Poseidon and Athena competed to become the patron deity of Athens. The citizens chose Athena after she offered them the olive tree. Athenians had slaves who were not paid, but the poorest citizens were given votes. Hipparchus was assassinated for abusing his power, and Solon later freed the slaves. Athens developed advanced warships called triremes.
