BAUER FACULTY
3. Ted Bauer, 1919 - 2004
The Bauer College of Business is leveraging the talents, insights and contributions of a
distinguished faculty, a growing list of benefactors, and thousands of alumni to shorten
the distance between students and successful careers. This year’s annual report recog-
nizes many of the “giants” who have emerged from the College and highlights our
progress in creating an environment from which tomorrow’s business leaders are
emerging.
In Memoriam
Our namesake, Ted Bauer, passed away on June 28, 2004. A giant in the mutual
fund industry, Ted said “I don’t dwell in the past. I always look toward the future.” That
attitude gave him, at age 57, the vision to start his own company, AIM Investments,
and the energy to build it into one of the largest fund companies in the world.
His extraordinary $40 million contribution to the University galvanized the faculty, staff,
students and alumni. It provided the resources to expand our faculty significantly.
The inspiration from that commitment continues to power our quest for excellence.
4.
5. 3
As we enter 2005, The Bauer College is focused on the final year of accelerated growth aimed at matching our
profile with that of other flagship public business schools. The planned addition of more than a dozen faculty this
year will complete this phase of our growth. We are on the brink of joining an elite group of schools that is interna-
tionally recognized for its faculty research, business consulting, and innovative programs that produce students who
make an immediate difference in the workplace.
Once we have achieved a critical faculty size, we will turn our attention to the physical environment with an
additional building. The recently completed renovation to our existing Melcher Hall has given Bauer College
students a home to work in that is completely wireless, comfortable and has a Starbucks® ready to deliver a jolt
of caffeine at any hour between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
In November of this year, we’ll undergo re-accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB) to access our progress over the past 10 years. I have no doubt that the good things that have
been happening here will be reflected in the report by Deans of peer schools who will be visiting us. We have
already been honored by an invitation to our Associate Dean, Elizabeth Anderson-Fletcher, to provide a chapter in
the AACSB Best Practices book on Business School Assessment.
We’re proud of our faculty, who continue to receive awards and honors for their professional contributions.
We also take great pride in the success of our alumni. We’re one of the top business schools in terms of producing
major business leaders. Three Bauer graduates are now CEOs of S&P 500 companies. This year we saw another
Bauer alum, Aylwin Lewis, MBA ‘90, BBA Management ‘76, become CEO of Kmart and shortly thereafter, when
Kmart and Sears merged, become President of Sears Holdings, CEO Sears Retail. Additionally, we have many
distinguished alumni who are executives of Fortune 500 companies and large private corporations.
Being located in the energy capital of the world suggests that we’d have a disproportionate number of gradu-
ates in executive positions in energy-related companies. That’s certainly true, but the breadth and quality of our
programs continue to produce leaders in other sectors as well. In areas from retailing (Karen Katz, CEO Neiman
Marcus Stores) to banking (Dominic Ng, Chairman, President & CEO, East West Bancorp and Charles
McMahen, recently retired Vice Chairman of Compass Bank) to finance (Ted Bauer’s $40 million endowment
recognized the role played by our graduates in the success of his organization) to healthcare (David Callender,
Associate Vice Chancellor, UCLA Hospital System Center), Bauer grads are leading prominent businesses and
organizations around the country.
Many of our remarkable graduates are featured in this report. They serve as role models for the next genera-
tion of business leaders. Together with our faculty, staff, partners, and benefactors, I work every day to merit the
confidence our students have placed in us.

14. The Program for Excellence in Selling focuses on the expertise needed
for business-to-business sales of high-value goods and services. The
most important high-value commodity our students learn to sell is them-
selves. Over the course of the program, in addition to specialized
coursework, each student participates in a strategic, progressive real-
world sales challenge. The sales targets are the businesses for which
our students want to work upon graduation, and the process creates
long-term relationships where students learn and businesses receive
access to a continuing source of emerging talent.
Delivering results for the business community
PES works closely with a number of local and regional businesses,
including:
A significant milestone for the program was the establishment of the
College’s Sales Excellence Institute, which also includes the Strategic
Selling and Customer Relationship Management Center and the Global
Sales Research Center. With the assistance of two advisory boards —one
business and one academic—the Institute sponsors and publishes original
research on sales issues.
Reflecting the value that the Institute is providing to local businesses,
Hibernia Bank donated $50,000 to the Institute. “Sooner or later, every
business must make the sale,” said Bob New, President, Hibernia Bank,
Houston, “and it’s amazing to me that very few college programs
approach the topic at all. We credit both the University and the selling
program’s leadership for turning out exactly the kind of people we like
to hire. We’re tremendously excited about our involvement.”

OCTOBER
Building stronger connections
The Program for Excellence in Selling is creating career success for students —and
delivering both top-notch talent and valuable research to area businesses.
The real-world sales challenge
In the first semester, students learn the principles of selling
and role play as buyers and sellers. Then they apply to
enter the PES program. Sixty out of 200 applicants are
accepted every semester.
During the second semester, PES students make personal
calls to local businesses where they are interested in
working. The “sales call” is made to sell jackets, but each
jacket purchased really represents a commitment by the
company to mentor the student. Students also sell tickets
to play in the program’s semi-annual golf tournaments.
The fall 2004 tournament drew a field of 225.
In the final semester, students practice sales management
in teams to meet sales quotas. They sell ads in the PES
magazine, Sellebrations, and tables to the semi-annual
sales career fair. The fall 2004 Sales Mixer drew 72
companies. Students have the option to take Key
Accounts Selling in which they learn how to sell to senior-
level executives. They are accompanied on live sales calls
by PES instructors and staff. They sell corporate partner-
ships and tables to the graduation and induction cere-
monies. During 2004, 23 businesses became PES part-
ners at either $10,000 or $25,000, giving them first
access to hiring opportunities.
