INTRODUCTION
• BASKETBALL, game played generally indoors by two opposing teams
of five players each . Basketball was conceived in 1891 by Dr. James
Naismith, a physical education instructor at theYMCA collage in
Springfield , Mass , as a way to condition outdoor athletes during the
winter months ,His original list of 13 rules has undergone a century of
revision , basketball is one of the most popular American sports and
one the rest of the world has adopted.

THE FIRST GAME
• The first official game was played on January 20,1892.
• It was played inYMCA gymnasium.
• It was played with nine players.
• The game ended at 1-0;
• The shot was made from 25 feet.
THE CREATOR
The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith.
It was Created on December 21,1891.
Naismith developed the first official 13 rules of the game.
TERMS TO KNOW
ASSIST : A pass thrown to a player who immediately scores.
BANK SHOT : A shot that hits the backboard before hitting the rim or going through
the net.
BLOCK OUT : To make contact with an opposing player to establish rebounding
position between the player and the ball. Also called “box out.”
TRAVELING : A violation that occurs when the player with the ball takes two many
steps without dribbling. This is a common occurrence with young players.
FOUL : A violation of the rules.
FREE THROW : An uncontested shot taken from the free throwline as a result of a
foul. Also called a foul shot. A made free throw is worth 1point.
DOUBLE THROW : A violation in which a player picks up their dribble and starts to
dribble again
RULES
 The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands , but never with the fist.
 A player cannot run with the ball . The player must throw it from the spot on which he
catches it , allowance to be made for a man running at good speed.
 The ball must be held by the hands . The arms or body must not be used for holding it.
NO shouldering , holding , pushing , striking , or tripping in any way of an opponent.
A foul is striking at the ball with the fist.
If either side make three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents.
A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds in to the basket
and stays there.
The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play.
The time shall be two fifteen minutes halves , with five minutes rest between.

Basketball requires your feet legs arms and eyes all work together to win the game . Coordination is a skill that people often struggle with by
playing basketball. We are able to practice our coordination skills and learn to improve them.
DISADVANTAGES
• Basketball can be healthy activity, on that increases stamina , strength , co-ordination while also promoting teamwork . Like any sport however , basketball has
its disadvantages too.
 SLAMMING AND JAMMING
Injuries generated from sudden force are known as traumatic injuries , and may include jamming a finger against a basketball or pulling or tearing a muscle.
SPRAIN PAIN
Running , jumping , dodging and ducking—basketball require plenty of sudden movements . Spraining an ankle is most common injury.
HEIGHT HINDRANCE
There’s no denying that basketball favors tall players over short players . According to Forbes , the median height in the NBA is 6 foot 7 inches , and even
those players are at a disadvantage to players that are 7 feet tall
