 Assistive technology (AT) is any tool that helps
students with disabilities do things more
quickly, easily or independently.
 Master grade-level content.
 Improve writing and organizational skills.
 Work towards grade-level reading skills.
 Improve note-taking skills.
 Allow visual and aural learning
Types of
Assistive
Technology
 Reading Fluency
 Colored overlays to improve functional
reading skills.
 Comprehension
 Audio books to boost reading comprehension.
 Using games that kids love to motivate writing.
Ex. Minecraft
 Apps on mobile devices to improve
handwriting skills and error detection.
 Color coded keyboard.
 FM Systems: miniature radio stations operating on
special frequencies. The system consists of a
transmitter microphone used by the teacher and a
receiver used by the listener. The receiver
transmits the sound to the ears or, if wearing a
hearing aid, directly to the hearing aid.
 Induction Loop Systems: work with hearing aids.
An induction loop wire is permanently and
connects to a microphone used by a speaker. The
person talking into the microphone generates a
current in the wire, which creates an
electromagnetic field in the room.
