Audience Profiling
By Jake Foulkes
Demographics
For the Demographics aspect of our audience, our
group targeted the F, C2, C1 and B range.
We're tackling social issues that will really resonate
with young people, such as isolation, substance
abuse, and domestic conflict, and as such that's
our main target demographic.
Therefore, the short is really targeted at those
within the economic ranges of young people.
We're conscious that many young people in lower
social groups may not identify with the issues we
showcase as much as people in middle
class/upper-working class may identify with it, as it
showcases aspects of life they may no have
experienced or seen before. Therefore, we're
encompassing a broad range of young people in
our demographics.
Psychographics
When reviewing psychographics, our group thought it would be best to target
the reformer and the explorer groups because of the following reasons:
Reformer:
We wanted to target this group because of our subject matter, because seeking
'enlightenment' often involves diving into and learning about new topics, and
also requires a high degree of empathy. This resonates with themes at the core
of social realism. having empathy for downtrodden characters is extremely
important; it allows us to draw in an attentive audience.
Explorer:
This group is ideal for small indie films, or other short films, as mainstream
audience types are unlikely to seek out smaller productions. These are the kind
of audience members that are arguably 'film buffs'; they seek out new media
in small cinemas, support indie filmmakers, and spend free time watching
various shorts on sites like YouTube and Vimeo. This is our ideal audience
member. Also, explorers may already be interested in social issues
portrayed within film.
Who is our target Audience?
• Gender: Male (due to mainly male characters)
• Age: 15 - 24 (focusing on the issues of younger people)
• Education: College or University students. (Main characters are within
these environments)
• Occupation: Part time work, low paid work (often a large part of
some young people's lives.)
• Hobbies: Football, Video games, socialising (connecting with common
young people hobbies
Why?
We wanted to target the male demographic in order to connect our
male main characters. In fact, our main characters fit the rest of the
categories too, and as such we thought it was fit to connect each of our
target demographics interests and features to our own characters.
However, we also want to consider the informal audience. A specific
example of an informal audience may be a more mature 20-30 woman.
They may be interested in learning about the social issues of the new
generation, and as such may be a large, informal part of our audience
base.
We should look to reach both audience types.
