BA Glass is a Portuguese glass container company with a history dating back to 1912. Key events include adopting automatic bottle making technology between 1947-1965, developing a new manufacturing unit in Avintes in 1969, and acquiring other glass companies to expand operations internationally, including in Spain in 1998, Poland in 2012, and Greece, Bulgaria and Romania in 2017. Most recently, BA Glass invested €44 million to expand its Villafranca de los Barros, Spain plant, adding a new furnace and around 100 new jobs. BA Glass now has 7 factories across Europe and produces over 5 billion containers annually.

Constitution of the company
'Barbosa e Almeida' (bottling
company) by the partners Raúl da
Silva Barbosa and Domingos de
Almeida.

3. 1930
●
Start of industrial activity in
Campanhã (Porto) with Semi-
Automatic Technology. The name
'Fábrica de Vidros Barbosa e
Almeida, Lda.'

4. BETWEEN 1947 AND 1965
●
Introduction of Automatic
Technology: installation,
innovative in Portugal, of feeding
equipment and automatic molding
for bottle making.
●
Acquisition of the third automatic
machine increasing the weekly
production in about 350 thousand
bottles (a capacity 6 times higher
than that of 18 years before).

5. 1969
●
Start of development of the new
manufacturing unit in Avintes
(Vila Nova de Gaia), with two
regenerative furnaces (recover
heat) that were presented as
cutting-edge technology against
traditional methods of fusion of
raw materials.

6. 1971 AND 1975
●
In 1971, the first automatic
machine of type IS (Individual
Section) was installed, carrying
out a substantial increase in
installed capacity.

7. 1986
●
In 1986 José Augusto da Silva
Domingues acquires the stakes of
Sogrape (77%) and Vinícola do
Dão (3%), controlling about 80%
of the share capital.

8. 1993, 1995 AND 1998
●
In 1993 BA buys 94.5% of CIVE -
Companhia Industrial Vidriera, SA, a
company located in the city of Marinha
Grande, with three furnaces.

In 1995 Merger is operated by
incorporation of CIVE in BA.
●
In 1998 in 1998 the Constitution of the
Spanish company 'BA - Glass Containers
Factory Barbosa & Almeida, SA', (owned
by BA by 90.15% of the share capital),
and construction of a factory with a
furnace in Villafranca de los Barros
(Extremadura).

9. 2012
●
Acquisition of the Polish group
Warta Glass.
●
This acquisition allows the BA
Group a geographic expansion of its
market to Eastern Europe, which
represents a step forward in its
commitment to the Group's
internationalization.

The acquisition also allows the BA
Group to diversify its customer and
product portfolio, significantly
strengthening its position in the spirits
segment.

10. 2017
●
Acquisition of the Yioula Group,
composed of 4 factories in 3
countries: Greece (Athens),
Bulgaria (Sofia and Plovdiv) and
Romania (Bucharest). With these
new acquisitions, the BA Group
now produces more than 20
million units per day.

11. EXTENSION OF THE COMPANY IN VILLAFRANCA DE LOS
BARROS

The Portuguese glass container company
BA Glass will invest 44 million euros in
the expansion of its plant in Villafranca
de los Barros (Badajoz), specifically in a
new furnace and the creation of about
100 new jobs, and has moved the social
headquarters of this factory to the city.
●
The BA Glass group has numerous
plants in several European countries and
the Villafranca de los Barros is the
Greater , with a current staff of about 300
people that will now add another 100,
approximately.

12. ●In addition to the 44 million euros
that will be invested to open a new
furnace between the next months of
September and October, another 20
million will be allocated to renovate
the two already existing.
●Other initiatives that will be adopted
are the advancement of technology, in
energy efficiency and the recycling of
materials used in the production
process
●This investment initiative is part of
the firm's strategy to cover the
demand of the Iberian market and
other countries of the EU and North
Africa, and to be "the door" of these
products for some 50 countries.
●The BA Glass group invoices about
250 million euros a year in the two
factories in Extremadura.

13. PRODUCTION

BA has a variety of production
machines with characteristics suitable
for each type of packaging, in order
to meet the packaging needs of the
food industry and the beverage
industry in general.
●
With a total of 7 factories and about
2,200 employees, 1,550 in the 5
Iberian units and 650 in the 2 Polish
units, BA annually produces more
than 5 billion containers in 11 glass
colors.
