Throughout our years of schooling, most of us have been taught many approaches to writing. Most of those approaches involve a set of “rules” to follow. In “Rigid Rules, Inflexible Plans, and the Stifling of Language,” Mike Rose discusses how some of these approaches bring students to a dead-end in their writing process (p. 793). All too often, students let the rules of writing drive their entire writing process. In other words, they let HOW THEY SHOULD write become more important than WHAT THEY COULD write.
Even more troubling is just how conflicting writing rules can be. Many students have had the experience of having one teacher say, “You should never do [X]” while another teacher says, “You should always do [X].” How are student writers supposed to determine what “rules” to follow?
In this paper, you are being asked to engage in some observational research. You are being asked to choose two “rules” or pieces of writing advice that you have found yourself struggling with in the past, and determine how your academic discourse community follows (or doesn’t seem to follow) the them.
For example, assume I am like Maria in Mike Rose’s study, and I often get hung up on “hooks.” I have read explanations like those given by the Tutoring Center at George Brown College who write on their website:
The first sentence of your introduction is the first chance a writer has to capture the attention of the reader. Some people call this a “hook” because it captures a reader’s attention with interesting statements and ideas just like a fisherman will use a shiny lure to get a fish on his or her hook.

Throughout our years of schooling, most of us have been taught many approaches to writing. Most of those approaches involve a set of “rules” to follow. In “Rigid Rules, Inflexible Plans, and the Stifling of Language,” Mike Rose discusses how some of these approaches bring students to a dead-end in their writing process (p. 793). All too often, students let the rules of writing drive their entire writing process. In other words, they let HOW THEY SHOULD write become more important than WHAT THEY COULD write.
Even more troubling is just how conflicting writing rules can be. Many students have had the experience of having one teacher say, “You should never do [X]” while another teacher says, “You should always do [X].” How are student writers supposed to determine what “rules” to follow?
In this paper, you are being asked to engage in some observational research. You are being asked to choose two “rules” or pieces of writing advice that you have found yourself struggling with in the past, and determine how your academic discourse community follows (or doesn’t seem to follow) the them.

men, and data from 805 homosexual and 1,615 heterosexual women had 91% greater odds of

atypicality has been linked to this finding, one would be gender identity disorder. In an
international survey, more than 11,000 participants, documented that 10.6% of males and 8.5%
of females are at higher rates of heft- handedness. Even though the number of theories found of
small but reliable gender differences found in handedness, the results remain poorly understood.
Prenatal Androgen Theory is the most reasonable explanation of homosexuality in
the social behavior of human genders. Stating the sexual orientation is established in the womb
during fetal development. Although with more higher androgen exposure, comes more gender
typical patterns of development, in the males case it would be a greater chance of left-
handedness. Corresponding to gender- related personality traits, within sexual orientation groups,
non- right handedness is associated with masculine traits for both sexes. Predictions have been
made based on simple linear version of prenatal hormone theory, the androgens masculinize
behavior between sex and then is compared on average (James, 1989). Consequently there has
been strong data shown the prenatal hormone theory of handedness, concluding that the non-
right-handedness occurs more in the males sex than females.

The self is a complex and marvelous participant in the social world. There are three main components of the self: self-knowledge, interpersonal self, and agent self. The self is a vital means of gaining social acceptance and for participation in culture. But is there such a thing as a "true self"?

According to recent meta-analysis, there has been an immoderate amount of
information linked between the likeliness of sexual orientation and laterality. Using one hand
more than the other. The significant data from 6,182 homosexual and 14,808 heterosexual men,
showed that homosexual men had 34% greater odds of being non-right handed than heterosexual
men, and data from 805 homosexual and 1,615 heterosexual women had 91% greater odds of
being non- right handed than heterosexual women RichardA.Lippa,Ph.D.1 Other gender-
atypicality has been linked to this finding, one would be gender identity disorder. In an
international survey, more than 11,000 participants, documented that 10.6% of males and 8.5%
of females are at higher rates of heft- handedness. Even though the number of theories found of
small but reliable gender differences found in handedness, the results remain poorly understood.
Prenatal Androgen Theory is the most reasonable explanation of homosexuality in
the social behavior of human genders. Stating the sexual orientation is established in the womb
during fetal development. Although with more higher androgen exposure, comes more gender
typical patterns of development, in the males case it would be a greater chance of left-
handedness. Corresponding to gender- related personality traits, within sexual orientation groups,
non- right handedness is associated with masculine traits for both sexes. Predictions have been
made based on simple linear version of prenatal hormone theory, the androgens masculinize
behavior between sex and then is compared on average (James, 1989). Consequently there has
been strong data shown the prenatal hormone theory of handedness, concluding that the non-
right-handedness occurs more in the males sex than females.

The theory that I have selected is the social learning theory. Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda (2012) stated that “
social learning theory
is the school of behavioral thought that has best combined internal and external processes” (pg 351). This theory is based on how individuals adapt and adopt to different environments base of their behavior and cultural norm. Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda (2012) stated that social learning theory offers a synthesis of cognitive psychology and principles of behavior modification in addition to an analysis of social influence on development. The population I would use with this theory is young children. Younger children from the ages of 3 to 5 because children learn how to adapt to different things or environment based on learn behaviors from adults.

Using this theory could contribute to the social work practice with the populations of younger children due to understanding why a child act a certain way around their mother or father. With the social learning theory a bobo doll experiment was use to see gain understanding of the fears and anxiety of the child. Using this in the social work practice would help me as a social worker to be able to communicate with the child non-verbally because non verbal communication is how younger children communicate. The social learning theory would help me understand what behavior the parent uses around the child that causes the child to show fear. CONTEXT
Prejudice occurs all over the world, often contributing to violence, oppression, and other forms of harm. What are the distinctions between stereotypes, discrimination, and prejudice? When do stereotypes become prejudices? Racism and sexism occur across races, ages, genders, religions, physical appearances, sexual orientations, and so on. Prejudice creates emotional, physical, and economic harm to individuals, groups, and society as a whole. But what factors create prejudice, and how can prejudice be reduced? What role do media play in both maximizing and minimizing stereotypes and prejudices? By examining how prejudices are cultivated and the damage they cause, we can begin to see how we might overcome and prevent prejudice.

Attitudes help guide behavior, although sometimes people act in ways that contradict their attitudes (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014). Some have said that attitudes are directly related to behavior; others say there is no strong relationship between attitude and behavior. Examining theories of how people develop attitudes and perceptions can lead to heightened self-awareness.
CONTEXT
The self is a complex and marvelous participant in the social world. There are three main components of the self: self-knowledge, interpersonal self, and agent self. The self is a vital means of gaining social acceptance and for participation in culture. But is there such a thing as a "true self"?

In this project you are asked to conduct your own research into two variables that interest you. Mandy is a 3-year-old preschool student who has been diagnosed with ASD and is nonverbal. She is sensitive to loud noises and certain textures. She was recently referred to a child study team by the family physician. Her family doctor described her as having low muscle tone, delayed communication, and delayed motor skills. She uses her behavior and physicality for communicating needs. Mandy does point and reach for desired items, but she has not been able to reproduce any signs, despite her parents' attempts to teach her sign language for the past year. She often appears to be disengaged when playing or when her parents are encouraging her to sign. Her eye contact is minimal, tantrums are common, crying happens daily, and change is very difficult for her.
Case Study 2: Wilson
Wilson is an 11-year-old boy who was diagnosed with ASD as a toddler. He is physically healthy, but he is very sensitive to hot, cold, noises, and pain. He does not like crowds or lines and struggles with class assemblies, lunch time periods, and recesses. He is in a self-contained special education classroom on a public school campus and attends general education class for music only. He is capable of doing some general education class work, but his behavior is far too unpredictable to make further placement in a general education classroom feasible at this time. He can be impulsive and destructive when frustrated or overwhelmed. He is quite social and enjoys interacting with his peers in both settings; however, it can be difficult to discern when he will have a meltdown. He has tantrums and destroys property, and his participation in some aspects of school is limited. When changes in the schedule occur, such as school assemblies or fire drills, Wilson has a hard time adjusting and oftentimes tips over desks or kicks. He has not been able to attend the last two field trips due to his parents’ concerns for his safety.
Case Study 3: Cole
Cole is a 16-year-old boy with ASD and cognitive delays. He was born three weeks premature and required intensive neonatal care for six weeks after birth, but he is currently in good health. He passed all hearing and vision screenings. Cole uses gestures and a few verbal words to express his needs and wants; for example yes/no and hungry. He uses a few sign language gestures and some picture symbols, but mostly relies on a communication device in order to communicate with teachers, peers, and parents.

Specifically, you will look at Skinner’s behavioral perspective on personality development and discuss how that theory can play a role in this issue of unhealthy groups. Bob is an adolescent who grew up in a gang-infested part of a large city. His parents provided little supervision while he was growing up and left Bob mostly on his own. He developed friendships with several kids in his neighborhood who were involved in gangs, and eventually joined a gang himself. Now crime and gang activities are a way of life for Bob. These have become his way to identify with his peer group and to support himself. It is relatively easy to see that Bob’s environment has played a large role in his current lifestyle. This coincides with Skinner’s concept of environment being the sole determinant of how personality develops. Skinner believed that if you change someone’s environment and the reinforcements in that environment, you can change their behavior. Use the Internet, Argosy University library resources, and your textbook to research Skinner’s concept of the environment and answer the following questions: · If you were to create an environment for Bob to change his behavior from that of a gang member to a respectable and law- abiding citizen, what types of environmental changes and positive reinforcements would you suggest and why? · What are some interventions that are used in the field currently? Are there any evidence-based programs that use these environmental and reinforcement interventions? Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
