Working together, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Metropolitan Transportation
Commission (MTC) approved a regional commuter benefits ordinance which became eective on
March 25, 2014.
The program is focused on expanding employer participation in commuter options that in turn will:
DECREASE
TRAFFIC
REDUCE
EMISSIONS
REDUCE
POLLUTANTS
The Program defines an employer as any private, public or non-profit entity with 50
or more full-time employees in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
Employers must provide one or more commuter option to all employees who work 20 or
more hours a week by September 30, 2014. Employers can oer these options:
Pretax benefit to
cover transit or
vanpooling costs
up to $130 per
month.
Subsidy provided
by the employer
to reduce the
employees’ transit
or vanpool
expenses up to
$75 per month.
Free or low cost
transportation
provided by the
employer that
includes bus,
shuttle or vanpool.
Alternative
commuter benefit
that is eective in
reducing vehicle
emissions and sole
vehicle occupancy.
Employers in the defined nine-county area can obtain free information and services from 511.org to
help with creating their program and encourage employees to use transit, carpooling, vanpooling,
biking, walking and telecommuting.
