Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar, India to a Hindu family. He was deeply influenced by stories of devotion and truth from his childhood. He went to London to study law and later used non-violent civil disobedience in South Africa to fight discrimination against Indians. Gandhi employed non-cooperation and satyagraha to lead India to independence from British rule through massive non-violent protests. He fasted, wrote prolifically, and traveled throughout India to mobilize people. Gandhi inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. He was assassinated in 1948 by Nathuram Godse due to his progressive views.
