A fantastic way to start the day
is with a visit to Thermae Bath
Spa. Experience Britain’s only
natural thermal water just as
the Celts and Romans did 2,000
years ago. This sparkling oasis in
the centre of Bath is also known
for its thermal treatments and
roof-top pool where you can
enjoy views of the surrounding
cityscape. And if all that soaking
leaves you hungry, head to The
Spa’s cafe where you can enjoy a
lunch or snack.
Bath is a cultural hub; you’ll find
a museum, gallery or attraction
at every turn here. Attractions
such as The Museum of Bath
Architecture, No. 1 Royal
Crescent and the Jane Austen
Centre tell Bath’s story, but
you’ll also find hidden gems
such as the Museum of East
Asian Art and Beckford’s Tower.
Galleries such as the Holburne
Museum and Victoria Art
Gallery are a must for art lovers.
If you have enough time, head a
short distance outside of the city
and you’ll discover even more.
4
Shopping in Bath is a must. If
you’re looking for a change from
bland, uniform high streets,
Bath will delight. Independent
shops and boutiques providing
unique products you won’t find
elsewhere sit alongside all the
well-known high street brands.

buzzing nightlife. For a small
city, Bath is packed with lively
bars and places to dance the
night away! You can also enjoy
live entertainment at the city’s
Georgian Theatre Royal and
Komedia which has frequent live
music and performances.

The UK's only natural thermal
spa is a winning combination of
old and new right in the heart of
the city, its Georgian buildings
blending with the striking
contemporary design of the
glass-encased New Royal Bath.
Echoing how the nearby Roman
Baths were very much a social
hub for all-comers, Thermae
Bath Spa is not an exclusive,
hushed set-up. Rather, it's a
social place to come with a loved
one or group of friends, to lounge
around, chat or simply relax.

SPA&
WELLBEING
Bath is a prime destination
for a restorative break. This
has in fact been the case
since time immemorial,
thanks to the three springs
beneath the city that
produce over a million
litres of hot, mineral-rich
water each day.
T
he said waters have been
attracting visitors to Bath
ever since Prince Bladud,
father of Shakespeare's King
Lear, was cured of leprosy by
bathing here in 863 AD. Well,
that's according to legend. But it's
a fact that Celts, Romans, Saxons,
Normans and Georgians have
all benefitted from and enjoyed
Bath's health-giving and relaxing
natural, thermal waters – just
as you can today at the state-
of-the-art Thermae Bath Spa,
which will be celebrating its tenth
anniversary in 2016.
Thermae Bath Spa Rooftop
Thermae Bath Spa Entrance
Sessions include access to two
thermal pools. The large and
curvaceous indoor Minerva
Bath, set around mushroom-
like columns, has massage jets
and a 'lazy river', while the
open-air rooftop pool basks in
fantastic views across the city.
You can also choose from a
number of treatments including
massages and water therapies.
The pools stay open until
9pm, and the outdoor pool is
particularly special after dark,
whether on a balmy summer's
evening or chilly winter's night.
Spa treats in Bath aren't limited
to Thermae Bath Spa. The
Gainsborough Bath Spa, a five-
star hotel occupying imposing
Georgian buildings just across
the street from Thermae,
opened in 2015, and is the only
place to stay in Britain with
direct access to natural thermal
waters. Along with treatment
rooms, saunas and steam
rooms, the Gainsborough’s
Spa Village has a colonnaded
Romanesque Bath House with
three thermal pools set under a
glass atrium, and in several of
the hotel’s bedrooms you can
even fill your bathtub with the
thermal waters.
6
You can also be pampered in
the spas of The Royal Crescent
Hotel, Macdonald Bath Spa
Hotel and Bath Priory Hotel,
and, in Bath's environs, the
country-house hotels of
Bowood Hotel, Homewood
Park, Lucknam Park and
Woolley Grange all have luxury
spas too. At all of these spas,
sessions and treatments are on
offer to non-residents as well as
hotel guests.

ATTRACTIONS
& MUSEUMS
For a city so small, Bath
has more museums in one
square mile than many
twice its size. Our city’s
many attractions pride
themselves on giving guests
a warm, friendly welcome -
sharing their knowledge and
love of Bath’s exceptionally
rich, historic past in a way
that you will remember
long after you leave. See our
guide for the top picks that
you simply cannot miss.
No.1 Royal
Crescent
To see how the Georgian gentry
and servants lived, pop in to
No. 1 Royal Crescent. Its rooms
are meticulously furnished in
the style of the period.
Fashion Museum
A truly world-class collection
of 30,000 original items of
contemporary and historical
dress. 150 dressed figures
present the changing styles and
fashionable trends from the 16th
century to the present day. There
are always timely and relevant
new exhibitions – and, of course,
the ‘Corsets & Crinolines’
display, where visitors can try
on reproduction garments! A
fashion lover’s paradise.
Sally Lunn’s
Museum
Here, at one of the oldest houses
in Bath (c. 1483), you can view
the excavations that demonstrate
how the site has refreshed
travellers since Roman times. The
actual kitchen used by the young
Huguenot baker more than 300
years ago is also preserved as part
of this ‘living’ museum.
Roman Baths
With steaming baths, hypocaust
(underfloor heating) systems,
and the remains of the temple
to Sulis Minerva, Bath’s most
popular attraction is a strong
contender for the UK’s most
fascinating Roman site – for
visitors of any age. After dusk,
the baths are lit by torches and
are particularly atmospheric.

Bath Abbey
A place of worship for more
than 1,200 years, the Abbey is
very much a living church today.
With its beautiful stained-glass
windows, majestic stone columns
and spectacular vaulted ceilings,
this is a very uplifting place to
absorb the architecture, learn
about its past, listen to choral
music or simply enjoy a peaceful
moment of contemplation.
The Jane Austen
Centre
Devoted to Bath’s most famous
resident, this premier attraction
is designed to give you a unique
insight into Jane Austen’s
experience of living in Bath
and the effect that this had on
her writing. A warm welcome
awaits, with ‘live’ costumed
guides and an impressive
permanent exhibition of
exclusive film, costumes,
maps, books and much more.
Herschel Museum
of Astronomy
On 13th March 1781, William
Herschel discovered the planet
Uranus, while observing from
the garden of his house! The rest,
as they say, is history and it all
lies here, including an amazing
Star Vault, the workshop where
he made his telescopes and a
stargazer’s dream garden.
9
The Holburne
Museum
With a grand historic façade,
stunning rear glass elevation and
lawned gardens, this handsome
building contains a fascinating
art collection, including
Gainsborough masterpieces,
Renaissance treasures and
contemporary installations.
There's a fantastic programme
of exhibitions plus free, fun art
activities and creative workshops
which you can book in advance.
Borne out of a transatlantic
alliance, this intriguing museum
is the only one outside the US to
showcase the decorative arts of
America. There’s a Folk Art Gallery
and wonderful Period Rooms, as
well as an outstanding collection
of more than 200 quilts. Weekly
Quilting Bees create a special
opportunity for visitors to watch
local groups at work.

for its friendly atmosphere

SHOPPING
When it comes to retail therapy, Bath really does
offer it all. What makes shopping in our compact city
centre so distinctive is that as well as the expected
high-street brands, we have an amazing number
of independent stores, selling items you won’t find
anywhere else. We also offer the ultimate antidote
to bland, mall-centric shopping: here in Bath, most
of our shops are spread around elegant Georgian
streets, and are integral to the fabric of the city.

The Guildhall Market is the oldest shopping venue in the
City and today a colourful group of 20 or so stallholders
trade in this jewel in the heart of the City. Housed in a
spectacular Victorian building next to the Guildhall and
just yards from Bath Abbey, the market caters for virtually
everything you need under one roof and it's always service
with a smile and the personal attention one always gets
when dealing with family run businesses! The magnificent
central dome of the Market built 1861 is a must to see,
as is the famous 'Nail' on which for centuries traders and
merchants would exchange cash for goods! Ever heard of
the saying 'Pay on the nail' - it all started here!
At Christmas things really step-up and the excitement and
buzz of Bath Guildhall Market's annual Christmas Market
is not to be missed. Extending out of the building, large
centrally heated marquees are erected in the car park at the
rear housing an amazing array of fabulous seasonal gifts for
everyone. There's also a licenced bar serving locally brewed
Abbey Ales beers, hot mulled wine and‘ live entertainment
throughout the day. The Christmas Market runs every year
from the last Thursday of November for 18 days.

The Corridor has been a prime destination for shoppers
in the South West of England ever since the arcade was
opened on 12 October 1825. Following in the steps of the
fashionable shopping arcades of Paris, London’s Burlington
Arcade (built in 1819) and The Corridor became Britain’s
first examples of indoor, covered arcades. Over 10,000
people and local dignitaries attended the opening of the
arcade which was designed and built by local architect
Henry Edmund Goodridge.
Steeped in history, the listed Georgian Arcade has had
its fair share of famous traders and is now home to a
collection of Bath’s highest quality independent retailers
alongside high street names such as; Superdry, Scribbler,

SHOPPING
O
ver centuries past, Bath
and beyond has developed
a wonderful reputation
for the quality of its food and
drink. And now, with three
Michelin-starred restaurants, a
wealth of home-grown (and still
growing) culinary talent, superb
local ales and ciders, plus many
small but amazing independent
businesses and a food festival,
this little city is ‘big’ on all the
things that matter.
Here’s a real flavour of where to go,
what to expect – and enjoy!
Tale of
two buns
You’ll perhaps have heard
mention of Bath’s famous bun,
but did you know we have
two? Sally Lunn’s Bun is round
brioche in style, and the secret
recipe is passed on only with
deeds of Sally Lunn’s House.
The fruited Bath Bun, available
at the Bath Bun Tea Shoppe
and a number of locations
around the city is closely linked
to a Dr William Oliver (of Bath
Oliver biscuit fame). Time to
put history to the taste test!
Elegant and charming
cafés, great gastro pubs,
cool bars and the very best
in fine dining – Bath and
its surrounding areas will
surprise and delight you
with the diversity of its
offering and, of course, its
historic and scenic settings.

Gastropubs
Those seeking a gastronomic pub
treat will not be disappointed
by the likes of The Chequers on
River St., Bath Brew House on
James St. West and The King
William on London Rd. On the
south side of the city, Graze
Brewery & Chophouse on Brunel
Sq. deserves a mention. Modern
British menus are in plentiful
supply and so is the traditional
Sunday roast.
You'll be equally spoilt for choice
if you want to experience our
finest real ales and wonderful
local ciders. Some of the best
are at The Raven on Queen St.,
Crystal Palace on Abbey Green or
The Salamander on John St.
If you’re vegetarian, you’ll love
the extraordinary Acorn
Vegetarian Kitchen.
Time for tea
In Bath, we have a number of
elegant and quirky places to
enjoy a tea or coffee stop.
Experience the ultimate in
Georgian refinement in the
famous Pump Room. If vintage
style appeals, try Bea’s on Saville
Row, where tea is served by red
lipstick-clad waitresses.
For coffee with a heavenly slice
of cake, head to Courtyard Café
on North Parade Passage. The
Metropolitan Café on New Bond
St. excels in sweet treats. Real
coffee lovers will find Rosario’s
Café on Northumberland Place
a perfect haven.

Marlborough Tavern combines the atmosphere of a local

no wonder they've won the Bath Gastropub of the Year title

Food is essentially, though not slavishly, British in character
and takes advantage of locally sourced produce wherever
possible. Their food reputation is matched by their service -
always attentive without being intrusive.

Hall & Woodhouse is a spectacular pub restaurant from the
238 year-old Dorset brewers of Badger Ales. Located in a former
auction house in the heart of Bath, the venue is simply stunning and
was judged by the Sunday Mail to be one of the city’s six must-see
venues, describing it as “the talk of the town”.
A spiralling staircase leads up from the ground floor bar to the first
floor dining room, and onto the roof terrace – the only one in Bath and
voted ninth best in the UK byTheTimes. Spread over three floors and
featuring an impressive copper bar, potting shed, pantry and common
room, the warmly lit and sumptuously furnished interior evokes a
country estate feel, linking back to the brewery in Blandford Forum.
Hall & Woodhouse caters for all eating and drinking occasions, from
breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner to coffee and beautifully made
cakes. With an emphasis on British products, attention to detail and
just a touch of theatre, the cuisine is straightforward and familiar
rather than elaborate and experimental – a British interpretation
of the bistro and brasserie concept.

horses, and the Kennet and Avon canal.
Your first stop may be Bradford on Avon, a
bustling market town, packed with specialist
shops and galleries. The River Avon runs
through, and the ancient bridge in the centre
provides a pictureseque viewpoint.
Corsham is another attractive market town.
Close by is Corsham Court, set in 17 acres of
glorious gardens.
Other Wiltshire villages of note include the
quintessentially English Lacock and Castle
Combe. A big highlight is the impressive house
and safari park at Longleat, with its wild
animals, boat cruises and priceless treasures.

Somerset - Steam Train
Plan ahead and discover some of
the unique places en route to Bath.
There’s always time for a tasty meal,
snack or scenic detour.
Somerset
For a magical blend of history
and legend, the Mendip hills
and Somerset Levels are hard
to beat.
The Mendip district's most
famous town must be
Glastonbury, linked to the
legends of King Arthur and
reputedly the birthplace of
Christianity in England and
nowadays to its world-famous
music festival.
Wells is England's smallest city,
boasting many beautiful
medieval buildings, including
the moated Bishop's Palace and
Cathedral.
Not far from here are the famous
Wookey Hole Caves, Cheddar
Gorge – Britain’s biggest gorge –
and the stunning Cheddar Caves.
Nearby Radstock is one of the
best preserved former coal-
mining towns in England and
has been awarded conservation
area status. Visit the Radstock
Museum for an introduction to
the area.
The Cotswolds
Bath is set on the southern
edge of The Cotswolds, a series
of gently rolling hills and
honey-coloured villages that are
quintessentially English. This is
an area of stone walls, hidden
river valleys, and distinctive
market towns and villages made
of the famous Cotswold stone.
Bristol
Take a short journey west of the city
and you’ll discover Bath’s big, urban,
multicultural neighbour. Highlights
include its fascinating maritime heritage,
including the SS Great Britain, the
redeveloped waterfront, iconic home-
grown street art (Banksy), and the lovely
Georgian neighbourhood of Clifton and
its photogenic suspension bridge.

Take a full or half day tour of the
many great places mentioned

Dating from 1829, Royal Victoria
Park is Bath's main green lung.
Its 57 acres extends westwards
from the scenic grassy swathe
below The Royal Crescent to a
superb children's playground and
the secluded Botanical Gardens.
Laid out for the Georgians in
1795, pretty Sydney Gardens is
even older. In the 19th century,
the Kennet and Avon Canal and
Brunel's Great Western Railway
were cleverly landscaped in to
the setting.
Bath's most central green spot
is riverside Parade Gardens.
With its deckchairs and regular
concerts in the bandstand, the
gardens provide a snapshot of a
traditionally English scene.
On the city's southern slopes
lies Prior Park Landscape
Garden. Designed in the 18th
century by the poet Alexander
Pope and famous landscape
architect Capability Brown, the
grounds descend to a Palladian
bridge and lakes.

OUTDOORS
Historic parks & gardens
Bath is blessed with lovely parks, glorious countryside
on its fringes, and a beautiful canal and river. If you're
intent on getting exercise during your visit, we can
offer some outstanding walks and bike rides.
Take a stroll
Put your walking boots on and
tackle all or some of the Bath
Skyline walk - the National Trust's
most downloaded walking tour.
Starting on the southern edge
of the city, the six-mile, circular
route offers memorable views
across Bath.
Or head off through the lovely,
rolling countryside north
of Bath on the linear Cotswold
Way. For a much gentler amble,
you could follow the tranquil
Kennet and Avon Canal out to
Bathampton village.

Boating in Bath
View the city and countryside
from the water. On the River
Avon, put your feet up and
take a skippered cruise from
Pulteney Bridge, or take matters
into your own hands by hiring a
punt, rowboat or canoe. On the
Kennet and Avon Canal, rent a
narrowboat for a day or longer.
For more on walking and cycling
routes, bike rentals and boating
options, see visitbath.co.uk.
Potter about on two wheels
While Bath is small enough to discover on foot, a bike is
a great way to explore beyond the city's limits.
The 13-mile Bath Two Tunnels Circuit leaves the city
via two recently opened, dramatically lit former train
tunnels – the Combe Down Tunnel is Britain's longest
cycle tunnel.
Or head west out of the city through open countryside
on the Bristol & Bath Railway Path.

  • 4. A fantastic way to start the day is with a visit to Thermae Bath Spa. Experience Britain’s only natural thermal water just as the Celts and Romans did 2,000 years ago. This sparkling oasis in the centre of Bath is also known for its thermal treatments and roof-top pool where you can enjoy views of the surrounding cityscape. And if all that soaking leaves you hungry, head to The Spa’s cafe where you can enjoy a lunch or snack. Bath is a cultural hub; you’ll find a museum, gallery or attraction at every turn here. Attractions such as The Museum of Bath Architecture, No. 1 Royal Crescent and the Jane Austen Centre tell Bath’s story, but you’ll also find hidden gems such as the Museum of East Asian Art and Beckford’s Tower. Galleries such as the Holburne Museum and Victoria Art Gallery are a must for art lovers. • 5. The UK's only natural thermal spa is a winning combination of old and new right in the heart of the city, its Georgian buildings blending with the striking contemporary design of the glass-encased New Royal Bath. Echoing how the nearby Roman Baths were very much a social hub for all-comers, Thermae Bath Spa is not an exclusive, hushed set-up. Rather, it's a social place to come with a loved one or group of friends, to lounge around, chat or simply relax. 5 SPA& WELLBEING Bath is a prime destination for a restorative break. This has in fact been the case since time immemorial, thanks to the three springs beneath the city that produce over a million litres of hot, mineral-rich water each day. T he said waters have been attracting visitors to Bath ever since Prince Bladud, father of Shakespeare's King Lear, was cured of leprosy by bathing here in 863 AD. Well, that's according to legend. But it's a fact that Celts, Romans, Saxons, Normans and Georgians have all benefitted from and enjoyed Bath's health-giving and relaxing natural, thermal waters – just as you can today at the state- of-the-art Thermae Bath Spa, which will be celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2016. • 6. Sessions include access to two thermal pools. The large and curvaceous indoor Minerva Bath, set around mushroom- like columns, has massage jets and a 'lazy river', while the open-air rooftop pool basks in fantastic views across the city. You can also choose from a number of treatments including massages and water therapies. The pools stay open until 9pm, and the outdoor pool is particularly special after dark, whether on a balmy summer's evening or chilly winter's night. Spa treats in Bath aren't limited to Thermae Bath Spa. The Gainsborough Bath Spa, a five- star hotel occupying imposing Georgian buildings just across the street from Thermae, opened in 2015, and is the only place to stay in Britain with direct access to natural thermal waters. Along with treatment rooms, saunas and steam rooms, the Gainsborough’s Spa Village has a colonnaded Romanesque Bath House with three thermal pools set under a glass atrium, and in several of the hotel’s bedrooms you can even fill your bathtub with the thermal waters. 6 You can also be pampered in the spas of The Royal Crescent Hotel, Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel and Bath Priory Hotel, and, in Bath's environs, the country-house hotels of Bowood Hotel, Homewood Park, Lucknam Park and Woolley Grange all have luxury spas too. At all of these spas, sessions and treatments are on offer to non-residents as well as hotel guests. Every Saturday, the superb farmers’ market brings the freshest local produce, as well as an array of friendly traders selling handicrafts. 20 SHOPPING When it comes to retail therapy, Bath really does offer it all. What makes shopping in our compact city centre so distinctive is that as well as the expected high-street brands, we have an amazing number of independent stores, selling items you won’t find anywhere else. We also offer the ultimate antidote to bland, mall-centric shopping: here in Bath, most of our shops are spread around elegant Georgian streets, and are integral to the fabric of the city. It has Bath Aqua Glass, to Harvest Natural Foods where you can stock up on your wholesome favourites and Avenida for home decoration.

  • 26. O ver centuries past, Bath and beyond has developed a wonderful reputation for the quality of its food and drink. And now, with three Michelin-starred restaurants, a wealth of home-grown (and still growing) culinary talent, superb local ales and ciders, plus many small but amazing independent businesses and a food festival, this little city is ‘big’ on all the things that matter. Here’s a real flavour of where to go, what to expect – and enjoy! Tale of two buns You’ll perhaps have heard mention of Bath’s famous bun, but did you know we have two? Sally Lunn’s Bun is round brioche in style, and the secret recipe is passed on only with deeds of Sally Lunn’s House. The fruited Bath Bun, available at the Bath Bun Tea Shoppe and a number of locations around the city is closely linked to a Dr William Oliver (of Bath Oliver biscuit fame). Time to put history to the taste test! Elegant and charming cafés, great gastro pubs, cool bars and the very best in fine dining – Bath and its surrounding areas will surprise and delight you with the diversity of its offering and, of course, its historic and scenic settings. 6 26 Gastropubs Those seeking a gastronomic pub treat will not be disappointed by the likes of The Chequers on River St., Bath Brew House on James St. West and The King William on London Rd. On the south side of the city, Graze Brewery & Chophouse on Brunel Sq. deserves a mention. Modern British menus are in plentiful supply and so is the traditional Sunday roast. You'll be equally spoilt for choice if you want to experience our finest real ales and wonderful local ciders. Some of the best are at The Raven on Queen St., Crystal Palace on Abbey Green or The Salamander on John St. If you’re vegetarian, you’ll love the extraordinary Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen. Time for tea In Bath, we have a number of elegant and quirky places to enjoy a tea or coffee stop. Experience the ultimate in Georgian refinement in the famous Pump Room. If vintage style appeals, try Bea’s on Saville Row, where tea is served by red lipstick-clad waitresses. For coffee with a heavenly slice of cake, head to Courtyard Café on North Parade Passage. The Metropolitan Café on New Bond St. excels in sweet treats. Real coffee lovers will find Rosario’s Café on Northumberland Place a perfect haven. Food is essentially, though not slavishly, British in character and takes advantage of locally sourced produce wherever possible. Their food reputation is matched by their service - always attentive without being intrusive. They have an extensive wine list and selection of local ales & ciders - and they can mix a mean cocktail too. Outside they boast what is arguably Bath's best pub garden; a walled courtyard sun trap, perfect for summertime lunching and drinking. • 42. Dating from 1829, Royal Victoria Park is Bath's main green lung. Its 57 acres extends westwards from the scenic grassy swathe below The Royal Crescent to a superb children's playground and the secluded Botanical Gardens. Laid out for the Georgians in 1795, pretty Sydney Gardens is even older. In the 19th century, the Kennet and Avon Canal and Brunel's Great Western Railway were cleverly landscaped in to the setting. Bath's most central green spot is riverside Parade Gardens. With its deckchairs and regular concerts in the bandstand, the gardens provide a snapshot of a traditionally English scene. On the city's southern slopes lies Prior Park Landscape Garden. Designed in the 18th century by the poet Alexander Pope and famous landscape architect Capability Brown, the grounds descend to a Palladian bridge and lakes. 42 GREAT OUTDOORS Historic parks & gardens Bath is blessed with lovely parks, glorious countryside on its fringes, and a beautiful canal and river.
