Azure Spot Virtual Machines offer deep discounts of up to 90% off standard on-demand pricing for unused Azure compute capacity. Spot VMs allow users to run workloads like batch processing jobs, rendering applications, and dev/test environments at significantly lower prices, but the VMs can be evicted if the current price rises above the maximum price bid set by the user. The cost savings are ideal for interruptible workloads that are not dependent on a specific VM remaining running at all times.

Organizations commonly believe that they are advancing in analytical capabilities due to the rise in the data science profession and the myriad of technologies available for analytics, business intelligence, artificial intelligence and machine learning. However, if you do the math, they are actually falling behind as the increases in the rates of data collection volume far outpace the rate of increases in hot and warm data used for analytics. Empowering the AWS DynamoDB™ application developer with Alternator
Getting started with AWS DynamoDB™ is famously easy, but as an application grows and evolves it often starts to struggle with DynamoDB’s limitations. We introduce Scylla’s Alternator, which provides the same API as DynamoDB but aims to empower the application developer. In this presentation we will survey some of Alternator’s developer-centered features: Alternator lets you test and eventually deploy your application anywhere, on any public cloud or private cluster. It efficiently supports multiple tables so it does not require difficult single-table design. Finally, Alternator provides the developer with strong observability tools. The insights provided by these tools can detect bottlenecks, improve performance and even lower its cost.

- how ScyllaDB optimizes for both
- performance isolation of different workloads within ScyllaDB
- how ScyllaDB supports concurrent OLTP and Analytics without sacrificing either latency or throughput

SQream DB - Bigger Data On GPUs: Approaches, Challenges, Successes
This talk will present SQream’s journey to building an analytics data warehouse powered by GPUs. SQream DB is an SQL data warehouse designed for larger than main-memory datasets (up to petabytes). It’s an on-disk database that combines novel ideas and algorithms to rapidly analyze trillions of rows with the help of high-throughput GPUs. We will explore some of SQream’s ideas and approaches to developing its analytics database – from simple prototype and tech demos, to a fully functional data warehouse product containing the most important features for enterprise deployment. We will also describe the challenges of working with exotic hardware like GPUs, and what choices had to be made in order to combine the CPU and GPU capabilities to achieve industry-leading performance – complete with real world use case comparisons.
As part of this discussion, we will also share some of the real issues that were discovered, and the engineering decisions that led to the creation of SQream DB’s high-speed columnar storage engine, designed specifically to take advantage of streaming architectures like GPUs.
