Basic Knot Tying
PARTS OF A ROPE
End
Bight
Loop
KINDS OF ROPE WORK
• KNOTS - used for various purposes, such as
stopper, rescue and even for connecting ropes
• BENDS – for connecting ropes of various sizes
• HITCHES – tying ropes to logs, posts, trunks or
other ropes & also for lashing purposes
• WHIPPINGS – to stop fraying of the end of ropes
• SPLICES – tying or weaving back the strands of a
rope
• LASHINGS – to join spars or poles together
KNOTS & THEIR USES
• A good knot holds but is easy to open if necessary
• There are different knots for different purposes and all knots are not
good for all purposes
• Practice makes perfect
• A good knot needs not to be complicated, use the simplest one good
enough for the job
• There is a difference in situations where there is constant pull on the
rope or if it is sometimes loose and sometimes taut
• Sometimes it is important to be able to open the knot, even if there is
a heavy load on the line
• Learn the difference of the wrong way to do it and the right way to do
it, especially how the wrong way to do it causes the knot to slip or
makes it difficult to open
• Can be tied quickly and easily.
• Firm, dependable and capable of doing what it’s supposed to do. Can
be easily untied
IT’S KNOT A PROBLEM
OVERHAND KNOT
The overhand knot is a foundation knot
(forming the basis of other knots) and is
probably the easiest and first knot most
people learn to tie
Category
- Stopper knot
Typical Use
- Climbing, Fishing, Shoelace and making other knots
PROCEDUCE
Form a loop and insert one end of the rope into the loop.
Then tighten up the knot
OVERHAND KNOT
Figure of Eight
Often used in such places as the end
of a string when tying a package
with slipknot or at the end of the
rope forming a lariat loop
Category
-Stopper knot
USES
To stop rope from frying
To wrap packages or bundles
Replaces the common overhand knot in many uses
PROCEDUCE
Make a loop with an end
Pass the end through it
Pull both sides to adjust the knot
Figure of Eight
Square Knot
Category
-Binding, Bend
USES
To close the knot in lashing when making gadgets
Tie shoe string, gifts, ribbons, bolts, etc
Bind packages, firewood, etc. together
To close triangular bandage in first aid
PROCEDUCE
Hold each end of the knots with both hands
Form an overhand knot or a loop by placing the right end over the left – the
right end entering from the outer part of the knot going towards the person
Form a bight, this time, left over right
A square knot or Reef Knot, is an ancient and
simple binding knot used to secure a rope or
line around an object
Square Knot
Sheet Bend
Sheet bend is practical for joining lines of
different diameter or rigidity. It is quick and
easy to tie, and is considered so essential.
Category
-Bend
USES
To join two rope ends, especially when they are not same size
PROCEDUCE
Make a bight in the thicker rope. Bring up the short end of the thinner
rope up through this bight.
Pass the thinner rope under the bight crossing the short and first, then
behind the bight and up and over the standing part, across the front of the
bight and under its own standing part. Tighten by pulling on the standing
part.
Sheet Bend
Clove Hitch
Clove hitch is one of the most widely used knot. It is
also considered one of the most important knot. It
most effectively used as a crossing knot.
Category
-Hitch
USES
To start lashing when making gadgets.
Tie the clothesline.
Attach a rope to a tree, pole hands or fingers.
Bind objects together.
Tie rope on objects – the rope to be used for mountain climbing, to secure
against a tree in rescuing a drowning person.
PROCEDUCE A
Wrap the end halfway around the pole
Cross the running end over the part in front
Wrap the end of the rope aver the pole again
Slip the end under the piece you just wrapped around the pole
Tighten the knot to finish it
PROCEDUCE B
Make 2 loops in the line
Slide the right loop over the left loop
Insert the object between the loops
Tighten the ends of the rope to complete the knot

Two Half Hitches
Two half-hitches is a type of knot, specially a
binding knot or hitch knot. This is reliable and
useful knot for attaching to a pole
Category
-Hitch
USES
To tie the clothesline
To tie a rope to a tree or pole
PROCEDUCE
Loop rope over a post
Make a clove hitch around the standing part of the rope
Two Half Hitches
Timber Hitch
Timber hitch is an important hitch, specially for
dragging heavy object like a log. It is used to attach
a single length of rope to a cylindrical object
Category
-Hitch
USES
To tie a rope to a log or pole that needs to be pulled.
To start diagonal lashing
PROCEDUCE
Make a half hitch.
Entangle the working part of the rope with half hitch.
Timber Hitch
Bowline Knot
Bowline knot referred as a king of knots because
of its importance. It will never slip or jam if
properly made and, thus, is excellent in tying
around a person in a rescue.
Category
Loop
USES
Making a fixed loop in the end of the line
To save a drowning person
To tie animals
PROCEDUCE
Start by forming an overhand loop on the standing part which is large
enough for its purposes.
Take a free end up through the eye, around the standing part, and right
back where it came from
Bowline Knot
Bowline Knot
Fisherman’s Knot
The fisherman’s knot is a bend with symmetrical
structure consisting of two overhand knots, each
tied around the standing part of the other
Category
Bend
USES
Joining thin, stiff or slippery lines
PROCEDUCE
Take one of two ends of the line you wish to tie a loose overhand knot into
the end
Take the second end of your two lines you wish to join and feed it back
through the overhand knot you just made
Take the line you just fed through the overhand knot and feed it behind
the first line
Turn into overhand knot
Pull the overhand knots tight and pull both ends of rope, the knots should
slide together meeting in the middle.
