Matt Williams, Datadog Just as we got a hang of monitoring our server-based applications, they take away the server. How do you monitor something that doesn’t exist? What metrics matter most in a serverless world? In this session, we will look at how applications are different in a AWS Lambda-based world and how to monitor them. Join us as we work our way through the stack and demonstrate how to capture the health and performance of your services. The focus of this session is not tool specific. Attendees will learn production tested lessons and leave with frameworks they can implement with their serverless workloads regardless of the platforms and tools they use.

The talk will focus on how we are utilizing AWS Lambda for certain applications and the advantages/disadvantages, and the challenges we discovered along the way. It would help those who are looking to reduce technical debt with the infrastructure and costs. Previously a Director of technical operations at fox networks (21st Century Fox/News Corporation) responsible for infrastructure and building deployment pipelines. Currently a Python programmer / DevOps engineer with roots in systems/networks administration. Focus is on infrastructure and application automation. OpenStack as a Service enables Adminstrators to move upstack and concentrate more on helping their users and less on the low level details of managing their cloud hardware and software. However, this can come at a perceived cost: Cloud Administrators are used to being able log in to devices in their networks and see exactly what is going on. In this presentation, we show how providing Admins with enhanced platform visibility through features like LiveStats and Historical Metrics can obsolete the requirement that Admins have root access to every device in their clouds, and enable them to invest their time and energy in areas where their users will benefit the most.

OSGi Community Event 2017 Presentation by Christian Schneider [Adobe] In a highly distributed world it is crucial to have the best possible insights into your application. In the old days we achieved this using plain logging and jmx. This does not scale well to highly distributed processing like in microservices though. This talk shows how to pimp you OSGi based systems with top notch monitoring and tracing capabilities. Using Apache Karaf Decanter we let karaf instances log into a common elastic search instance with almost zero effort and get insights using kibana. The Apache CXF REST and SOAP integrations allow to log and correlate service requests and replies. Building on top of this we use the OSGi based reactive components framework and reactor.io streams to provide complex event processing capabilties. A typical use case for this is to describe and monitor service level agreements.

We'll examine some principles that are signs of a mature DevOps practice and use examples from the Librato move from EC2 Classic to VPC and the next generation platform we built in the process to demonstrate how adherence to those principles allow us to deliver value to the business faster and more reliably than ever before.

Durch den Einzug von Cloud Computing erleben wir in der IT ein Wandel von Infrastructure as a Serivce (IaaS) über Software as a Serivce (SaaS) & Platform as a Service (PaaS) bis hin zu Function as a Service (FaaS) – auch bekannt unter dem Begriff Serverless Computing. Die Vorteile liegen dabei auf der Hand: bedarfsgerechte Abrechnung, schnelle und hohe Skalierbarkeit und eine einfache Möglichkeit den Ansatz von Microservices schnell und einfach umzusetzen. Der Einsatz von FaaS nimmt stark zu – auch wenn gleich viele diese Funktionen nur als kleine Helferlein benutzen und selten fester Bestandteil in einer Anwendung sind. Wie die Haufe.Group es geschafft hat, ganze Workflows und eine ganze Applikation rein auf FaaS aufzubauen und über 100 verschiedene Funktionen orchestriert bekommt, wird der Fokus des Vortrags sein. Dabei steht im Mittelpunkt das Analysieren & Importieren mehrere tausend Dokumente pro Sekunde. Zur Bewältigung dieser Aufgabe setzt die Haufe.Group auf die AWS Cloud und deren Services, wie auch das OpenSource Framework „Serverless Framework“ auf die im Vortrag eingegangen wird.

This talk should get you thinking, why service levels are not supposed to be thought as a sequence of 9s, but how to take more holistic approach and how to think of investing in the resilience the correct amount before going live and running in production. zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second). Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM). A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI support

This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
