The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans began as a city park in the late 19th century and gradually became a full-fledged zoo after an exhibit of caged birds gained public support for housing more animals. After falling into disrepair during the Depression and 1950s, dedicated volunteers and a bond referendum helped finance expansion and improvements to the zoo. Although Hurricane Katrina severely damaged some facilities in 2005, the zoo survived and remains an important tourist attraction for the city as it recovers from the storm.
