3. MEANING
The word ‘alternative’ medicine means practices and
healing techniques that are not generally taught in
medical schools, thus alternating with prevailing view.
The technique that replaces the allopathic medical care.
The word ‘complementary’ gained popularity in the
field conveying the idea that the modalities or
techniques could be used to complement and enhance
the biomedical treatments.
4. DEFINITION OF COMPLEMENTARY &
ALTERNATIVE THERAPY
Alternative/Complementary modalities have been defined
as treatment techniques whose goals are to evoke healing,
taking into account the body-mind-spirit connection of
every individual. - (Dossey, 1995).
It is a group of diverse medical and health care system,
practices, therapies and procedures that are not presently
considered to be part of conventional medicine.

The alternative medicine system is an emphasis
on working with internal natural forces to achieve
a harmonic state of mind and body which can
promote a sense of well being and comfort.

9. 1.AYURVEDA
In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda consists of
the word ayus, meaning life and Veda
meaning science, which means science of
life.
Its focus is on the balance of mind, body
and spirit.
According to Ayurveda, everything is
composed of five elements: air, water, fire,
earth, space.
Ayurvedic treatment plan involves; Diet, Herbal
Medicine, Exercise, Massage.
10. SIDDHA
Siddha medicine was practiced in Southern India.
Principle of Siddha system of medicine: -
The universe consists of two essential entities: matter and
energy.
The Siddhas call the Siva (male) and Shakti (female, creation).
There are five elements (bhutas) which are present in every
substance, but in different proportions. Their names are Munn
(solid), neer (fluid), thee (radiance), Vayu (gas) and aakasam
(ether).

The physiological function in the body is mediated by three
substances (dravyas), which are made up of the five elements.
They are vatham, pitham and karpam.
Vatham is formed by aakasam(ether) and vayu(gas). Vatham
controls the nervous actions such as movement, sensation, etc.
Pitham controls the metabolic activity of the body, digestion,
assimilation and warmth, etc.
Karpam is formed by munn(solid) and neer(fluid) and controls
stability. When their equilibrium is upset, disease sets in.
13. UNANI
Unani system of medicine is originated in Greece by the Greek philosopher,
physician Hippocrates (460–377 B.C.)
Unani considers the human body to be made up of seven components: -
Arkan (elements), mizaj (temperaments) Aklath (humours), anza (organs), arawh
(spirits), Quo (faculties) and afal (functions)
Unani medicine believes in promotion of health, prevention of diseases and cure.

14. HOMEOPATHY
The Origin:- Homeopathy has been in practice for 170 years by thousand of
practitioners and there are over 100 .It is created in 1796 by Samuel .
Homeopathy is highly scientific ,logical ,safe ,quick ,and extremely effective
method of healing. It offers long lasting to permanent cure ,treating the disease
from its roots .
Homeopathy is the system of treatment based on some laws and principles ,which
are-
a) The law of Direction of cure
b) The Law of Single Remedy
c) The law of Minimum dose
d) The Law of Chronic Disease
Remedies used in homeopathy is usually derived from the naturally occurring
substances, such as plant extracts and minerals.
15. NATUROPATHY
Naturopathy uses body's natural healing abilities in prevention and treatment of
disease through a healthy lifestyle.
It builds immunity, improves mental health, and enhances body functions.
Naturopathy mainly focuses on finding the cause of the disease rather than
merely treating the symptoms of disease.
