This document provides marketing advice in an unconventional format. It recommends being genuine and cultivating personal relationships over superficial attention-seeking. The document also emphasizes starting early to build a community and shares some tools to help with networking and community outreach.
This document provides a creative and media profile for a 14-year-old named Marie. It lists her hobbies as shopping, fashion, football, and favorite books, sports, radio stations and TV programs. It also lists some famous monuments and historical places Marie has visited in London and the UK. The second part outlines skills Marie has developed in areas like performance, art, media and design. It provides examples of how she learned each skill and outcomes or projects she created using the skills.
Visual perception labs are interested in the brains ability to use covert attention to process a visual scene. An experiment was designed with MATLAB software to look at the effect of eccentricity, or stimulus radius, on the accuracy of covert attention during a visual search task. Knowing that acuity degrades in the periphery of the retina, away from the fovea, it was hypothesized that the accuracy of covert attention will decrease with an increase in radius.
This document summarizes a study that tested how susceptible users are to entering their passwords into fake password dialog boxes created by attackers. Researchers created fake password dialogs mimicking Windows and Mac operating systems and found that 15-35% of participants entered their real passwords. While some users detected the spoofing, many were either oblivious or compromised. The researchers conclude that users have difficulty determining whether information comes from the actual OS or an attacker. Future work should focus on designing security dialogs that better capture users' attention.
Your attention please: designing security-decision UIs to make genuine risks ...Cristian Bravo-Lillo
Presented at SOUPS 2013, at Newcastle, UK.
We designed and tested attractors for computer security dialogs: user-interface modifications used to draw users’ attention to the most important information for making decisions. Some of these modifications were purely visual, while others temporarily inhibited potentially-dangerous behaviors to redirect users’ attention to salient information. We conducted three between-subjects experiments to test the effectiveness of the attractors. In the first two experiments, we sent participants to perform a task on what appeared to be a third-party site that required installation of a browser plugin. We presented them with what appeared to be an installation dialog from their operating system. Participants who saw dialogs that employed inhibitive attractors were significantly less likely than those in the control group to ignore clues that installing this software might be harmful.
In the third experiment, we attempted to habituate participants to dialogs that they knew were part of the experiment. We used attractors to highlight a field that was of no value during habituation trials and contained critical information after the habituation period. Participants exposed to inhibitive attractors were two to three times more likely to make an informed decision than those in the control condition.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

The Evolution and Impact of OTT Platforms: A Deep Dive into the Future of Ent...ABHILASH DUTTA
This presentation provides a thorough examination of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, focusing on their development and substantial influence on the entertainment industry, with a particular emphasis on the Indian market. We begin with an introduction to OTT platforms, defining them as streaming services that deliver content directly over the internet, bypassing traditional broadcast channels. These platforms offer a variety of content, including movies, TV shows, and original productions, allowing users to access content on-demand across multiple devices. The historical context covers the early days of streaming, starting with Netflix's inception in 1997 as a DVD rental service and its transition to streaming in 2007. The presentation also highlights India's television journey, from the launch of Doordarshan in 1959 to the introduction of Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television in 2000, which expanded viewing choices and set the stage for the rise of OTT platforms like Big Flix, Ditto TV, Sony LIV, Hotstar, and Netflix. The business models of OTT platforms are explored in detail. Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) models, exemplified by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, offer unlimited content access for a monthly fee. Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD) models, like iTunes and Sky Box Office, allow users to pay for individual pieces of content. Advertising-Based Video on Demand (AVOD) models, such as YouTube and Facebook Watch, provide free content supported by advertisements. Hybrid models combine elements of SVOD and AVOD, offering flexibility to cater to diverse audience preferences.
Content acquisition strategies are also discussed, highlighting the dual approach of purchasing broadcasting rights for existing films and TV shows and investing in original content production. This section underscores the importance of a robust content library in attracting and retaining subscribers. The presentation addresses the challenges faced by OTT platforms, including the unpredictability of content acquisition and audience preferences. It emphasizes the difficulty of balancing content investment with returns in a competitive market, the high costs associated with marketing, and the need for continuous innovation and adaptation to stay relevant.
The impact of OTT platforms on the Bollywood film industry is significant. The competition for viewers has led to a decrease in cinema ticket sales, affecting the revenue of Bollywood films that traditionally rely on theatrical releases. Additionally, OTT platforms now pay less for film rights due to the uncertain success of films in cinemas.
Looking ahead, the future of OTT in India appears promising. The market is expected to grow by 20% annually, reaching a value of ₹1200 billion by the end of the decade. The increasing availability of affordable smartphones and internet access will drive this growth, making OTT platforms a primary source of entertainment for many viewers.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
Organizational culture includes values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits that influence employee behaviors and how people interpret those behaviors. It is important because culture can help or hinder a company's success. Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Everyone is in agreement that ChatGPT (and other generative AI tools) will shape the future of work. Yet there is little consensus on exactly how, when, and to what extent this technology will change our world.
Businesses that extract maximum value from ChatGPT will use it as a collaborative tool for everything from brainstorming to technical maintenance.
For individuals, now is the time to pinpoint the skills the future professional will need to thrive in the AI age.
Check out this presentation to understand what ChatGPT is, how it will shape the future of work, and how you can prepare to take advantage.
The document provides career advice for getting into the tech field, including:
- Doing projects and internships in college to build a portfolio.
- Learning about different roles and technologies through industry research.
- Contributing to open source projects to build experience and network.
- Developing a personal brand through a website and social media presence.
- Networking through events, communities, and finding a mentor.
- Practicing interviews through mock interviews and whiteboarding coding questions.
Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

Buuuuuuuuuut enough about me and to the topic I want to talk to you about:How to get (the right type of) attention. It’s always hard to prepare talks thatfiteveryone and talkingaboutappmarketingwould ask not only for much more time butalso for me to preparetonsofstatistics. So I am doing back to basicsinstead. Now you probably wonder what is the right type and is there a wrong type. I guess that not everyone would agree with me but to me the right type (for an indie) is the one that gives you the must bang for the leastbuck. Or in other worlds, the most efficient way for the least amount of money. With that out of the way, let me ask you guys a question: Who here came by airplane to Malmø? Ok and who here had a crying baby on the plane? All right, you know the thing is. When it comes to traveling, especially flying, I am a freaking baby magnet. You can bet that no matter where i sit there is a crying baby either in front of me, behind me or in the aisle next to me. I just came to the conclusion that it is a law of nature. So the other day when I was on my way to a conference (and of course I had a baby crying behind me) i realized that they are a very nice metaphor for how I do approach marketing.
So voila! These are our marketing specialists for this evening. And they look as surprised as you probably just were, right? Well, like actual marketing «specialists» they do some things right but mostly they do things wrong because let’s face it, Marketing and Advertising is pretty much learning by doing and through trial and error. The baby on the plane is basically trying to get what we all want: Attention. Quite obviously it succeeds but the problem is that the most part of the people whose attention it got is annoyed about the interruption. The only people who are not annoyed are the family and people who either have babies on their own right now or generally love babies. So lets call them «friends». The main problem here is that the baby wanted attention from its family but got much more than it bargained for and in turn annoyed the most part of its audience. The ones that are annoyed basically just try to ignore it and most probably but in some earplugs to damp out the crying. This is what can happen when you try to get attention for your game too. So let’s break it down a bit and I try to give you some example of personal experience.
So what do we ultimately want? ATTENTION much like the crying baby on the plane. Buthow to getthatattention and how to getthe right kindof..
Somethingreallyimportantifyou talkaboutyour game, no matter ifyouareonsocialchannels or during conferences..be yourself and do not try to be someoneyouare not. Not only will people find out, in marketing and pr everything is about trust. Once you have lost that trust it’s incredibly hard to get it back so do not screw that part up.
Pitching is annoying, interrupts people and is not why they are listening to you are what they want to hear from you.Even worse, if they don’t know you they won’t listen to you anyway (or believe whatever you try to say and explain, no matter how important it is)Actually, forget about selling a game and instead think about it as making friends and sharing your passion when you interact and communicate.Remember the crying baby on the plane? People just ignored it because to them it was annoying, selfish and interrupted them in something they didn not want to be interrupted in, and pitching and only talking about you on social channels is annoying. Specially advertising..there is a reason I either get my ipad out, grab some food or go to the toilet during ad breaks..the same will happen on social channels if you try to get attention by only focusing on yourself. It won’t hurt if you talk about others. Specially in twitter. Retweet interesting topics from other people and get other developers attention as well. The more you give the more you get back and you will make some friends in between as well.
Family will always give you attention. Sometimes or (most of the time even more then you want) so if you are just starting out on social channels ie facebook, don’t be afraid to ask them to like it and also share it with their friends. Speaking about friends, the same is true for friends. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help. They generally have a much higher tolerance limit and they will most likely tell you of something in your update or social channel doesn’t work..
So, again, friends will have your back (unless there is a camera and an embarrassing moment involved...)Either way, my whole marketing approach is based on MAKING FRIENDS!If we get back to the baby metaphor..friends know you and what you stand for, they know for example that the baby is crying because it gets a new tooth and as an added bonus, have a higher bullshit tolerance for your quirks. If you try to build attention for your game it’s basically all about making friends (or building a community). I tend to look at it that way:AAA companies buy friends (with super expensive CG trailers, adds, expensive marketing campaigns) while we indies want to «make or get» friends. Or oneapproach is to getcustomers and theother is to get fans.I generally tend to think that the ones you do not have to pay to give you attention are the more loyalones, wouldn’tyouagreeonthat? The ones going for fancy trailers and expensive goodies will just leave you for the next best shiny thing. This is true for both building a community and also having an easier and more efficient conversation with journalists. Establishing personal contacts and makeingfriends is key.But now, how we start? Social Channels, Forums, Twitter, Facebook.
Forums: Of course a starting point for many is to create social channels but also join forums to talk about your game. After all if you have a community that fits your target audience or shares your passion you should be able to talk to them, right?Well, let me tell you a short story (MS forum story). So, my point in question, get to know people and let them know who you are first.
Also, again with the Baby. If it would have cried at home it would automatically have gotten the attention of the people it wanted it from and ONLY from them. Limiting the amount of annoyance to others to 0.This is true if you contact journalists as well. Make sure you do use the proper channels or otherwise you waste time on something that wont bring any fruition. For example, there is absolutely no real reason to send RockPaperShotgun a press release or an email with news about a mobile only or console game. Well you can try but the chance is extremely small and that time is better spent elsewhere. So take a bit of time to research and know your journalists and potential target audience. Or youcoulduseour list ofpublic media siteswe have online as a startingpoint. More onthat at the end.
Somethingelsethat I think is reallyimportant:Don’tgetdisheartenedifyou send out press-releases and don’tgetanycoverage or feedback. It’s quitehonestly a veryunthankful and frustratingjob to try to getcoverage from the media. At times it reallydoesseem like youare sending stuffinto a black hole never to be seenagain. The keyhere is to keeppersistant, especiallyuntilyou do have some personal contactsestablished.
Doessize or theamountof visitors a siteget matter in terms ofwhereyouwant to be features? One thingyouneed to keep in mind is howmuchcompetitionyougeton a specificoutlet. In general I madetheexperiencethatit’s more efficient to target small to medium sites IF you do not have yet personal contacts at anyofthebigones. Simplybecausehardlyanyofusarepros at writingcompelling press releases, catchingtitles or findthatspecial hook thejournosarelooking for. Coupledwiththefactthat journalists onbigsitesgethundredsof emails per day and need to decidewithin a fewsecondsiftheyopen an email or not, it makes it really hard to get a foodintothebigsites. It’s actuallysmarter to try to target somesmalleroutletsthatyouknowaregettingpicked up by thebigsites. Becauselet’s face it, that is howthe media works..My littleexperimentwithpixelprospector and whathappened.
It’s reallyimportant to getoutofyourcomfortzone.Leavethat basement (wellyouobviouslyalreadydidotherwiseyouwould not be here, so well done!)Establishing personal contacts and talking to people in persons is worth a million. You never knowwhathappens at conferencesPhil Fish strory and Tim Schafer Story. Youget to hang outwithamazingpeople…not to mentionafterparties is weredealsgetmade and the best contacts start.

Cultivate and Treasureyourcontacts. Onceyou do getcoverageit’salwaysnice to get back, addthe journalist in question to yourcontacts and shootthem a thankyoueitherontwitter or by email. Theymight not answerbut I am sure theyappreciate it. Who knows, theymighteventakethe time to get back to you and voila, yougotone more personal contact.Generallyagain, thatalsomeans: be a goodfriend. Don’t just thinkaboutmakingfriends in order to make friends. It’s seriously all about giving and receiving and when in doubt I alwayssay, thinkof it as giving more from your side. Retweeting and supportingotherdevelopers and appreciatingyour fans and community is oneofthe most importantmarketingtoolyoucan have. Don’twaste it..
Unfortunatelyusing forums, socialchannels and general makingfriends and networkingtakes time butit’sreallyworth it in thelong run and buildingcommunities and a networkwithimportantcontacts is a goldmine and willstaywithyou for a long time. Especiallyifyoutakethe «makingfriends» seriously. It’s a bit like carding (kinda fitting withthesnailsmetaphor right? ;). Youneed to pamper and takecareofsmall plants to have themgrowintobigtreesyoucanenjoy for a long time.
Something I getasked a lot and have a lot ofdiscussionsabout is thequestionon, howearly to start withgettingattention to your game. When it comes to building a community or getting fans for your game: Youcan’t start earlyenough. Seriously! If you start afteryour game is released, youaretoo late to the party. Createsocialchannels and talk to potential fans as early as possible. Shareyourpassion.Someofyouprobablythinknow «butwhatifsomeonesteals my idea?». I hate to burstyourbubblebut most again, like withthe baby, nooneprobablycaresaboutyour game as much as you do. Like parents, youthinkyour baby is the most precious and most beautiful under thesun. We have to learn to get over ourselves in thatregard. Also, ifsomeoneactuallymanages to copyyouridea and get it outbeforeyou, thenyousimplydid it wrong. It’s all aboutbeingthe first to themarketanyway. It’s a bit different withcontactingthe media. If theypickyou up from their side withoutanyeffort from your part, great! However, do not contactthemtooearly or youaregoing to blow all yourammunitiontooearly. A goodidea is to establishcontactwiththem as early as possiblebuton a friend and get-to-know basis and then later whenyouarecloser to release, youcan start pushing it to the media as well. You do not wantthem to gettired and you do not want to run the risk ofrunningoutofcontent to feedthem. And yup, that’s me ;)
Summary
I learnedthe most aboutwhatworks and whatdoes not work from mistakes. I thinkspeciallymarketing and trying to getattention is all about trial and error. Even thepros start multi-million dollar campaigns and fall ontheir butt..badly. Just look at someofthe PR desasters in thegamingindustry by AAA studios..sodon’t be afraid to make mistakes..
