An international consortium led by Autodisplay Biotech GmbH has started a €1.6 million R&D project called PATHWAY EFB to lower the cost of cellulases in producing biofuels and biochemicals through enzyme recycling. The project aims to develop a cellulase blend and process optimized to convert empty fruit bunches, a waste product from palm oil production, into fermentable sugars. The consortium includes universities and companies from Germany and Malaysia and seeks to build a pilot plant in Malaysia to convert empty fruit bunches while addressing methane emissions from waste piles.
