This lesson plan teaches students about the standard and metric systems of measurement through music and interactive activities. Students will listen to songs about the different systems and complete crossword puzzles. They will then teach the material to each other. Next, students will become experts on assigned measurement topics and teach their peers. Finally, students will identify concepts they do not understand and ask questions for review. The goal is for students to be able to compare and convert units within and between the standard and metric systems.

Introduction
• Lesson Topic: Mathematics in Song: Standard and Metric System
• Length of Lesson: 90 minutes (1 block).
• VA Standards of Learning: Mathematics 6.9: The student will compare and convert units of measure for
lengths, area, weight/mass, and volume within the U.S. Customary system and the metric system and
estimate conversions between units in each system:
a. length - part of an inch (1/2, ¼, and 1/8), inches, feet, yards, miles, millimeters, centimeters, meters,
and kilometers;
b. weight/mass – ounces, pounds, tons, grams, and kilograms;
c. liquid volume – cups, pints, quarts, gallons, milliliters, and liters
Cognitive Objectives
Students will:
• Compare and convert units of measure for the lengths, area, weight/mass, and volume within the U.S.
Customary system and the metric system.
• Estimate the conversion of units of lengths, area, weight/mass, and volume between the U.S. Customary
system and the metric system by using ballpark comparisons.
• Determine the most appropriate unit of measure for a given situation.

• Laptops and headphones for all students.
• Class website to post audio files.
• Crossword puzzle worksheet (The Standard System) for all students.
• Crossword puzzle worksheet (Meters, Liters and Grams) for all students.

• Framing Routine worksheets for all students.
Teaching and Learning Sequence
Introduction/Anticipatory Set
• Hand out “The Standard System” Crossword Puzzle to half of the class, and “Meters, Liters & Grams”
Crossword Puzzle to the rest of the class.
• Half of students listen to “The Standard System,” and complete the Crossword Puzzle (“The Standard
System”) worksheet.
• The other half of students listen to “Meters, Liters & Grams” and complete the Crossword Puzzle (“Meters,
Liters & Grams”) worksheet.
• Students pair up with another student that listened to the other song:
- Students that listened to “The Standard System” pair up with students that listened to “Meters,
Liters & Grams.”
- Hand out “The Standard System” Crossword Puzzle to students who do not already have the
worksheet.
- Hand out “Meters, Liters & Grams” Crossword Puzzle to students who do not already have the

worksheet.
• In pairs, students teach one another the material they learned from the song:
- Students teach either the Standard Measurement System or the Metric system, depending on what
song they listened to.
- Students complete both “The Standard System” and “Meters, Liters & Grams” Crossword Puzzle
worksheets in pairs.
Lesson Development
• In pairs, students choose from a set list of topics (topics on slips of paper drawn out of a hat).
- Students work in pairs to outline the information in a Framing Routine
- After becoming ‘experts’ on their assigned topic, students teach the information to the rest of the
class using the Framing Routine.
• Walk around and assist students as necessary.
• Students are encouraged to ask any clarifying questions throughout the lesson. ‘Student Experts’ will
answer the question if they can. If not, teacher will answer the question.
Closure
• Each student chooses two Framing Routines that they did not completely understand.
• Based on the two Framing Routines, students write two questions on a sheet of paper, and hand in the piece
of paper as an ‘Exit Ticket’ as they leave class.

• Measurements and Conversions Worksheet (to go along with “The Standard System” song).
• Meters, Liters & Grams Worksheet (to go along with “Meters, Liters & Grams” song).
• Finish Crossword Puzzles (“The Standard System” and “Meters, Liters & Grams”) if you have not already
done so.
Assessment
Formative
• Students review material and teach one another during Anticipatory Set, demonstrating prior and new
knowledge of the subject.
• Students become ‘experts’ on one topic, then teach the topic to the class, demonstrating and solidifying
new knowledge.
Summative
• Homework assignments reflect students’ new knowledge of the standard and metric measuring systems.
• ‘Exit Ticket’ requires students to ask questions about concepts they did not understand. These questions
will be used to review concepts during the Anticipatory Set of the following lesson.
