DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO
DO WITH MY LIFE:
HOW PARENTAL
INFLUENCE ON CAREER
CHOICE AND AUTONOMY
SUPPORT RELATE TO
STUDENT WELL-BEING
Key concepts
Parental autonomy support
Self-esteem
Self-worth
Subjective well-being
INTRODUCTION
Choosing the right career is
important
Other people may influence the
careers people choose to pursue
Another factor that can affect how
people choose a career is parental
autonomy support
Parents can impact their child’s well-
being
PREVIOUS RESEARCH
Do students’ perceptions of choosing their own
career path versus perceptions of parent-chosen
career path relate to:
 Self-esteem
 Self-worth
 Subjective well-being
Does perceived parental autonomy support
relate to:
 Self-esteem
 Self-worth
 Subjective well-being

 76 participants
 Ages ranged between 18 and 23 years-old
 56 female, 9 male, 9 non-binary, 2 did not indicate gender
 19 first-years, 14 second-years, 16 third-years, 21 fourth-years,
1 fifth year, 1 thesis student, 4 did not identify their year
 Participants were recruited via Facebook and the
school’s email
 Participants were given a link to the survey
 In order to take my survey, participants:
 Had to be at least 18 years old
 Had to be currently enrolled in college
 Had to have some idea of their intended career path
METHOD
 All measures were adapted to the same 6-point scale from
1 (strongly disagree) to 6 (strongly agree)
 Predictor variables:
 Perceived mother autonomy support
 Perceived father autonomy support
 Perception of a self-chosen career
 Perception of a mother-chosen career
 Perception of a father-chosen career
 Outcome variables:
 Self-esteem
 Self-worth
 Subjective well-being
