Balochi is the language spoken in Balochistan province of Pakistan. There are two main dialects of Balochi - Sulemanki and Mekrani. Balochi was brought to the region by nomadic tribes from north-west Iran who rarely settled in one place for long, contributing to Balochi remaining primarily an oral language with little early development of poetry and prose. After Pakistan's partition, steps were taken to promote Balochi, including starting Balochi language radio broadcasts from Karachi and Quetta television, establishing literary associations, and the emergence of modern Balochi poets and writers working to advance the language.

2. Introduction to Balochi
Balochi is the language spoken in Balochistan, the largest province of
Pakistan. Other languages such as “Persian” and “Brohi” are also
spoken. There are two kinds of Balochi - “Sulemanki” and “Mekrani”. It
was brought by tribes in the north-west Iran. They were nomadic people
that rarely settled in any one place for long periods of time. This explains
why there has been little development in Balochi poetry and prose and
why the language has largely been an oral one.

The early Balochi poetry abounds in folk songs. Jam darang is
considered an important Balochi poet. The first time Balochi
language became known was in 1830 when W.Leech reported in the
journal of aistic society . Before partition the Balochi literature was
beginning to decline. There were few books and magazines written
and even its gazetteer was published in english.

8. Balochi
After partition there have been steps to promote the language:
● Radio Pakistan Karachi begans broadcasts in Balochi.
● The Balochi literary association was set up.
● The Quetta television station broadcasts in Balochi
● Modern Balochi literature has shown rapid progress. Some poets
include: Atta Shad & Ishaq Shamin. Writer are: Gul Khan Nazir and
Azad Jamal din are also working to promote it.
