Georgia History Chapter 4
Hernando De Soto explored Georgia in 1540 searching for gold but found none. He and his men overwhelmed native peoples with weapons and horses, introducing smallpox that killed thousands. In the late 1600s, England began establishing colonies along the Atlantic coast and wanted a buffer colony between Spanish Florida and their other colonies, leading to the founding of Georgia in the 1730s. James Oglethorpe and others established the colony, founding the city of Savannah along a planned grid. Early colonists struggled but more immigrants arrived, and the colony grew and transitioned to practices like slavery and large plantations.

Between 1450-1650, the Spanish and Portuguese explored and colonized much of the world. The Spanish explored westward while the Portuguese explored eastward. Their main motivations were to find safer trade routes for spices from Asia, gain new lands and resources for their kingdoms, convert native peoples to Christianity, and pursue wealth and fame. New ship technologies like the caravel and navigation tools like the compass enabled these voyages. Notable figures included Columbus, who sailed west to reach Asia but landed in the Americas, and Portuguese explorers like Da Gama and Diaz who reached Asia by sailing around Africa. The conquests had massive consequences, including the destruction of native American civilizations, European colonization of the Americas
John davis
John Davis (1543-1605) was an English mariner and explorer born in Devon, England who made three attempts to find the northwest passage. On his first voyage he discovered what is now called the Davis Strait. He explored the east coast of Baffin Island and the west coast of Greenland, and sighted and landed on the Falkland Islands. Davis braved freezing temperatures, ferocious gales, and other hardships in his voyages and explorations. He made important contributions to navigation, cartography, and observations of Arctic weather and geography.

Henry Hudson was an English explorer in the early 1600s who led four expeditions trying to find a northern passage to Asia over the top of the world. His explorations for the Dutch led him to discover the river that would be named after him, the Hudson River, and the area that would later become New York City. On his final expedition for the English, Hudson explored north into Hudson Bay but his crew mutinied and left him adrift, and he was never seen again.
Age of exploration, section 1
Early Portuguese and Spanish explorations were primarily motivated by the desire to find a direct trade route to Asia for lucrative spices. Led by Prince Henry of Portugal, the Portuguese pioneered exploration down the coast of Africa, hoping to reach Asia and its spice-producing islands. Notable explorers included Vasco da Gama, who reached India by sailing around Africa in 1498. Christopher Columbus, sponsored by the Spanish monarchs, sailed west in 1492 hoping to reach Asia but instead discovered the Americas. Henry believed he had found the western ocean, he thought it would take him to Asia. In the middle of winter Henry got trapped at what is now Hudson Bay. The harsh winter made his crew suffer from starvation and scurvy. Giovanni Da Verrazano was first a pirate, preying on Spanish and Portugal sea vessels. King Francis 1 asked Giovanni to go search for the North West Passage.King Francis 1 knew he was going against The treaty of Tordesillas. He made a official French expedition because he was aware of the riches to be gained. While he was sailing he saw a narrow strip of land, Pamlico Sound which is part of the Atlantic ocean. He thought that North was split into two and Pamlico Sound is connecting it. His error was made into two maps and the error stayed for a century. There are many reasons for Exploration. One is that they needed spices, they need to preserve their meat with salt. So it tasted pretty bad, with spices they could make it tasted good or very better.Another reason is that they wanted to spread their religion. They wanna make people become christian. Another reason is to gain riches.
