Automated Number Plate Recognition(ANPR)
Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
• Invented in 1976 in UK by Police Scientific Development Branch
(PSDB).
• Camera based Technology that performs Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) on images to read License Plates (LP) of Vehicles.
• Real time detection of English Alpha-numeric characters of LP
number.
• ANPR cameras are specialized type of CCTV cameras.
OPTICAL CHARACTER RECOGNITION (OCR)
OCR is a Scanning technology that converts printed or handwritten
images into editable text.

WHY TO USE ANPR SYSTEM?
• Round the clock monitoring of Vehicles.
• To Reduce burglaries
• To ease the process of Toll Management.
• To reduce crime.
• Challan generation to violators for violating Traffic rules.
• Ability to automate access control systems (premise, parking
entry/exit).

Process Flow
Cameras always in Active Mode and does not require any trigger
If any vehicle comes in FOV, ANPR camera locates the license
number plate
LPU performs OCR on captured number plate image & saves in
JPEG format the database
Processing takes place locally and data transfers to Control Room
periodically
If network gets break, then data will be saved locally for at least 7
days
Transaction Details
 Each vehicle record will be a single file and contain the following::
• Vehicle Registration Number
• Date & Time
• ANPR Site Location
• Lane Number
• Image of the number plate
 Approximate size of single file will be around 1 MB.
 Transaction size varies as per camera requirement and will increase with
increase in resolution.
Graphic User Interface (GUI)
Vehicle Tracking through ANPR System
Key Features of ANPR System
 Placement of cameras can be from backside or frontside.
 System captures the image of all vehicles moving at a speed upto 150kmph.
 Automated 24*7 surveillance
 Auto alerts for notifying Hot-listed - Stolen, Suspected, Wanted/VIP vehicles
 Capable of detecting and recognizing license plate numbers of four
wheelers, 2-3 wheelers, LMV & HMV.
 Multiple entry points can be integrated together at a single central console
 Category management - Create or upload vehicle details for creating hot-list
 Can be integrated with Video management software (VMS)
Application Areas of ANPR
 Parking Management
 Tolling at Toll Plaza
 City/State Border Control
 Traffic Laws Enforcement
 City Surveillance
