Welcome to Bath Folk Festival 2015. We are very excited to present this year's
programme of events, which we hope will provide something for everyone - wherever
you sit on the folk spectrum.
Highlights include a rare live performance by Flook, a free open air ceilidh, music
from international guests Fabula Rasa and Himmerland, and a special art exhibition
and concert series at the 44AD artspace exploring folklore, custom and tradition.
This year sees our Traditional Music Summer School go from strength to strength
thanks to support from the University of Bath. You can enrol on the door to take
advantage of a week of intensive tuition, workshops and sessions designed to help
you develop your own traditional music skills. We will also be hearing from the
amazingly talented Bath Folk Youth Band, formed of regular summer school students.
We are proud to build on our partnerships with lots of local organisations again this
year, including Bath City Farm, Art at the Heart of the RUH, the ICIA at the University of
Bath, Bath Artisan Market, the Museum of Bath at Work, the Rec House, and of course
our many fantastic local venues. We would like to thank them, and our wonderful
sponsors, for all of their support creating this year's festival.

English Music
with Chris Timson
Chris is a distinguished concertina player
and a local authority on English folk music.
Chris will be sharing a variety of tunes and
techniques during this interactive
workshop.
Welsh Music
with Deuair
Deuair is Welsh folk duo Elsa Davies
and Ceri Owen-Jones. Their intent is to
try to bring to life a lost sound world of
Welsh traditional music for people
today.
In this workshop they will be exploring a
range of traditional Welsh tunes.
Swedish & Finnish Music
with Gabi Maas
Gabi plays violin, viola and Swedish
nyckelharpa. Based in Glasgow, she plays
with groups including the Ulster Orchestra,
Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the
Sinopia Quartet, and continues to perform
and teach Scandinavian and Irish traditional
music. In this workshop, Gabi will guide you
through the intricacies of Swedish and
Finnish music.
Klezmer Music
with Tim Hemming
Tim is an experienced teacher and
performer, specialising in klezmer
clarinet, gypsy guitar and slap double
bass. In this workshop he will
introduce klezmer music and teach a
range of tunes and techniques.
Hungarian Music with Fabula Rasa
The music of Fabula Rasa is inspired by
Hungarian folklore and a variety of genres.
In this workshop, Fabula Rasa introduce
Hungarian folk music, including their
favourite tunes.
All workshops at the The Edge, University of Bath, 2-5pm cost £20 each and

The Bath Folk Youth Band
A new, top-class youth folk ensemble in Bath, drawing on the enthusiasm and
talents of students from our annual Traditional Music Summer School.
Friday 14th August 6pm,
The Edge, University of Bath
The Bath Folk Youth Band formally launched at Bath Folk Festival 2014 with a week of workshops
and performances, including a collaboration with the amazing Ards CCE. The group promotes the
traditional music of the British Isles and encourages students to develop their own arrangements
and style within the folk canon.
Most Bath Folk Youth Band members are Grade 5-8 standard. They have not all taken the
traditional route of music exams but they can all learn tunes by ear. We are keen to welcome new
members and hold monthly workshops for students from Grades 1-4 to help them develop the
skills necessary to join the band.
There will be a special festival performance by the youth band
at the University of Bath on Friday 14th August, entry £6.

The Museum of Bath at Work holds large
historic collections of film, photographs,
documents, sound recordings and objects
relating to the commercial development of
the city.
As part of the Bath Folk Festival, there will be
a special performance at the museum.
Working Songs of Britain is a tribute to
the role that song has played in industry,
telling the tales of the lives, celebrations,
toils and struggles of the working people.

The flutes of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen, the
guitar of local boy Ed Boyd and the bodhran of John
Joe Kelly weave and spin traditionally rooted tunes
into the breathtaking sound of the groundbreaking
band Flook. This group possesses a rare blend of
fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction
and a bold, adventurous musical imagination.
DisKan are a group of truly dazzling individual talents,
playing a variety of instruments from flutes, fiddles
and whistles to bouzoukis, guitars and double bass.

audiences in the UK, and quickly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned
with in the folk world.

The music of Fabula Rasa is
inspired by Hungarian folklore
and a variety of genres, including
classical music from Gesualdo to
Bartók, jazz, pop and beats.
The band does not cover original
folklore songs – they make their
own music. Fabula Rasa believe
that music makes everyone
stronger: it can heal and it can
more easily deliver messages to
the heart and to the soul.
Himmerland is a Danish group of five travelling
musicians, each carrying very different life stories and
traditions in their rucksacks.
They compose their own music and infuse it with all
the different traditions that run in their blood. They
represent a Denmark where people from around the
world can meet, live together and all contribute to a
sweetly simmering cultural melting pot.

The Izzy Burns Quartet is quickly
establishing itself as a vital part of the
North East’s burgeoning Americana
scene. Whether you enjoy traditional
ballads and fiddle tunes, Appalachian
old-time, bluegrass, or contemporary alt-
country, you will enjoy the Izzy Burns
Quartet!
Kadia’s sound is contemporary melodic
foot-stomping folk. Influenced by the
likes of The Lumineers, Damien Rice,
Vivien Long, Tommy Emmanuel, Ben
Howard and Hudson Taylor, Kadia were
highly commended finalists in the Bath
Folk Festival New Shoots Competition
2014.
MUHA offers a new tradition in
contemporary Eastern European music,
influenced by the multicultural society in
the UK. Combining the melodic beauty of
Eastern European folklore, North Indian
Kathak rhythms, Cuban beats and original
lyrics they mesmerise with a musical feast
rooted in the Slavonic tradition but
cultured from the world.
Claire Watts is a renowned singer/
songwriter, flautist and tin whistle player,
and an expert tutor at the Bath Folk
Festival Traditional Music Summer
School. She will be performing traditional
and original material with an Irish flavour.
Featured Artists
Exhibiting artists Sheena Vallely and
Vivienne Baker talk about their work as
both musicians and artists, and perform
together on the Two String Stage as part
of the 44AD exhibition Folklore: Custom
and Tradition.
Firmly rooted within the Irish tradition,

Mike Scott is most often found on the folk
club scene in the west of England. With
songs to amuse or disturb, you will not
find many answers, but they may pose a
few pertinent questions...
High energy, foot stomping, acoustic
music merging sounds from around the
globe, with influences ranging from
gypsy jazz and blues to Mediterranean
folk and hip hop.

Deuair is Welsh folk duo Elsa Davies and
Ceri Owen-Jones: fiddle, harp and two
voices. Their intent is to play and interpret
rare historical material from their own
research and, in their own way, try to bring
to life a lost sound world of Welsh
traditional music for people today.
A tribute to the role that song has played
in industry, telling tales of the lives
celebrations toils and struggles of the
working people.
Damir Yakubov is a singer, songwriter
and guitarist whose songs celebrate a lost
and forgotten culture. Damir’s
imagination takes us into a kind of trance
leading down historical paths of warrior
horseman poised to protect their people
but instead of carrying spears they are
carrying musical instruments in peace.
A singer composer and songwriter with an
illustrious career behind him, Cliff
McAuley has a love of singing Scottish
Ballads and will be performing some of
those and his own songs.
Steve Turner is known as a pioneer of
highly sophisticated English concertina
song accompaniments, stretching the
boundaries of traditional forms, with one
of the best voices in the business. He is a
multi-instrumentalist, who also
accompanies himself on the cittern, and
also plays mandolin and banjo.
With support from Bath and North East
Somerset Council, local celtic band Inu
will host a free interactive workshop for
children, including live music, storytelling
and mask making.
A compelling collaboration of story
telling and music from master story teller
Richard Selby and majestic musician
Bethany Porter.
Previously, Richard and Beth have
produced The Mouth Of The Night and
last years The Darkest Hours, The
Deepest Seas at Bath Folk Festival so
expect new work from this duo.

sounds, guitars and the Irish Bouzouki to
blend modern songwriting and folk
tunes/storytelling.
Exhibiting artists David Moss and Louise
Baxter talk about their work as both
musicians and artists and perform
together on the Two String Stage as part
of the 44AD exhibition Folklore: Custom
and Tradition.
Aughisky is not just any ol’ six-piece band
playing flying Irish and Scottish reels.
What sets Aughisky apart is the versatile
rhythm section which not only plays
different genres and groove styles but
also improvises throughout. The result is
an underlying harmonic landscape of
traditional tunes set in a diverse and
groovy context.
When Alan Doyle was let out of Dublin
the rest of the world didn't know what it
was in for! Now in Bristol he's assembled
a crew intent bringing the Craic to
anywhere they can with Dublin drinking
songs and maybe the odd rock classic
thrown in for good measure.
St James’ Wine Vaults presents three of
the best singer-songwriters on the Bath/
Bristol acoustic scene in an evening of
music just perfect for summer.
Featuring widely acclaimed guitarist
Hilary Pavey, local legend Jim Reynolds
and recent arrival Jon Asprey.
Louis is the talented guitarist from the
Bath Folk Youth Band. First taught to play
by his father Duncan, an equally talented
musican. The two share a bond in their
music that is immediately obvious.
Hailing from Sligo in Ireland’s north west,
Ray Coen has over 18 years experience as
a guitarist and enchants audience with his
delicate finger work.
Coming from an Irish family and a real
raconteur, Wes is steeped in singing
tradition and always excited about sharing
his culture. There’ll be plenty of
passionate classic songs and some from
off the track too.

Ranagri fuse worldwide folk music with
quality contemporary songwriting,
enhanced by virtuosic instrumentals,
vibrant rhythms and haunting melodies,
all interlaced with vivid storytelling.
Bath Folk Festival hosts an afternoon of
live music at Larkhall Inn, featuring Lawrie
Duckworth, The Pussy Rustlers,
Raintown Seers and more.
Lawrie Duckworth’s songs have a great
balance of heartfelt beauty and bleak
humour. If Bill Hicks wrote songs then
maybe they might sound like this.
Pussy Rustlers are a fun-time four piece
hillbilly band from the way-out West
Country playing stomping bluegrass
tunes and mountain jazz that folks just
can’t help dancing to.
Raintown Seers a trio from the North
West of England bringing a unique blend
of acoustic music that has roots in the folk
traditions of both sides of the Atlantic.
The Unrelated Family and very special
guests present an hour or so of the
funniest numbers in the folk songbook,
from Jake Thackray, Rambling Syd
Rumpo to Bill Bailey, Victoria Wood, Neil
Innes and many more.
Combining powerful, yet sensitive singing
and incredibly intricate yet beautifully
contrasting guitar styles, Two Oak Sons
present every song as a masterpiece of
emotionally stirring beauty.
Coming from predominantly rock,
classical and jazz backgrounds, Effra
began to write and develop music that
shared common ground.
In 2012 after only a year since their first
meeting, Effra won the Bath Folk Festival
‘New Shoots Competition’ on the
strength of their compositions and high-
energy performance.

Royal United Hospital Atrium
With support from Bath and North East Somerset Council, we are partnering
with Art at the Heart at Bath’s Royal United Hospital to bring live music to
visitors and patients at the hospital
From Monday 10th – Friday 14th August, guest artists will perform in the
public RUH Atrium cafe from 1pm - 1.40pm each day, before taking a tour
around selected hospital wards.

This year, 44AD’s eighthwonder exhibition gets musical
with the new Two-String Stage which will host a fantastic
series of concerts; featuring performances alongside
artwork, from talented musicians who combine their
practice with the visual arts.
The theme for this year’s exhibition is Folklore: custom
and tradition, and on display will be a fantastic variety of
paint, print, photography and 3d artworks.

Instrumental folk on fiddle and clarinet, with English and
European influences.
Tuesday 11th - Steve Turner
Pioneer of highly sophisticated English concertina song
accompaniments.

Beautiful Welsh music on harp and fiddle.
Thursday 13th - The Towpath Choir
Sea shanty singing group from the legendary Tuesday
sessions at the Cross Guns in Avoncliff.
Monday 10th - Lampa
Contemporary Irish trad band who mix new genres and
themes to create a eclectic upbeat blend of music and song.

New Shoots Competition
Now entering its fourth year, the New Shoots Competition aims to seek out
and nurture the very best new talent emerging within the
South West folk scene
To do this we are giving fresh, unsigned folk acts the
chance to compete for our top prize: a day of recording at
Peter Gabriel’s legendary Real World Studios in Wiltshire.
Heats will be held at The Nest on:
Sunday 9th August - 4pm
Monday 10th August - 7.30pm
Wednesday 12th August - 7.30pm
A grand final will take place at The Nest on Sunday 16th August at 4pm where the
winner of the Bath Folk Festival New Shoots Competition 2014, Simon Allen will
perform the closing set.

A packed afternoon of free live music with a party atmosphere
overlooking the beautiful World Heritage City of Bath.
Featuring live music, games, sessions, stalls and free workshops
including Rapper sword dancing and Capoeira.
Solana
Hailing from all corners of Europe, their sound encompasses
folk, swing, klezmer, ﬂamenco, latin, reggae and trip-hop.
Confirmed acts include:
Raintown Seers
Hailing from the North of England with a unique
blend of acoustic music that has roots in the folk
traditions of both sides of the Atlantic.
Mac Seka
Seka is a singer song writer from Dakar, Senegal. His unique
and original style make him one of the best ﬁngerpicking
guitar players of his generation.
Cliff McAulay
A singer composer and songwriter with an illustrious career
behind him. He has a love of singing Scottish Ballads and
will be performing some of those and his own songs.
Hoolihan
Hoolihan is a new young band formed from the
vibrant Irish session scene in Bath, many of
whom have been regulars in the Bath Folk
Festival Traditional music summer school.
