The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent organization that classifies films, videos, DVDs, and video games distributed in the UK according to their age ratings and content guidelines. The BBFC aims to protect children from harmful content, empower the public to make informed viewing choices, and recognize adult freedom of choice within the law. Films are rated U, PG, 12A, 15, or 18 based on their themes, violence, language, drug use, and sexual content. Higher ratings allow for more mature content but still restrict gory or sexually sadistic images.
