Future Goals
I worked for Jefferson County School District for 11 1/2 years. I am looking for employment in
an area where I feel that I can be a benefit to society.
I have been working with children from infants to high school students since my graduation
from Dordt College in 1975. I love working with teachers and children especially students in
high school who are from other countries, helping them feel comfortable and finding their
place in this new world called America. Alameda High School is in low income working class
neighborhood. The parents work hard to survive. The school is making tremendous strides. It
has 30% white students who speak English at home. That means that the 70% of the rest of the
1000 students are from all over the world and speak two and three languages. Many have
come to our school with no English skills and many have limited education in their home
country. Many of these students came to the library because it was a safe place especially at
lunch times. I made an extra effort to greet them and try to help them with their class work
and treat them like adults. These students often made my job very rewarding and as a
geography teacher, I knew where they came from and something about their country OR I
made the effort to ask them and find out. It was the most rewarding part of my position. I also
love history, politics and geography so teaching students and teachers about this world and
how to do research was the second most rewarding part of my past positions. I would like to
continue working with others to create a better world.
I was also an English, History, Political Science and Substitute teacher in my 20 year educator’s
career. My other areas of interest are the humanities: art history, world history, politics and
government, geography, archives and research. I can understand and read Spanish but my
speaking ability in Spanish is more limited (I have trouble with past and future verb tenses).
