and space. I
guess all my work space (production studio
and gallery) are good examples of how I

ship mentorship exchange program for final
year university students diversely skilled in
the creative language. I have been work-
ing on rebranding goodness since I started
with Helping Angels in 2007. Many projects
I started years ago are still rolling and I am
continuously picking up causes I find worth-
while – it'll be a busy decade ahead. POEZ,
my jewellery brand is celebrating its’ 11th
year soon. Recently my family was in crisis,
and it made me reflect deeply upon the
meaning of being a good daughter. An instal-
lation piece is coming out of this topic
(filial piety) this year to highlight this old
school value that is losing its’ footing in the
modern society. I am also experimenting
with my love for mini bonsai and gardening
for an art project that will possibly take a
good decade to mature.
Well, you’ve certainly got your hands full! All
the best for future Poesy! Lastly, best piece
of advice for aspiring designers?
Be willing to put in the hard work. Be
humble and learn from everybody – make
friends, be productive and disciplined. Find
good mentors, stay away from negative
people and do not cultivate the sense of
entitlement ever – success is not a given.

ship shift at a time. In that sense, I don’t
really think of achievements. Just that I am
here to do what I am meant to do.
What’s your main focus of design currently?
High design must be approached with
empathy, be functional and accessible to all
– at the same time it has to look good too.
These days I try to be as green as possible,
to reduce carbon footprint – while I design
inclusively to be accessible to users with
special needs. Accessibiity in architectural
design must not be an afterthought nor
should it be to fulfil legal requirements.
My art direction will be putting out more
messages on greening the world and these
social values I'm passionate about. As a
designer, it’s my social responsibility to re-
duce the carbon footprints of the end users
and I can do that through my designs and
products. While I do that, I also use my art to
raise the level of kindness towards human-
ity as well as mother earth.
What’s next for Poesy?
There's a lot in the pipeline and I will be
traveling a lot. I've been working on a short
animation film since 2013; simultaneously,
I'm creating merchandise to reach a wider
audience and we are in the midst of devel-
oping Poesyliang.com with an e-commerce
platform, so I can get more sustainable
and benefit more people. My skirts label
(Pocket Poesitivity + Twirling Tutu) started
selling in January and my KL Poesy Liang art
gallery will potentially extend for another
18 months. Although people expect art-
ists to be bad in business, I happen to love
entrepreneurship, especially in spotting
opportunities for social good. We are also
developing the Poesy Prize - a youth leader-

Celebrating it’s 7th year in May 2016, the Clerkenwell Design Week
will once again attract the international design community to this small
area of London for three days of exciting events.
edited / lily wong images / cdw press office layout / boon ting ting
Hundreds of new products will launch this year at Clerkenwell Design Week, from small
home accessories to large investment pieces. Held from 24th to 26th May 2016 in Clerk-
enwell, London, a dynamic area, with a long tradition of creative industries stretching back
to the Industrial Revolution, where craft workshops, printmakers, clockmakers and jewel-
ers thrived, it is also one of the most important design hubs in the world and home to more
creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet. To
celebrate this rich and diverse community, Clerkenwell Design Week has created a show-
case of leading UK and international brands and companies presented in a series of show-
room events, exhibitions and special installations that take place across the area.
This year, there will be eight main exhibition venues to explore, full of the latest and best
new products in contemporary design from Britain and beyond. Each venue has a distinct
offering, showing the breadth of creativity that makes CDW such an important part of the
London design calendar.
Exhibition venues include four new, specially made structures, as well as firm favourites
such as the Crypt on the Green and the House of Detention. Running north to south the
venues are; Design Fields (curated contemporary design), Platform (up-and-coming design-
ers), Project (leading international brands), Additions (interiors products), British Collection

(UK designers), Detail and Detail Pavilion
(luxury interiors) and Icon’s House of Culture
(international).
Additionally, there will be Clerkenwell
Design Week’s programmed series of talks,
discussion and debates. A world-class
arena in which to introduce and discuss new
products, raise industry issues and net-
work with fellow A&D professionals, these
programmed and specially created events
take place across the participating show-
rooms and fringe venues at CDW. Designers
involved in programme previously have in-
cluded Michael Young, David Adjaye, Edward

FOTILE SPECIAL
Actress, singer and full-time super mum
– Diana Rafar, 33, recently prepared a deli-
cious meal for us in her super chic kitchen at
her home. Even though she lives a busy life
in the spotlight, one thing she holds close to
her heart is her family, making sure that she
spends time with her two kids Kashfi Haiqal
and Haiqal Izzat, and her husband, Zamarul
Hisham, actor, whenever she can. And what
better way to spend quality time with the
family over a tasty home-cooked feast.
Chatting to Diana whilst she was preparing
and cooking several dishes for us, we found
out just how much the new Fotile W hood
has enhanced her home life.
“Just look at this Fotile hood. And look at
what I am making! In the past, this house
would be filled with grease and smoke by
now, but with technology like Fotile W, all
the smoke is instantly extracted so I can see
exactly what I’m making.”
And it is true – no smoke is hazing the
kitchen and no traces of oil greasing up the
surfaces – the Fotile W is truly a must-have
innovation in all Malaysian homes. How ex-
actly does it make your kitchen grease and
smoke free? – Because of the broader hood
style and its wider extraction zone, absorb-
ing and trapping smoke and oil.
With its powerful extraction and effective
filtration of smoke and grease however, an-
other fantastic feature that Diana especially
loves is just how quiet it is.
“You hear that? It’s so quiet. Previously, if I
shouted for my kids they would not be able
to hear me over the noisy extraction, but
now, the Fotile W with its High Efficient Ex-
traction Technology and low noise levels as
low as 49decibles means that everyone has
to answer me.” She says laughing.“That’s
one feature I love about this hood.”
As she continues to cook, Diana explains

more of the features of Fotile W that make
her life that bit easier in the kitchen.
“There’s no smelly odour in the kitchen
whatsoever after cooking, as the Fotile W
has an odour reduction exceeding 95%. This
is especially great for homes that have an
open layout meaning unpleasant odours will
no longer flow from the kitchen to the living
spaces. What’s even better is that it’s super
easy to clean. All you do is open the wing
like-surround suction plate of the hood and
wipe the traces of oil. It saves me time so I
can have more time to eat and spend time
with my family.”
Elegant and stylish, the Fotile W has clearly
made the busy mum’s life easier. Packed
with advanced technology, the stain-
less steel hood blends effortlessly in any
kitchen. As Diana says the Fotile W is,“…
sleek and sexy!”

A REVOLUTIONARY COOKER HOODWith its Surround Suction Technology, Fotile’s new W series will take
cooking to the next level like never before.
Introducing its brand new series of hoods, Fotile
W series, Fotile has revolutionised the kitchen and
way we cook. Featuring 5 models, the W series is
ever-so-stylish with its sleek stainless steel surface
that will blend into any kitchen seamlessly. Mak-
ing your home environment cleaner and visibly
clearer when cooking, its wing-like surround suc-
tion technology allows wider grease and smoke
control zone as well as wider suction area.
Thanks to its ‘High Efficient Extraction Technol-
ogy’ the W series is capable of extracting grease
and smoke at a faster rate, more mightily, yet at
a low noise level at only 49 decibels. For purer
air, the W series has an oil filtration rate of 95%,
with odour reduction at the rate of 97%, which
means you can cook up anything without the
worry of the smells floating around the home.
With each of the model coming with an
Automatic Turbo System, the smart hood will
automatically increase fan power when it detects
that the exhaust is low in pressure. Additionally,
the smart smoke and sound detection system,
ADVERTORIAL / FOTILE
when it detects the sound of heavy cooking, will
automatically switch to the most powerful mode
to extract grease and smoke effectively. This
function is only available in EMS9017.
User-friendly with a soft-touch control, the cool
and elegant hood operates with a gentle touch.
With a large stainless steel oil cup, energy-saving
LED lights and a shut-down delay function,
the hood is easy to clean, so preparing meals
couldn’t be easier or healthier.
You can finally cook in peace with the
ever-so quiet Fotile W hood with a low
noise level of only 49db.

Alex elaborates,“You can see many things that are connected to the
spaces in this show unit – like that room at the back is now a study
which has a hexagon design. This was inspired by the periwinkle, a type
of flower that is shaped like a hexagon. We used the hexagon concept
as a study book rack, and then brought it forward to the courtyard.”
Another highlight of the show unit’s interior design is the composition of
raw building materials, such as exposed red bricks and raw cement ren-
dering for the wall finishes along with exposed wiring in the living area.
“For this project, we used different materials to bring out the concept.
Inside, there are wires that run along the ceiling and walls, and instead
of using a plaster ceiling or wall to cover it up, we decided to expose
them because aesthetically it would look good as a feature,” Alex says.
“That’s the overall style we wanted to aim for, and when we carried it
out it was actually pretty interesting.” CHx

ART
WITHOUT

OUTDOOR SPECIAL / TRENDS
The unique, patent pending, deiNERI stand’ART
takes two-dimensional art off the wall for the first
time. Recognizing that modern home design – now
more than ever – leverages open floor plans with
little or no distinction between indoor and outdoor
living, deiNERI stand’ART liberates art by making it
free standing: making it an “Art Without Boundaries”.
deiNERI, a new and innovative Montreal-based
company, announced the introduction of stand’ART
recently emphasizing that the new product perfectly
combines art and design to offer new possibilities
for open spaces and outdoor areas. According to
deiNERI, these art pieces serve as practical solu-
tions to challenges of privacy – they can be used to
segregate spaces and manage flow while contribut-
ing aesthetic and emotional expression to any space.
With stand'ART, homeowners, corporate buyers
from the hospitality industry, and design profes-
sionals can now seamlessly introduce paintings,
photographs and other visual-art elements to enrich
terraces, courtyards and open spaces.
“Our distinctive, patent-pending stand’ART concept
was designed by a world leader in industrial design,
ALTO Design Inc., led by Mario Gagnon. No compro-
mises were made on quality. Each unit is precision-
crafted down to the finest detail to offer amazing
possibilities inside and out,” says Nancy Lahaie
co-president at deiNERI.
The stand'ART comprises a modular unit made of
high-quality steel,and exceptional works from up-and-
coming and well-established artists.Special consid-
erations went into the materials selection and multiple
weathering tests were carried out in order to ensure
the greatest durability of the base and the artwork.
“Currently, the deiNERI stand'ART is available in
three formats that can be merged with artwork of
great talents from our debut collection; this inno-
vation can be integrated in thousands of different
looks to perfectly fit any décor and budget”, says
Marie-Claude Marchand co-president at deiNERI.
deiNERI stand’ART is now available for order from

SENSATIONS
Beauty echoes through the raw exposed
textures and surfaces in this home.
Throughout the open living spaces, rough
materials are chicly balanced with softer
furnishings to create a comfy yet styl-
ish space. In the intimate lounge setting,
black, white and grey colours accentuate
the modern concept. Scandinavian-style
furniture is used to further enhance the
contemporary vibe, creating a warm and
cosy space, whilst its simple and minimal-
ist forms complement the dainty and arty
finishing touches. As the open living spaces
feature plenty of brick surfaces and raw
materials, the lounge area combines an
array of softer furnishings, as seen via the
sofa, the rug, the curtains and even the
décor, creating a snugger environment.

COLOURFUL DISCOVERY
COMMERCIAL / RETAIL
At 70 metres square, the Corazys home interior
store designed by Emmanuelle Moureaux
Architecture + Design proves that colours can
do wonders no matter if the space is large or
small. Set within the Galeria-Arts Building in
Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Japan. Corazys puts empha-
sis on only four specific colours – orange, pink,
green and blue.
"There are approximately 150 types of items in
four colours, and they are all "Made in Japan"
quality," explains Emmanuelle Moureaux. "The
concept of the first store to open in Omote-
sando is based on a "library", in that it is filled
with colourful stories. We wanted to create the
experience of finding a novel from a large col-
lection of books; where one discovers a favour-
ite item amidst a colourful collections."

COMMERCIAL / RETAIL
To bring out the concept, large colourful
books are arranged within the tailor-
made shelves to resemble a library
of colours. According to the designer,
although the store appears colourful
when viewed from the outside, the space
inside is partitioned by large shelves
coloured in orange, pink, green and blue.
This is to create a small world of four
distinctive colours. For example, if a
person were to stand between the pink
shelves, they can get a view of the higher
shelves which are filled with books in
different shades of pink. The same colour
goes to the bottom shelves as well where
CHx
a diverse range of home interior items in
different shades of pink are displayed.
"Each item holds a special story, like
taking a novel in your hand in the li-
brary," shares the designer. "In addition,
the world of four colours is connected
through the opening of the shelves layer-
ing colours in front and behind, to allow
customers to enjoy the space wrapped in
a full range of colours."

economic and modernisation policies.
