More often than you might think Americans have looked beyond the two major political parties and reached for a third choice. When they do, big things often happen in American politics and in American life.
Let's start at the beginning. First, why two parties? In fact, why parties at all?

When the framers met in Philadelphia in 1789, the constitution they drafted made no mention of parties and all.
I think the Founding Fathers were operating from a perspective where they had the English experience in view, they had the experience of the Italian city-states, the Roman Republic, the Greek polis, where they felt that parties tend to be illegitimate. There was still a feeling in the air that to systematically oppose the people that were in charge of the government-- which is what an opposition party does, typically-- was somehow illegitimate and you really shouldn't do that.
Despite that, the seeds of today's two party political system were soon planted, during the first administration of the first American president, George Washington.
Washington's cabinet included two brilliant and powerful men with opposing views of America's future. Thomas Jefferson, the Secretary of State, and Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury. Jefferson hoped America would remain a nation of independent farmers and yeomen like those in his home state of Virginia. And so, he wanted to limit the federal government and leave important decisions to the states.

Early in march I wrote you about Ayman Sulmane Kamal being interdicted crossing the Southern border with Mexico. I appreciated the reply received 29 March 2007 by( EM ). This individual, and the inability to find out what has happened, outlines the issue between our government and ourselves. Totally disconnected. Either there is war on terror or there is not. The border situation is a mess, people all over the country are having to deal with drugs, vicious gangs, illegal documents as in our own state, and all for a head of lettuce. More people have died at the hands of illegals than in the Iraq war. The evidently craven grasp for political power, over any and all common morality, by the leftists has become obvious. People all over the country want reform, simply true reform, not ( wolf in sheep's clothing ) reform. Now: Specifically: ( and again ) what has happened to this man? Please look into the arrest and inform me of the current details. The (CBP) is not interested in you gaining this information, and is obviously stonewalling you. It is my request that you gain some allies and make another request. The only reason for the reluctance, is to continue to pretend that we are safe. This for Nafta and SPP. This while they advise of a possible attack this summer. What hypocrisy. I am supporting you. This man is an excellent example for you to use in your reelection campaign. He is a factual border crosser, and might have ties to groups intent on harming us. This example would separate you from the left and from the right. Ignore the lobbyist and the DHS.
