This document summarizes a study that explored how six different professions (social work, medicine, nursing, public health, community psychology, and law) understand the relationship between professional identity and interprofessional collaboration. Fifty professionals participated in structured group exercises and a survey. The study found that most professionals (80%) strongly identified with their own profession, though many (64%) said their identity had become more complex over time. Participants described both strengths and limitations of their own professions in collaborating with others. The results suggest that a strong professional identity can coexist with an ability to collaborate across professions to address complex community problems.
