Latest Business Survey Results Inside
NEWSLETTER
CHRIS SUTTON - TOWN CENTRE MANAGER
Firstly, thank you to the 136 businesses that took the time to complete the Business Survey; we appreciate your valuable
feedback. It was fantastic to see that overall business trading in Panmure is going strong.
Such a great response from the participating businesses has provided valuable insights to assist the Board in making sure
the targeted Business Improvement District rate is spent wisely, as well as to help the Board plan for future projects.
Your feedback, both positive and negative has been collated and analysed by Renu Ryder, with the full survey results given
to the Board in July for them to read and comment on at the August Board meeting. In this issue of the Panmure Business
Newsletter, we have published some of the more straightforward results. We aim to collate and respond to the comment’s
given and to highlight any feedback received from the Board in a future newsletter.
On a personal note, I was impressed that the average length of time for businesses to be trading in our community was 11
years and that 60% of the respondents wanted a paper-based ‘Business Directory,’ confirming that our team is on the right
track, as that is one of the projects we are currently working on.
Please don’t wait for our next survey to let us know what you think! You can drop by anytime during business hours, give
me a call on 527 6389 or send me an email at manager@panmure.net.nz
Worth a mention, is that recently I was
asked to speak at the graduation of 64 older
Chinese new migrant students that had just
completed their very first course in learning
basic English. The oldest student was in
her 80’s and did not miss a single English
class during the course. It was terrific to
see age being no barrier to learning a new
language.
The Chinese New Settlers Services Trust, at
20 – 22 Clifton Court offers a diverse range
of social and educational services. The aim
of the English class is to assist new migrants
with their settlement into the New Zealand
way of life. The course runs twice a year.
If your business lies within the Panmure Mainstreet area (Queens Road, Ellerslie/Panmure Highway and adjacent side
streets) you are automatically a Member of Panmure Business Association and are paying .02c in the dollar of your general
rates towards funding the Association. How the combined money is spent is determined by elected board members, any of
whom would be happy to talk with you, tell you more about who they are, and hear your comments or suggestions.

Key survey findings are:
• Overall business confidence in Panmure seems to
positive with a general increase in staffing and a
high recommendation score to promote Panmure
as a destination to start a business
• Security perceptions have improved markedly
• Satisfaction with PBA communication and service
levels are high
That’s just one of the insights from the 2016 Panmure Business Survey. It’s great to know business is looking up in Panmure
compared to last year!
We had a fantastic response with some 58% of businesses sharing their views with the Panmure Business Association
during April/May. That phenomenal response shows Panmure businesses really are engaged in the area and its future
growth.

There was a marked increase in customers coming from outside Panmure and a solid increase
in both new customers frequenting businesses within the area and those deemed ‘regular
customers’
The PBA will:
• Discuss with the PBA Board for further feedback/comment
• Determine whether there any ‘quick wins’ from this survey. Are there any ideas worth investigating
further?
• Review PBA Strategic and Tactical Plans in light of survey insights/Board feedback
• We will report back on the Board’s feedback and address comments made by survey respondents in an
upcoming newsletter
So that’s this year’s survey done and dusted. It was 2012 when we did the last one. We’ll do it again more
regularly now that there is a team in place to make it happen.
Thanks again to all respondents; we really value your opinions.
So, where to from here? What are our next steps?

Drop into CopyStop and meet Raj. He’s been in the
industry for 12 years and started his own business
in Panmure in 2013, so he’s well established here.
Not one to stay with the status quo, Raj has
recently introduced dimensional letter signage
to his portfolio, to further develop his business.
He spent six months learning this special cutting
technique, and his customers are already enjoying
the benefits.
Dimensional letter signs are for indoor/outdoor
use and are made from materials such as PVC,
acrylic, wood, ACM, foam and corflute. They can
withstand the elements, and outdoor dimensional
signs are a great way to instantly enhance your
business’ look and aesthetic appeal.
Raj can also work his magic with car wraps
(signage) and window
protection, which
can strengthen glass
windows, so they are
not easily broken.
Perfect!

Feng En Mao Cai opened its doors 18
months ago. Back then there was no
English menu or signage. However,
since the recent Tastes of Panmure
promotion, they realised that they
want to introduce this delectable
food to Kiwis too. So now English is
on the menu, literally!
So what exactly is Mao Cai for the
uninitiated?
Mao Cai means hotpot for one,
hotpot for many. In Sichuan dialect
Mao Cai refers to the process of blanching ingredients by moving
the ingredient-filled colander up and down rapidly in boiling water.
The cooked ingredients are then served in a huge bowl of fiery red
soup with seasonings like ginger, garlic, black soy bean, chilli bean
paste, and of course, Sichuan peppercorns.
Feng En Mao Cai recently introduced these sumptuous new dishes
to their menu: Sichuan Style Won Tons, Sichuan Style Dumplings
and Five Colour Steam Dumplings. Give
your tastebuds a treat by trying one

now cooking up an Indian taste sensation.
Just because he’s new, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the goods
to deliver. He has 10 years of quality chef experience (in European

Having lived in Ellerslie some 12
years ago, he’s now discovered a lot
of changes in Panmure: a new train
station, lots of cars, more houses, and
an increased population.
Jai is very much looking forward to running a successful business in Panmure. He’d like to

Unichem Panmure Pharmacy is
part of the community effort to
prevent the spread of rheumatic
fever by treating and swabbing
sore throats in children for free,
seven days a week.
Sore throats are common in
children. Most sore throats are
caused by viruses and need no
treatment other than pain relief.
Sometimes children can get ‘strep
throat’. A rare complication of
strep throat is rheumatic fever.
Māori and Pacific children are
most at risk of rheumatic fever,
and should see a doctor with any
sore throat.
• rheumatic fever starts with
a sore throat that is known as
‘strep throat’ – a throat infection
caused by a bacteria called Group
A streptococcus
• most sore throats get better on
their own, but if strep throat is
not treated with antibiotics it can
cause rheumatic fever in at-risk
children
• because rheumatic fever is such
a serious illness, all sore throats
in Māori and Pacific children and
young people (aged 4 and above)
need to be checked
• if your child has strep throat,
they’ll be given antibiotics to
clear up the infection before it
can develop into rheumatic fever
• if your child is given antibiotics
it’s important that they take the
full 10-day course to stop them
from developing rheumatic fever.
So come and see the pharmacists
any time, 7 days a week at
Unichem Panmure Pharmacy. No
appointment is necessary. We
care for our community.

One of the roles of the Panmure
Business Association (PBA) is to
advocate for positive changes that
will support the growth and financial
viability of our business community.
Recently,thePBApreparedadocument
for the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local
Board and Auckland Transport that
asked questions about the informal
‘park and ride’ area that has grown
substantially over the past six months.
This informal park and ride area is on
vacant land, bordered by Jellicoe and
Mountain Roads and Potaka Lane.
From a public transport user’s view,
the fact that so many people are using
the area to park and catch a train at
the Panmure Station is a good thing.
From an economic development
view, this prime land so close to a
train station does not add anything
at all to the vitality of our town, nor
encourages vital economic investment
and development.
“The Panmure Business Association
has stated for many years now that we
do not want to see cars lined up all day
in these park and ride spaces, what we
want is to see property investment on
those sites,” says Chris, Town Centre
Manager.
Some quotes from Chris, from the
PBA 2016 submission on the Auckland
Council Annual Budget:
“Regularmaintenanceisneededonthe
sites and it is a common experience for
the drivers to return to their cars only
to find that they have been blocked in.”
“Can you provide a greater
understanding as to what the planners
are thinking…
- who is maintaining this area?
- what is being planned for this
area?
- when will we see this area being
developed?”
Just two weeks after sending in
the request for more information
to Auckland Transport, Chris had a
visit from Nazim and Alok, Auckland
Transport Officers, to discuss the
town’s concerns. The outcome of
the meeting was that the questions
were addressed; in regards to seeing
development of this land, that will be
sadly some way off into the future,
there will be some form of regular
maintenance and a formal review of
the park and ride area has been added
to Auckland Transport’s work plan.

In the early 1990’s, as part of the
town centre upgrade, the Panmure
Roundabout sign and two community
noticeboards were installed. The
theme reflected the massive growth to
the township of Panmure in the 1950’s,
hence the space odyssey themed
roundabout sign and the juke box
themednoticeboardswiththeircurved
frames. Over the last few years, the
physical structure of the noticeboards
had decreased dramatically to a point
where they leaked and one of the
hinges had rusted right through. The
Board decided to replace the three
noticeboards with a design that was
more modern and easy to use. They
were very keen to install a digital sign
at the traffic lights but permission from
Auckland Transport was not granted,
due to the site being so close to the
traffic lights. The noticeboard next to
DTR is for community notices and the
Dove Arcade and Urban Cuts signs are
for events and promotions. Currently
there are four large sector-specific
advertising posters on
display.
Alan Duncan, PBA
Board member and
owner of the Loft
Dance Studio in Korma
Lane, contributed to
this project with his
engineering knowledge
and suggested a ‘relief’
pattern on the metal
surface that reflected
existing design within
our town centre.
The Board settled
on a pattern
from the façade
of the building
that runs from
Gentle Dental
to Supavalue
Supermarket.

board they are

SAFETY & SECURITY
In our recent Panmure Business
Survey 49% respondents said
that safety and security had
either improved or significantly
improved since last year. Great to
hear our businesses are benefiting
from our investment in CCTV and
our security patrol.
One of the comments from the

was “Bring back criminal photos.”
We need to gently remind
businesses that identifying and
prosecuting criminals is the role
of the NZ Police, not the Business

  • 1. NEWSLETTER Monthly Panmure Business Association Newsletter Issue 138, August 2016 Panmure Business Trading Up Latest Business Survey Results Inside
  • 2. NEWSLETTER CHRIS SUTTON - TOWN CENTRE MANAGER Firstly, thank you to the 136 businesses that took the time to complete the Business Survey; we appreciate your valuable feedback. It was fantastic to see that overall business trading in Panmure is going strong. Such a great response from the participating businesses has provided valuable insights to assist the Board in making sure the targeted Business Improvement District rate is spent wisely, as well as to help the Board plan for future projects. Your feedback, both positive and negative has been collated and analysed by Renu Ryder, with the full survey results given to the Board in July for them to read and comment on at the August Board meeting. In this issue of the Panmure Business Newsletter, we have published some of the more straightforward results. We aim to collate and respond to the comment’s given and to highlight any feedback received from the Board in a future newsletter. On a personal note, I was impressed that the average length of time for businesses to be trading in our community was 11 years and that 60% of the respondents wanted a paper-based ‘Business Directory,’ confirming that our team is on the right track, as that is one of the projects we are currently working on. Please don’t wait for our next survey to let us know what you think! You can drop by anytime during business hours, give me a call on 527 6389 or send me an email at manager@panmure.net.nz Worth a mention, is that recently I was asked to speak at the graduation of 64 older Chinese new migrant students that had just completed their very first course in learning basic English. The oldest student was in her 80’s and did not miss a single English class during the course. It was terrific to see age being no barrier to learning a new language. The Chinese New Settlers Services Trust, at 20 – 22 Clifton Court offers a diverse range of social and educational services. The aim of the English class is to assist new migrants with their settlement into the New Zealand way of life. The course runs twice a year. If your business lies within the Panmure Mainstreet area (Queens Road, Ellerslie/Panmure Highway and adjacent side streets) you are automatically a Member of Panmure Business Association and are paying .02c in the dollar of your general rates towards funding the Association. How the combined money is spent is determined by elected board members, any of whom would be happy to talk with you, tell you more about who they are, and hear your comments or suggestions. Panmure Business Association services include: Panmure Christmas Parade & Festival, Monthly Business Newsletter, CCTV, Graffiti Removal, Security Patrol, Under Veranda Lighting, Tastes of Panmure Promotion, Business Networking, supporting local Community Events www.panmure.net.nz Sharon Stephens Tamariki Ataahua Early Learning Centre 527 1961 (Chairman) Gary Davison Salvation Army 159 Queens Road 527 7143 (VC) Douglas White Kiwibank 272 2941 (Treasurer) Alan Duncan The Loft Dance Studio 021 1722136 Greg Woodcock Akl Psychological Associates Ltd 570 6370 Nicolette McDonald Unichem Pharmacy 527 7719 Josephine Bartley Maungakiekie - Tāmaki Local Board Representative Keyur Patel Co-opt member Tāmaki Redevelopement Company 138P.1 CNNST new migrants English course graduation
  • 3. NEWSLETTER Key survey findings are: • Overall business confidence in Panmure seems to positive with a general increase in staffing and a high recommendation score to promote Panmure as a destination to start a business • Security perceptions have improved markedly • Satisfaction with PBA communication and service levels are high That’s just one of the insights from the 2016 Panmure Business Survey. It’s great to know business is looking up in Panmure compared to last year! We had a fantastic response with some 58% of businesses sharing their views with the Panmure Business Association during April/May. That phenomenal response shows Panmure businesses really are engaged in the area and its future growth. Panmure business trading on the increase 138 P.2 60% of businesses told us their trading is the same or better than the previous year! • Not all PBA activities are valued equally. Further thought/cost benefit analysis is needed here • An increased awareness of BID membership is needed (each business in Panmure is automatically a member of the PBA) • Around half of Panmure businesses ask for help from the PBA during the year Some of the question results in detail: Comment: The top 3 business sectors in Panmure are Food Outlets, Retail Other, and Medical

  • 7. NEWSLETTER 138 P.6 Comment: There was a marked increase in customers coming from outside Panmure and a solid increase in both new customers frequenting businesses within the area and those deemed ‘regular customers’ The PBA will: • Discuss with the PBA Board for further feedback/comment • Determine whether there any ‘quick wins’ from this survey. Are there any ideas worth investigating further? • Review PBA Strategic and Tactical Plans in light of survey insights/Board feedback • We will report back on the Board’s feedback and address comments made by survey respondents in an upcoming newsletter So that’s this year’s survey done and dusted. It was 2012 when we did the last one. We’ll do it again more regularly now that there is a team in place to make it happen. Thanks again to all respondents; we really value your opinions. So, where to from here? What are our next steps? Remember, you can always pop in to 16 Clifton Court, Panmure or phone us on 527 6389 with any comments or suggestions.

  • 10. NEWSLETTER Drop into CopyStop and meet Raj. He’s been in the industry for 12 years and started his own business in Panmure in 2013, so he’s well established here. Not one to stay with the status quo, Raj has recently introduced dimensional letter signage to his portfolio, to further develop his business. He spent six months learning this special cutting technique, and his customers are already enjoying the benefits. Dimensional letter signs are for indoor/outdoor use and are made from materials such as PVC, acrylic, wood, ACM, foam and corflute. They can withstand the elements, and outdoor dimensional signs are a great way to instantly enhance your business’ look and aesthetic appeal. Raj can also work his magic with car wraps (signage) and window protection, which can strengthen glass windows, so they are not easily broken. Perfect! 138 Feng En Mao Cai opened its doors 18 months ago. Back then there was no English menu or signage. However, since the recent Tastes of Panmure promotion, they realised that they want to introduce this delectable food to Kiwis too. So now English is on the menu, literally! So what exactly is Mao Cai for the uninitiated? Mao Cai means hotpot for one, hotpot for many. In Sichuan dialect Mao Cai refers to the process of blanching ingredients by moving the ingredient-filled colander up and down rapidly in boiling water. The cooked ingredients are then served in a huge bowl of fiery red soup with seasonings like ginger, garlic, black soy bean, chilli bean paste, and of course, Sichuan peppercorns. Feng En Mao Cai recently introduced these sumptuous new dishes to their menu: Sichuan Style Won Tons, Sichuan Style Dumplings and Five Colour Steam Dumplings. Give your tastebuds a treat by trying one today! • 11. NEWSLETTER Indian Pepper has a new owner, Jai Nair, a first time business owner, now cooking up an Indian taste sensation. Just because he’s new, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the goods to deliver. He has 10 years of quality chef experience (in European food) in India, the US and NZ. Jai has even worked in a production kitchen (for flight meals) for six years in NZ. Having lived in Ellerslie some 12 years ago, he’s now discovered a lot of changes in Panmure: a new train station, lots of cars, more houses, and an increased population. Jai is very much looking forward to running a successful business in Panmure. He’d like to make changes on the menu from time to time, so why not offer your ideas to him, maybe there’s a favourite you’d like that’s not on the menu. PhysioACTION has a fresh face in their team – he’s all the way from Ireland. Shane O’Neill graduated from The University of Ulster in 2011 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and has since completed several post graduate qualifications. Shane has a particular interest in assessment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, post-surgical orthopaedic patients and sports injuries. He enjoys using his acupuncture and pilates qualifications to assist him with providing a quality outcome for his patients. Shane moved to NZ in late 2015 and joined the PhysioAction team in 2016. Does he like potatoes? You’ll have to ask him! As always, Airia continues to work at the Panmure clinic in the mornings. 138 Unichem Panmure Pharmacy is part of the community effort to prevent the spread of rheumatic fever by treating and swabbing sore throats in children for free, seven days a week. Sore throats are common in children. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and need no treatment other than pain relief. Sometimes children can get ‘strep throat’. A rare complication of strep throat is rheumatic fever. Māori and Pacific children are most at risk of rheumatic fever, and should see a doctor with any sore throat. • rheumatic fever starts with a sore throat that is known as ‘strep throat’ – a throat infection caused by a bacteria called Group A streptococcus • most sore throats get better on their own, but if strep throat is not treated with antibiotics it can cause rheumatic fever in at-risk children • because rheumatic fever is such a serious illness, all sore throats in Māori and Pacific children and young people (aged 4 and above) need to be checked • if your child has strep throat, they’ll be given antibiotics to clear up the infection before it can develop into rheumatic fever • if your child is given antibiotics it’s important that they take the full 10-day course to stop them from developing rheumatic fever. So come and see the pharmacists any time, 7 days a week at Unichem Panmure Pharmacy. No appointment is necessary. We care for our community. • 13. NEWSLETTER One of the roles of the Panmure Business Association (PBA) is to advocate for positive changes that will support the growth and financial viability of our business community. Recently, thePBApreparedadocument for the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board and Auckland Transport that asked questions about the informal ‘park and ride’ area that has grown substantially over the past six months. This informal park and ride area is on vacant land, bordered by Jellicoe and Mountain Roads and Potaka Lane. From a public transport user’s view, the fact that so many people are using the area to park and catch a train at the Panmure Station is a good thing. From an economic development view, this prime land so close to a train station does not add anything at all to the vitality of our town, nor encourages vital economic investment and development. “The Panmure Business Association has stated for many years now that we do not want to see cars lined up all day in these park and ride spaces, what we want is to see property investment on those sites,” says Chris, Town Centre Manager. Some quotes from Chris, from the PBA 2016 submission on the Auckland Council Annual Budget: “Regularmaintenanceisneededonthe sites and it is a common experience for the drivers to return to their cars only to find that they have been blocked in.” “Can you provide a greater understanding as to what the planners are thinking… - who is maintaining this area? - what is being planned for this area? - when will we see this area being developed?” Just two weeks after sending in the request for more information to Auckland Transport, Chris had a visit from Nazim and Alok, Auckland Transport Officers, to discuss the town’s concerns. The outcome of the meeting was that the questions were addressed; in regards to seeing development of this land, that will be sadly some way off into the future, there will be some form of regular maintenance and a formal review of the park and ride area has been added to Auckland Transport’s work plan. • 14. NEWSLETTERP.13 In the early 1990’s, as part of the town centre upgrade, the Panmure Roundabout sign and two community noticeboards were installed. The theme reflected the massive growth to the township of Panmure in the 1950’s, hence the space odyssey themed roundabout sign and the juke box themednoticeboardswiththeircurved frames. Over the last few years, the physical structure of the noticeboards had decreased dramatically to a point where they leaked and one of the hinges had rusted right through. The Board decided to replace the three noticeboards with a design that was more modern and easy to use. They were very keen to install a digital sign at the traffic lights but permission from Auckland Transport was not granted, due to the site being so close to the traffic lights. The noticeboard next to DTR is for community notices and the Dove Arcade and Urban Cuts signs are for events and promotions. Currently there are four large sector-specific advertising posters on display. Alan Duncan, PBA Board member and owner of the Loft Dance Studio in Korma Lane, contributed to this project with his engineering knowledge and suggested a ‘relief’ pattern on the metal surface that reflected existing design within our town centre. The Board settled on a pattern from the façade of the building that runs from Gentle Dental to Supavalue Supermarket. Should you wish to have a community notice posted on the board they are updated every weekend. Please kindly supply fliers in A4 or A3 format, for good visual impact and drop them into the PBA at 16 Clifton Court at least a few weeks before any event. 138 Community News From Juke Box stylistics to Daleks The new community noticeboard A handy directoryShowcasing businesses & promotions

Great to hear our businesses are benefiting from our investment in CCTV and our security patrol. One of the comments from the survey when asked what else the PBA can do to help even more was “Bring back criminal photos.” We need to gently remind businesses that identifying and prosecuting criminals is the role of the NZ Police, not the Business Association. 138 The July school holidays have been particularly busy for Chris and me, with groups of young people thinking they own the town. Aggressive and dangerous behaviour was caught on camera in Dunlop Lane but for us to ‘do anything’ with the footage, the victim must report the incident to the Police. So far this has not been done. Because Dunlop Laneisaquickwayto get to the Panmure Station, we have recorded a number of criminal incidents happening to people on the way to catch a train, involving vehicles and young people. We believe that many of these perpetrators then head to Sylvia Park Mall. In fact, we were visited by Constable Doug early last week and he expressed his relief to “get out of Sylvia Park” where the Police are kept very busy with shoplifters and thefts from vehicles.
