Portia Nelson describes falling repeatedly into the same hole in the sidewalk as she walks down the street. The first time she falls in she feels lost and desperate, blaming others for her situation. The second time she pretends not to see the hole but still does not take responsibility for her actions. The third time, she recognizes the hole and her habit of falling in, acknowledging it is her fault. The fourth time, she walks around the hole altogether.
