DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF
STANDING WHEEL CHAIR MEPCO SCHLENK ENGINEERING COLLEGE, SIVAKASI
OBJECTIVE
To design and develop a standing wheel chair in order to overcome the physical issues
of person with leg disability at low cost.
SCOPE
•Identification of problem and causes in the society
•Evaluation of hazards, problem solving (using Fish Bone Technique)
•Development of model using Solid Works 2010
•Design and fabrication of prototype of the standing wheel chair (1000 gram capacity),
Identification of faults in configuration and rectifying them in the main model.
•Testing the standing wheel chair to ensure safety, Rigid body behaviour, centre of
mass and To determine the load to be applied to the hand lever.
•Comparing proposed methodology with present methodology.
Serving the Disabled !!

PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED:
•A person with leg disability may have to use a wheelchair for
his/her entire life
•Spends most of the time seated in one position.
•A real time physical issues such as urinary problem, back pain, ect.
•The wheelchairs that unbend to standing positions cost Rs. 70,000
in India which will not be affordable to common man.
CAUSES, Problem factor:
•Sore body
•Building of pressure points
•Lowered blood circulation due to lack of movements
•Experience painful
•Complications due to long term sitting
Parameters Mainly Focused :
•Safety
•Comfort of the user
•Cost of the wheelchair
•Easy of use
•Easy maintenance
•Durability of the product.
PROTOTYPE AND TESTING
•design is unsure until it is built and tested.
•Initially a prototype was made to evaluate the proof-of-concept.

Why we chose Standing Wheel Chair as a
problem?
Disasters happening in firework industries
(Sivakasi,Virudhunagar district, Tamilnadu) which causes lot of leg
disabled persons between the year of 2011-2012 when compare to
other district, by taking this problem we work on Standing wheel
chair with low cost was developed in order to help those people.

PROBLEM FACED
TESTING RESULTS
•Able-bodied users weighing about 70 kg have tried the model
with good success.
•By operating the hand levers, the user is able to lift himself up to
a standing position and come back down to the seated position.
•The design exhibits good stability for the user in both the seating
and standing positions.
•This device was fully manual and has a strong mechanical
structure.
•The device cost is around Rs10000/.
•The device can be operated with the moderate human effort.
• The device was corrosion resistant , aesthetic and easy to use.
•Capacity of attaining the standing posture all by
their own.
•Low cost
•Health benefits include improved circulation,
urinary health, bowel function and bone density.
•Eye-level interaction with other people, access
to objects at elevated heights.
