 Non-renewable grant for 12 months
 Stipend
 $30,000 for master’s level research & doctoral
research (i.e.$2,500/month)
 $50,000 for post-doctoral research (i.e.
$4,166/month)
 Health insurance
 Logistic support of our office
 Join our alumni and our network

8. REQUIREMENTS
 An official invitation letter from a US university or research
center
 Belgian nationality
 Affiliated to a Belgian university
 Year in which you obtained your Bachelor’s degree or PhD

9. HOW TO FIND THE BEST HOST INSTITUTION?
 Use your network (professors,
friends,...)
 Search and contact authors who
are in the U.S. in your research
field
 Check out BAEF’s alumni on our
website
 Don’t hesitate to contact them....
you have nothing to lose! ;)

10. HOW TO
APPLY
Three
simultaneous
actions: start early!
Look for financial support (BAEF, Fulbright, Fernand
Lazard Foundation, FNRS, FWO , Wbi etc…)
Contact various US universities or research centers
RESEARCHERS
Choose the best one and ask for a letter of invitation for
a period of 12 months ( min 9 mnths)

 A brief autobiography in narrative prose (one
page)
 A carefully prepared statement of purpose
 Why do you want to conduct research in the US?
 What are your research plans?
 What benefits do you expect to gain from your
research stay in the US?
 3 recommendation letters (November 15th)

Early February Final decision about BAEF Fellowships
End of January BAEF in-person selection interview

Invitation letter from your chosen US university research unit &

14. TIPS AND TRICKS
 Timing is everything!
 Don't hesitate to seek advice to your
professors, the university international
relation office, your friends, BAEF’s
Alumni and office, ...)
 Letters of recommendation:
personalized, detailed and diverse.
Follow them up.
 Interviews: Learn how to pitch your
project simply and clearly (check
whether your university organizes mock
interviews).
