Context
Cambodia heals its wounds after a long civil war which ended
in the early nineties and has destroyed the education system
and schools. Nowadays, it is one of the poorest countries in
South-East Asia: a third of the population is living below the
poverty threshold and half of the population is under 25.
Education is not very developed with few resources, leading to
a lack of infrastructures and qualified teachers.
Since they cannot afford their children’s scholarship and are not
aware of the importance of education, many families withdraw
their children from school and even send them to work for some
of them.
This is what is happening in the villages located in Angkor
archeological park, where most of the families are very poor
and there is only a few schools, among which Bayon School.
Who are we?
Known under the name of Ecole du Bayon or
Bayon School, our association is registered in
France as « SEP (Soutien à l’Ecole de la Pagode)
du Bayon » and in Cambodia as the NGO « Bayon
Education & Development ».
Our mission
To provide education to the underprivileged children and youth living in the Angkor
temples area and the nearby villages.
Our activities
Bayon School is running two main activities:
• The primary school, which enables around 250 children to
study for free and since 2007, a students follow-up: we support
around 130 former primary school students in public secondary
schools, and even to university for some of them.
• Bayon Pastry School, a vocational training open since
september 2014, which can welcome for free up to 20
underprivileged young Cambodian women.
The primary school
A quality education
The primary school welcomes around 230 children
from grades 1 to 6, which is the complete primary
school cycle in Cambodia. The teachers follow the
national education program, with Khmer, mathematics,
geography, history and morale lessons. To complete
this program, we also provide:
• A one hour English class per day from Grade 2
• Arts and sports activities
Our primary school also includes a kindergarten class
with 19 children.
Bayon Pastry school
• The pastry school strictly selects and trains for free up to
20 underprivileged young women. The training lasts 11
months, including 4 months in internship.
• The students learn pastry in a professional environment,
with quality equipment. They are also given
complementary classes such as English, mathematics,
IT, personal development, etc.
• They are all accommodated in the school for free and we
take care of their bicycle and school material.
