‘What will a research proposal
contain and what should it look like?’
First of all, it is important that you
are passionate about the research
topic, have a vested interest in it, and
that it will add to the profession’s
body of scientifi c knowledge.
Discuss your idea with an
experienced researcher too, prior
to starting your proposal.
Th e proposals must be succinctly
written and clearly chronicle facts,
it must craft a convincing line of
reasoning and an argument for study
approval (Marshall, 2012).
Ask the questions:
1. What is the research about?
2. Why is it important?
3. What is the process that will be
taken to accomplish project goals
and objectives?
4. What will the project cost?

Simple steps to follow:
1 Read the criteria for your proposal
If a format for writing is
given, use it. Check grammar, word
count and remember format and
brevity are important (12-point font,
legible and with a generous margin
will make the proposal easier to
read and comment on) to keep the
reviewer more engaged. Find a peer
or colleague to proofread the proposal
before submission, they may fi nd a
fl aw that you have overlooked. Submit
on time, or the work may be declined.

With the support of Jim Rugh, author of ‘Real World Evaluation’, 4th Wheel Social Impact organised a one day workshop on Real World Evaluation to spread this approach among personnel involved in designing, implementing, monitoring, documenting and evaluating social programs in India.

The overall project involves two parts: the advocacy action plan paper and a presentation. The paper is your Learning Outcomes Plan.
Advocacy is the act of standing up for others, of building connections, of engaging in everyday acts. These activities might occur in daily connections or on a grand stage and serve to support children, families, and professionals connected to the field. Leading through advocacy has the capacity to impact others in the present, and in a wonderful rippling effect, for many years to come.
In completing this plan you will:
Apply leadership and advocacy skills to implement and manage strategic change
Evaluate local and global policy and policy development related to specific issues in early childhood
Evaluate cultural influences on local and global policy in early childhood (especially through the lenses of stakeholders and collaborating organizations)
Demonstrate evidence-based decision making, integrating principles of equity, ethics, and social justice and advocacy

QUANTITATIVE STUDIES
Now that you have gone through all the chapters that constitute Step I of the research process, this exercise provides you with an opportunity to apply that knowledge to formulate a research problem that is of interest to you. As you know, selecting a research problem is one of the most important aspects of social research, so this exercise will, therefore, help you in formulating your research problem by raising questions and issues that will guide you to examine critically various facets and implications of what you are proposing to study. The exercise is designed to provide a directional framework that guides you through the problem formulation path. Keep in mind that the questions and issues raised in this exercise are not prescriptive but indicative and directional; hence you need to be critical and innovative while working through them. Thinking through a research problem with care can prevent a tremendous wastage of human and financial resources.
A research problem should be clearly stated and be specific in nature. The feasibility of the study in terms of the availability of technical expertise, finances, and time, and in terms of its relevance, should be considered thoroughly at the problem-formulation stage. In studies that attempt to establish a causal relationship or an association, the accuracy of the measurement of independent (cause) and dependent (effect) variables is of crucial importance and, hence, should be given serious consideration. Assignment 2: Evidence Based Practice at Good Seed Drop-In According to the Council on Social Work Education, Competency 4: Engage In Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice: Social workers understand quantitative and qualitative research methods and their respective roles in advancing a science of social work and in evaluating their practice. Social workers know the principles of logic, scientific inquiry, and culturally informed and ethical approaches to building knowledge. Social workers understand that evidence that informs practice derives from multi-disciplinary sources and multiple ways of knowing. They also understand the processes for translating research findings into effective practice. Social workers: Use practice experience and theory to inform scientific inquiry and research; Apply critical thinking to engage in analysis of quantitative and qualitative research methods and research findings; and Use and translate research evidence to inform and improve practice, policy, and service delivery. This assignment is intended to help students demonstrate the behavioral components of this competency in their field education.
- 2. To Prepare: Meet with your Field Instructor. During the meeting, you are expected to assess the population(s) served by the agency. After meeting with the Field Instructor, conduct extensive research regarding the agency’s client population. You will be expected to use at least 5 peer-reviewed resources. The purpose of the research is to discover “evidenced based practices” that are most effective while working with clients served within the population. If the agency serves more than one population, select one sub-population within the agency to conduct the review. (Homeless youth from 18-25 years-old, Population Served Transition Aged Youth or "TAY") The Assignment: Create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint Presentation, where you will explain the following: 1. Population researched 2. Best evidenced based practices modalities used to engage the population 3. Current modalities used in the agency 4. Briefly discuss and suggest to methods of implementing evidence-based practices in the agency 5. Analyze the findings from the articles you researched Note: You are expected to use a minimum of five references. Assignment 2: Evidence Based
