SE Faculty in ANZ
13
Gender Diversity
▪ Total listed Faculty in ANZ: 61
▪ 11F/50M (18%/72%)
14
So, a strong base to build on…
15
But what next?
(1) Define a vision and strategy for SE research in
Australasia
(2) Work as a team of researchers not a set of individuals
(3) Nurture and support emerging researchers
(4) Think globally not locally
(5) Work across disciplines
16
What’s in a vision?
▪ Clear aspirational goals we can all (or almost all) buy into
– Examples:
▪ Metrics driven goals: e.g. 3rd in the world in terms of # ICSE
submitting authors
▪ Theme based goals: e.g. be globally recognized for leading the way
in human aspects of SE research
▪ Diversity based goals: e.g. 33% female PhD students across ANZ
▪ Team based goals: e.g. every academic co-authors with collaborator
from a top 20 SE research group in the world
▪ Niche-based goals: e.g., recognized for research with industry
▪ Clear themes that define what we do
– E.g. at Monash:
▪ Social and ethical software
▪ Software quality
▪ AI and automation
17
What’s in a strategy?
▪ SMART objectives designed to move towards the vision
& actions to achieve those objectives
▪ Example:
Objective Actions
Increase av. cites per person by
50% by 2021
(1) Raise visibility: hold an ANZ
workshop for high profile
international visitors between
ICSME 2020 and ASE 2020
(2) Submit 5 workshop proposals
for ICSE 2020 with ANZ
organizers
(3) Actively look for opportunities
to cite work by other ANZ
researchers
18
Work as a team
▪ Again, comes back to the vision/strategy
▪ Action this by:
– A “gathering” strategy
▪ Use meetings like this to further our agenda
– A network of PhD students
– Social media/Comms strategy
– A network of senior leaders: lobby ARC, government etc.
– Identify emerging leaders: formal/informal mentoring
19
Support Emerging Researchers
▪ This all requires leaders
– And NEW leaders
– Again, I say NEW leaders
– Did I say NEW leaders?
▪ Name names…..
▪ it is YOUR responsibility….
But let’s mentor them: let’s agree a mentor network TODAY
20
Think Globally not Locally
▪ ASWEC
▪ Use it to implement these strategic objectives
▪ Good things about it in 2018/ bad things about it in 2018
▪ We MUST target top conferences and journals though
▪ And sometimes you need to think locally (e.g., ARC)
21
Work across disciplines
▪ Little funding for purely SE projects
▪ Look to partner with zeitgeist projects
– Digital health [e.g. $20Bn MRFF]
– AI [expected to be $15Trn business by 2030]
– Values/Ethics [e.g. £150M Schwarzmann donation to Oxford for
AI/Ethics]
– Cybersecurity
– SE can and does contribute to all of these – you just need to find
the right pitch
– The danger is it takes you too far away from SE – but not always
a bad thing
22
So: some suggestions
▪ Vision/Strategy
– use meetings like this to develop a vision [next one in
Melbourne?]
▪ Networks
– PhD network
– Senior leaders network
– Mentoring network
▪ International Visibility
– ICSE workshop organisation
– ASE/ICSME 2020 “sandwich” workshop
▪ Social Media/Comms
▪ Cite each other
By far the most important
thing is to step up
