RWANDA: With more than 11 years experience in facilitating trainings and
workshops related to peacebuilding, I have been training communities in different
provinces of Rwanda in conflict resolution, conflict transformation and counselling.
As short term consultant at different institutions including the Office of
Ombudsman-Rwanda, Lutheran World Federation- Rwanda, Africa Evangelical
Enterprise – Rwamagana Branch, World relief Rwanda, etc, I have facilitated
trainings and workshops on building peace, mediation, networking, community
organizing , organisational governance, monitoring local peace initiative ,
Nonviolent Communication, etc. In March 2007 – March 2008, he was
coordinating the grassroots project activities implemented by Labenevolencija in
Eastern province of Rwanda. As committed Rwandan Peacebuilder and through
Shalom Educating for Peace, a peace education organization he co-found in 2006, I
have been making efforts to build and sustaining positive peace through peace
and nonviolent education. He is ambitious to offer to the world the best he can
and then contribute to building a just, inclusive and peaceful world.

Professional experience:
From May 2013 to March 2017: Trainer at El_Ezer Counselling Ministry. Through this Initiative, I had participated as
facilitator in different seminars on Counseling and Child Development in different provinces of Rwanda. After
the 1994 Genocide up to date, Rwandans has had to cope with Trauma. The initiative had the aim of
Equipping communities with skilled community counsellors who can help people needing psychosocial aid.

From March 2007 to March 2008: Coordinator, Grassroots Project- Eastern Province at Labenevolencija. As part-time
consultant, I coordinated Labenevolencija Rwanda’s activities in the Eastern Province. His principal
responsibility was to train local leaders in Mass violence prevention, trauma healing and reconciliation and
organising debates in secondary schools. The work was based in Fumbwe sector, Rwamagana district. The
project was funded by SIDA( Swidish international Development Agency).
From March 2008 – up to date: Co-founder and Executive Director at Shalom Educating for Peace (SEP) and, from
2013, Legal Representative of SEP-Rwanda. The organization has the aim of building and sustaining positive
peace through education. SEP SEP pursues the following strategic objectives: (i) educating for peace, (ii)
researching for peace and (iii) cultivating the culture of non-violence. The organisation is located at Located
at the interface between academicians and practitioners, SEP considers peace as a way of life committed to
nonviolent means of resolving and transforming daily conflicts and striving for personal and social justice.
Walking alongside communities, SEP applies a holistic approach: the organization seeks to work with the
whole community, on every level, bringing peace to young people, educators, parents, leaders and other
community groups in a variety of ways.

From 2014- Up to date: Local correspondent for Rwanda of “Insight on Conflict” at Peace Direct, London,
UK. the primary area of my work as the Local Correspondent is on investigating and supplying information
on local peacebuilders. In addition, I occasionally submit posts to the Insight on Conflict blog. The blogs have
provided a place for more personal reflections on peacebuilding work done different actors in the country.

Training Facilitator, ‘Resolving Conflict and building sustainable lasting peace’, Office of Ombudsman. (2006): I
facilitated a workshop organised by the Office of Ombudsman/Rwanda for its agents. During the workshop,
the agents of this national high institution in charge of fighting against injustices and corruption were
brought around meditating on their role as peacebuilders.
I served as Member of Experts team selected by the IHRN(International Human Rights Network) to conduct the Mid-
term Evaluation of Rwanda Justice, Reconciliation, Law and Order Sector’s Strategy and Formulation of a
New Strategy for the Period 2013-2018, as a service to the European Union Delegation in Rwanda. The
assignment took place during the period of November 2011 – January 2012.
Research experience
- From 2000 to 2002, I was member of OSSREA (Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern
and Southern Africa)- Rwanda Chapter. Through the Organization, I participated in a research on
Poverty Reduction Policies: Relevance Test. This research, ordered by the Ministry of Finance and
Economic Planning, was carried out in all provinces of Rwanda.

o From July 2005 to November 2006, I was carrying out a Research Article to be presented in partial
fulfilment of the requirements of the Master’s Degree in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies at the
University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa.The research article is entitled: “The Contribution
of the Office of the Ombudsman to Peacebuilding Efforts in Rwanda” .
o From February 2012 to November 2014, I was conducting a doctoral research under the title of
“Anti-corruption education as a way of building positive peace in Rwanda.” The study has the overall
objective to develop anti-corruption education as away to building positive peace in Rwanda. It
pursues the following specific objectives:(i) to understand the types, forms, extent, causes and
consequences of corruption in developing countries and to demonstrate its connections with
peacebuilding efforts;(ii)to review the various methods of combating corruption , with particular
respect to Rwanda, and their effectiveness; (iii) to examine the potential central role of education in
fighting against corruption;(iv)to design an anti-corruption curriculum for Rwandan primary school-
children and implement it in some schools in Rwanda and (v)to undertake a preliminary evaluation
of its impacts.
Award
I am one of the three of recipients of IPPI( International Public Policy Institute) Global Peacemaking Award
2012. The Award will be presented in June 2012 at University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.

participants during the summit, Basabose got opportunity to learn about indigenous people in Central and

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Participants from Burundi, D.R.Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, the
USA, Kenya, and Sudan met and discussed various issues related to the processu of building sustainable
reconciliation in our region.
October 2010: Astana, Kazakstan. Basabose participated in the World Forum of Spiritual Culture. He
presented a paper on The role of spiritual culture in building a resilient human society, with Rwanda as a case
study.
January 2011: Kampala, Uganda. Basabose participated in Great Lakes Leadership Institute(GLI) organized by
the Center for Reconciliation at Duke Divinity School, in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee
(MCC), World Vision International (WVI), and African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM). The
GLI held from January 16-22, 2011, at Ggaba National Seminary in Kampala, Uganda. Throughout the week,
participants from the Great Lakes region worked together on a theology and methodologies of reconciliation
that comes from both the cries and hopes of the entire region and our individual communities.
-February 2011: Johannesburg, South Africa. I participated in Africa Regional Consultation organized by
Institute for Justice and Reconciliation on The International Criminal Court and Community-Level
Reconciliation: In-Country Perspectives.
-October 2011: Cape Town, South Africa. I participated in the 5th
Summit of the Global Alliance for Ministries
and Infrastructure of Peace. During the summit, I presented a paper.
-January 2012: Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. I participate in International Conference on Corruption in
Africa. I presented a paper on “ Combating corruption through education”.
-February 2014: Kigali, Rwanda. Through Shalom Educating for Peace, I organised and coordinated an
African Summit under the theme of “Promoting peace education within our communities”.
-July 2014: Vermont, USA. I participate in a conference on Restorative Justice, Responsive regulation and
Complex problems. I presented a paper on “ the linkage between Anti-corruption Efforts, promoting human
rights and building a promising restorative justice system: the case of Ubupfura project.
October- November 2015: Canada. I had a speaking tour that brought me to Ottawa and Toronto, Canada:
The speaking tour was focusing on” The responsibility to reconcile violent conflict”. Through this tour, I
reached out two university communities (St-Paul University in Ottawa and the University of Toronto). The
speaking events at the universities were organised in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Conflict
resolution (based at St-Paul University) and Science for Peace (a university based centre at the University of
Toronto).
December 2015: Ethiopia. I participated in the International Pan-African Policy and Capacity Development
Workshop on National and Regional Reconciliation co-organised by the Institute for Justice and
Reconciliation and Oxfam International Liaison Office to the African Union. During the workshop, I was given
opportunity to share about the Forums for Reconciliation in Rwanda.
Experience in designing community training materials:
I produced the following educational materials:
1. “Twubake Amahoro Iwacu”, a fifty lessons curriculum designed for children monitors.
2. Dutoze abana indangagaciro za Gikristo- A curriculum designed for local organization called CARSA
and aimed at educating our children for peace values.

3. Dutoze abaharanira amahoro- A curriculum designed for the facilitators of Peace club in Rwandan
secondary school. It was produced by CARSA in 2015.
4. Nibakurane Ubupfura/ Let them grow up with Ubupfura. The curriculum comprises three modules
and was designed for children with the objective of educating them and equip them with wisdom
and skills to resist corruption as a way of sustaining positive peace in Rwanda. The education
materials were developed, tested and evaluated in the framework of my doctoral research
conducted from 2011 to 2014.
5. In 2007, I co-wrote a facilitation guide and training manual for community counseling. The two
materials were produced by the Lutheran World Federation. Written in French, the materials are
respectively entitled” Guide du formateur en counseling communautaire” and “ Manual de
Counseling communautaire: Reflection sur quelques cas traumatiques.
