This document provides an overview of the results of the European Chamber's 2016 Business Confidence Survey, which found that the business environment in China is becoming more difficult for European companies. While over half of respondents reported increased revenues in 2015, pessimism about future profitability and growth in China reached new highs. Tightened internet controls, inconsistent regulation, overcapacity, and perceptions of unfavorable treatment of foreign businesses were cited as major challenges. The survey suggests that European investment and R&D spending in China may decline unless substantial market reforms are implemented to improve competitiveness, transparency, and national treatment of foreign companies.
