Seven Criteria for Building an AWS Global Transit NetworkKhash Nakhostin
Global Transit Network architecture is critical to the success of your AWS cloud deployment. Implemented correctly, a Global Transit Hub enables traffic to securely flow from on-prem to VPCs, or from VPC to VPC, in a way that minimizes complexity and cost and maximizes agility and availability. Implemented poorly, it becomes a choke point that is time-consuming – and costly – to maintain and troubleshoot.

Five Connectivity and Security Use Cases for Azure VNetsKhash Nakhostin
As you complete your plans for moving IT infrastructure and application workloads to Azure, it’s important to understand what connectivity and security services Microsoft includes by default – and what’s missing. Though Azure comes with baseline capabilities, it’s still up to you to choose judiciously among many Azure-native and third-party options to address unique requirements. This session explores use cases, such as encrypting traffic between VNets holding sensitive data, remote user access to VNets, multi-cloud connectivity, and filtering egress traffic to the Internet.
We cover the questions you should be asking: what are the key issues that matter, what does Microsoft provide, and what’s missing? We address these questions for each of the five most common use cases:
On-prem to VNet
VNet to VNet
VNet to Internet (Egress)
User to VNet
VNet to AWS VPC
We then demonstrate how a software-defined approach can deliver simplified and unified control over cloud routing, embracing both Azure-native and third-party services.
Network Troubleshooting in the Cloud: Tools, Techniques and GotchasKhash Nakhostin
When someone reports an EC2 connectivity failure, what do you do? Open your Amazon VPC Console, launch an SSH session, and start typing CLI commands in search of clues.
Common root causes include problems related to:
Route table updates
Phantom network ACLs
Security policies
Missing BGP routes
Overfilling route tables or summarization mistakes
Moreover, in many cases, networking is not an issue, but valuable time is lost eliminating the network as a cause before you can progress. Unfortunately, AWS does not natively provide the visibility and troubleshooting features needed by CloudOps and DevOps teams to identify and resolve problems quickly.

Amazon Web Services and PaaS - Enterprise Java for the Cloud Era? - Mark Pric...jaxconf
The extraordinary growth of Java during the last decade owed everything to the set of infrastructure services that application servers provided as part of the platform. However, TCO eventually drove the move to the cloud and PaaS (Platform as a Service) is set to deliver a standard run-time for the next generation of applications, replacing the proprietary infrastructure provided by the application server vendors. Now the question is: where do developers of real-world business applications look for a common set of standard infrastructure services? Is there a common framework that can provide essential application services, such as message queueing, push notifications, email integration, in-memory caching and processing? Amazon Web Services (AWS) with their highly-scaleable IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) model are an obvious answer, but how best to combine Java's rich ecosystem of tools, frameworks and knowledge with the scale and cost-effectiveness of cloud-based web services? This session will help you to understand how you can deliver applications that make effective use of those services by using a Java PaaS, without being forced to support the underlying infrastructure. In this code-rich session, aimed at architects and developers, Mark Prichard of CloudBees will show how you can: Pass Amazon security credentials and configuration parameters to PaaS applications at run-time to provide customized environments; use JDBC and Amazon RDS (Relational Data Service) to provide resilient and performant relational data servicesReplace JMS queues and topics with Amazon SQS (Simple Queue Service) and SNS (Simple Notification Service) to develop cloud-based messaging applications; use Amazon's SES (Simple Email Service) from Java applications. We'll also look at other cloud e-mail services that offer easy integration with the PaaS modelRun distributed caching solutions in the cloud using Amazon ElastiCache's in-memory distributed caching with Java PaaS deployments.

Key questions that we hear from enterprise customers include: Where do I start? What are the technical skill sets needed? What are the necessary skills for architecting cloud applications and hybrid applications? Who will take care of operations on a day to day basis? How do I monitor my cloud for costs, security, availability, performance? Is my organization ready for DevOps, and when does that become important? What specific roles will I need to develop? If any of these questions are familiar to you, attend this session and learn about the skills, learning opportunities, and training available to build the technical and operational capability to take advantage of the AWS cloud. Expect to walk out with a mental roadmap of the cloud skillset you want to develop for your team.

AWS CloudFormation Automation, TrafficScript, and Serverless architecture wit...PolarSeven Pty Ltd
Chris Kawchuck has 20 years experience in the Telecom and Service provider industry. He will be demonstrating how easy it is to spin up a Brocade vADC in AWS; enabling serverless architectures using S3 buckets, and accomplish real-time traffic rewrites to get you out of sticky situations.
Learn about:
1. Load balancing and scaling options available on AWS
2. Automating the Brocade vADC spin up using Cloudformation Templates
3. Enabling use of "Serverless" web pages in AWS 4.Taking care of tricky situations using TrafficScript
Implementing any 3rd party Load Balancer from the Amazon AWS Marketplace can be a daunting task. Not only does one have to learn the vendor's specific interface, you also need to perform quite a few administrative tasks to setup front end IPs, back end pools, clustering, and so on.
Brocade has published a CloudFormation Template (CFT) which takes all the hard work out of setting it up and operating. Using DevOps tools and open source scripts, we not only automate the deployment of the Brocade vADC within AWS, but all the configuration you need to administer, cluster, and provision your Load Balancers; including public IPs and your back-end server pools.
We would like you to try it, and take advantage of the powerful feature of the Brocade vADC.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
