The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican civilization that flourished in central Mexico in the post-classic period from the 14th to 16th century CE. They built their capital city of Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco. The Aztecs developed a complex society with a strong warrior tradition and practiced human sacrifice as part of their religious rituals.
