BBC Pitch
The Swinging Sixties
Summary
Set in mid to late 1960's
Liverpool, at the height of its
youth culture and music scene,
this series would feature a
friendship of four teenage girls.
The series would showcase the
everyday lives of the girls,
addressing what life was like
during this era, highlighting the
differences between now and
then, the music, The Beatles
and the effect they had on the
people of Liverpool, as well as
the poverty in the city during
this time and the prolonged
effects of World War II.
Genre and
Inspiration
This show would be classed as a teen sitcom that
would include historical accuracies relating to the
time period. While it would have comedic aspects it
would also depict some of the common and
relevant struggles that people experienced during
the sixties.
This TV show takes inspiration from the show
Derry Girls, a show about the lives of a group of
teenage girls living in Northern Ireland during the
90's and the effect the troubles and religion had on
them.
What differs with my show idea is the era of which
the show is set as well as the location, because of
these two differences the characters will have a
whole different everyday life, different interests and
struggles that they must face.
Characters - Pamela
• The most outgoing of the group is Pamela, a very sociable person
who brought the friendship group together.
• Like many young girls during the sixties, Pamela is a huge Beatles
fan and has the biggest obsession out of all her friends.
• At the age of 16, Pamela is continuing her education to receive her
O-Levels, however her real passion is for music.
• Pamela has short, bobbed, ginger hair that resembles that of Cilla
Black.
• Her background includes her working class mother and two
younger siblings, although they don't necessarily struggle, they
aren't well off either. Pamela's dad recently passed away, she has
struggled with this however remains her positive and outgoing self
when in public.
• Her mam pushes her through her education (as Pamela wanted to
leave school at age 15) and doesn't agree with her aspirations for
the music industry.
Characters - Jo
• The second oldest of the group is Jo who is 17.
• Jo is quite a reckless character and tends to act
quickly without thinking, causing her to get into much trouble
at school. She is currently working towards her A-Levels, not
that she really wants to.
• Her background includes her middle-class parents, and she is
an only child. Because of this, when she regularly gets into
trouble, she always gets away with it. Her parents want to
push her as much as possible with her education however Jo
had other plans.
• Jo has an on and off boyfriend called Stuart, however her
friends don't really like him.
Characters - Gina
• Gina is the youngest out of the group and is 16.
• Pamela and Gina became friends at school but are quite different
characters. While Pamela is very relaxed and outgoing, Gina is a
very shy person and tends to hold back when around new people.
• Gina comes from a working-class background and her family
regularly struggle. She is the second oldest out of her five siblings
and because of this has a lot of responsibilities around her home.
• Pushing through her education, Gina is the type of student that
keeps her head down and always tries her hardest as she wants to
create a better life for herself.
• Gina loves her clothes, however, can't afford much for herself but
uses her knowledge and creativity to alter and create new clothes
from what she has.
Characters - Rose
• The oldest of the group is Rose who is 17.
• Rose's character is not necessarily quiet, just more laid back
and only speaks up when she feels that it is necessary.
• She from a working-class background however her parents
are mostly focused on themselves and getting by rather
than Rose and her education, she also has three siblings.
• Rose rarely opens up to people, even her friends and tends to
hold back and has recently stated questioning her sexuality.
Characters
• Altogether the characters don't have much in common besides
going to the same school (although Rose and Jo are in the
year above Pamela and Gina), their love for music and
their frequent trips to the Cavern Club together, they all get on
well.
• The Beatles are what have brought the group together despite
their different interests (aside from music) and each girl has
their own different personal problems.
• Each episode would be dedicated to one specific character,
this episode would highlight their character personally.
Target Audience
The desired target audience for this production would
range significantly, from young people who are similar
ages to the characters now (approximately 15 – 25) and
don't know much about the time period, to older people
who were around the same age of the characters during
the 60's (who would now be around late 60s to early
80s), or just those who have an interest in this era's
music. Most viewers would most likely be female.
The social grade for the target audience is most likely
going to be a mixture, however I would assume that if
there are more younger viewers the social grade would
be mostly D and E.
Many of the audience may come from or currently live in
Liverpool and therefore may relate and want to watch
the show, but that doesn't mean that most of the
audience will have resided there.
The main audience of Derry Girls was of those aged 16
What channel and when
With the primary target audience of this show being
young women ranging from the ages of 15-25, the
most suitable channel for this teen sitcom would be
BBC Three.
BBC Three has broadcasted shows such as Normal
People, Waterloo Road, Some Girls and Bad
Education. All these shows were about young people
and made for young people, with a similar target
audience age range to mine. The only difference with
my show is that it isn't set in this current time period,
like the rest of these shows were.
This type of show (as well as the similar BBC Three
shows that I have listed) would be broadcasted on or
after 9pm, due to the show being made for young
adults and older and therefore would have some
strong language, smoking and other mature themes.
Structure
• Each episode would last approximately 25 minutes, with an episode
focusing on one specific character.
• The episode would show us the relationships that each girl has with her
friends (e.g., who she is closest to), her family dynamic, her behaviour at
school, her main interests, career goals, personal struggles and how they
cope.
• For example, Gina's episode would mention her close relationship with
Pamela, how distant she is to her parents, helping to look after
her younger siblings while balancing schoolwork and maintaining good
grades, and finding the time to style clothes for herself.
• With one episode for each character and a final episode focusing on the
friendship group, in this series there would only be 5 episodes. Depending
on popularity, a second series could be made that shows the girls after
some time has passed and how they have changed and developed as
people (e.g., if they have gotten over certain struggles).
