Assignment 2: Discussion—Risk Factors and Protective Factors
Research studies have determined many risk factors that can lead to the development of mental health issues and mental illness. These include, but are not limited to, exposure to violence, parental divorce, poverty, genetic predisposition, and dysfunctional parenting. At the same time, there have been children who faced many of these risk factors and overcame them. These children are referred as
resilient
, and researchers have been eager to determine how they were able to thrive under circumstances that undo other children.

Wes Moore, the author of the book
The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates
, was surprised when one day, the police approached him for a crime he did not commit. During the investigation, he came to know of another man who had the same name—Wes Moore. The shared name was not the only coincidence: they had both grown up in the same neighborhood at about the same time. Yet, one Wes Moore went on to become a Rhodes scholar, earn honors in the military, work at the White House, and become a leader in the business community; while the other Wes Moore was sentenced to life in prison. The descriptions of the lives of both Wes Moores are illustrative of the power of heredity and environment in the shaping of a person.
As boys, both Wes Moores grew up in poor, single-parent homes and did not apply themselves in primary and secondary school. The author’s father, a newscaster, died when the author was three years old. He and his two sisters were raised by his widowed mother. Before he was a teen, he became disillusioned with school and began getting into trouble in his neighborhood, even having brushes with the law for petty crimes. His mother decided to send him to military school, but he ran away five times before finally giving the school a chance. Once he decided to stay, he gained a strong sense of purpose and developed a strong work ethic.
Meanwhile, the other Wes Moore, who lived in the same area of Baltimore, was about the same age, and was also being raised by a single mother. He was arrested and convicted for first-degree murder of a police officer during a jewelry store robbery. He is serving a life prison sentence.
Important differences between the childhoods of the two boys are notable. The author had two college-educated parents. His father chose to stay with the family, but died at a relatively young age.
Traditionally, mental illness was considered a biological problem, e.docxdepoerossie
Traditionally, mental illness was considered a biological problem, either inherited or developed due to genetic vulnerability within the individual. This point of view is termed the medical model. Treatment was provided to the individual in one-to-one meetings with a psychiatrist or sessions with a psychotherapist.
The field of mental health has evolved from the traditional model to one incorporating many more people, factors, causes, and types of treatment. The biopsychosocial-cultural model incorporates biological, psychological, developmental, familial, social, and cultural factors to understand how mental illness develops and how to design effective treatments.

Eventually, she became overwhelmed and was unable to provide the kind of structure the author received. As a result, the other Wes Moore was unsupervised much of the time. He began using and selling drugs, later resorting to more serious crimes, like robbery, for money. It was during a robbery that he shot and killed a police officer—a crime that put him in prison for life.

Question 1Prior to engaging in this discussion, read Chapters 7 .docxJUST36
Question 1
Prior to engaging in this discussion, read Chapters 7 and 8 in your text as well as the articles by Clark, et al. (2013) and Cummins (2013). It is highly recommended that you also watch one or two of the videos on mental illness from the TED playlist,
All kinds of minds (9 talks),
as these provide valuable insights into a variety of disorders and the issues associated with them.
For this discussion, refer to the information in the
“Introduction to the Miller Family document
.” Lucy Miller is a 20-year-old college student who has recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Sarah Miller, her mother, recalls that as a teen, Lucy would get very talkative at night and couldn’t go to sleep. Sarah also recalled that Lucy was kicked off the cheerleading squad when her GPA fell below 3.0, and that during this time, Lucy’s friends were being mean to her. When this occurred, Lucy was “really down” for a couple of months. She didn’t want to talk to a counselor and she told her mother Sarah that she would be fine. Lucy blamed the entire situation on the issues with the girls in her class. However, coping with the mood swings became increasingly difficult for her. Lucy began experimenting casually with illegal drugs and found that they helped. Unfortunately, she kept getting them from friends at school and has now become addicted to them.
Examine the potential biological basis for Lucy’s psychological disorder. What, if anything, in her family history might point to this issue being hereditary? Be sure to apply basic medical terminology where appropriate. Consider the biases that are often held regarding mental illness. How much volition is involved in mental illness? How much is related to environment and genetics? Do we think about mental illness differently when we know the person well versus if the person is a stranger (e.g., a homeless individual or a panhandler on the street)? Analyze the impact that our stage of lifespan development has on how we think of our own mental health and the mental health of others. What impact does it have on our associated behaviors and the long-term outcomes associated with the disorder?

In contrast to both the often dark, subconscious emphasis of the psychodynamic theorists and the somewhat cold, calculated perspectives of behavioral/cognitive theorists, the humanistic psychologists focus on each individual’s potential for personal growth and self-actualization. Carl Rogers was influenced by strong religious experiences (both in America and in China) and his early clinical career in a children’s hospital. Consequently, he developed his therapeutic techniques and the accompanying theory in accordance with a positive and hopeful perspective. Rogers also focused on the unique characteristics and viewpoint of individuals.
Abraham Maslow is best known for his extensive studies on the most salient feature of the humanistic perspective: self-actualization. He is also the one who referred to humanistic psychology as the third force, after the psychodynamic and behavioral/cognitive perspectives, and he specifically addressed the need for psychology to move beyond its study of unhealthy individuals. He was also interested in the psychology of the work place, and his recognition in the business field has perhaps made him the most famous psychologist.
Henry Murray was an enigmatic figure, who seemingly failed to properly acknowledge the woman who inspired much of his work, and who believed his life had been something of a failure. Perhaps he felt remorse as a result of maintaining an extramarital affair with the aforementioned woman, thanks in large part to the advice and help of Carl Jung! Murray extended a primarily psychodynamic perspective to the study of human needs in normal individuals. His Thematic Apperception Test was one of the first psychological tests applied outside of a therapeutic setting, and it provided the basis for studying the need for achievement (something akin to a learned form of self-actualization).
Carl Rogers and Humanistic Psychology
Carl Rogers is the psychologist many people associate first with humanistic psychology, but he did not establish the field in the way that Freud established psychoanalysis. A few years older than Abraham Maslow, and having moved into clinical practice more directly, Rogers felt a need to develop a new theoretical perspective that fit with his clinical observations and personal beliefs. Thus, he was proposing a humanistic approach to psychology and, more specifically, psychotherapy before Maslow. It was Maslow, however, who used the term humanistic psychology as a direct contrast to behaviorism and psychoanalysis. And it was Maslow who contacted some friends,.

Officer Johnson has been closely studying the family we have bee.docxpoulterbarbara
Officer Johnson has been closely studying the family we have been following throughout this course. He mentioned in his report that Rob and Junior were managing the drug-based business. Mary was managing prostitution. Junior was working with some of his friends on a new capper. One of Junior's friends was stealing computers from his employer and selling them on the Internet. Officer Johnson is also helping Lucy cope with sexual assault by her father, Rob. She was forced by her parents to get involved in prostitution. She is a minor and a victim of child abuse.
Having reached the conclusion of this course, you have seen how a normal Centervale family became involved in criminal activity. Through the previous modules, you have seen how the criminal element is transferred from the parents to the children and the affect this has on various lives in the family unit. You will now evaluate both sides of the issues in this case; from the prosecution's perspective and defense's perspective taking the following into account:
Family pressure to act a certain way for acceptance
Possible defenses that could be given
Sentencing possibilities for the various crimes you have studied
Please consider how the events of this Centervale story play out from the standpoint of the prosecution and the defense. You are to review all modules to complete this discussion.
In a minimum of 300 words, post your responses to the following to the
Discussion Area
:
What were the considerations for the family to enter a life of crime?
How did involvement in crime affect interactions among the members of the family?
What was the impact of the parents' behaviors on other family members and the long-term effects on each of the parties?
What are the various defenses that might be raised for Rob, Mary, and Junior and why?
What are the potential sentencing options for the three members of the family, Rob, Mary, and Junior, and why are these sentences justifiable?
Critically analyze the working of the American criminal justice system and suggest ways to improve it so that scenarios as given in this course can be prevented.

Assignment 2 Exploring the Art of Indigenous Cultures Part 1All .docxannrodgerson
Assignment 2: Exploring the Art of Indigenous Cultures: Part 1
All of the indigenous cultures that we have explored this week were at one time “discovered” by European explorers who often collected traditional art objects to take back with them to Europe as “curiosities.” These
objets d’art
inspired collectors and artists alike and opened the Western world up to new ideas, new cultures, and new art forms.
This is Part 1 of a two-part assignment and spans
Weeks 3 and 4
. Imagine that you are one of these intrepid European explorers who has set out to discover and collect the traditional art forms created by the four cultures we have learned about this week:
India
China
Korea
Japan
As you “travel” and collect two works from each of your four cultures, you need to document some important field notes that will help you to explain what these treasures are upon your return home. These field notes need to include for each work of art:
Name of the culture that produced the object
Title or name of the object
Date of the object
Medium/materials used to create the object
Current location
Assignment Instructions
Using the textbook and Internet sources, locate 2 traditional works of art from India, China, Japan, and Korea. Copy and paste the 8 objects into your Microsoft Word document and label each one:
Name of the culture that produced the object
Title of the work
Date of the work
Medium/materials used to create the work
Current location
Offer a citation of your sources for each image and the information you found in the textbook and on the Internet.
Use your textbook to find out as much as you can about cultural context for each object. Go online and find some reference sources to provide you with more information.
Thoroughly explain and analyze:
What each object is
How you think your European friends back home will react to each object, and why
Why it is culturally important

Assignment 2 Ethical (Moral) RelativismIn America, many are comfo.docxannrodgerson
Assignment 2: Ethical (Moral) Relativism
In America, many are comfortable describing ethics as follows: “Well, what’s right for me is right for me and what’s right for you is right for you. Let’s just agree to disagree.” This is an affirmation of what philosophers call
individual
or
subjective moral relativism
. In this understanding of relativism, morality is a matter of individual feelings and personal preference. In individual moral relativism, the determination of what is right and wrong in a situation varies according to the individual. Moral relativists do not believe in natural law or universal truths.
Cultural moral relativism
puts culture at the forefront of relative ethical decision-making. It says the individual must include the precepts of his or her culture as a prominent part of the relativistic moral action.
Lawrence
Kohlberg,
a prominent psychologist known for recognizing moral stages of development, takes it a step farther saying cultural relativists are persons stuck in the “
Conventional
Stage” of ethical development
.
In your paper, please define individual moral relativism and cultural moral relativism in detail, noting how they differ from each other, their strengths and weaknesses, and give your position on Kohlberg’s stance on ethical relativism.
What aspects of ethical relativism do you identify and agree with? What aspects do you disagree with? Give a personal example that illustrates your stance on ethical relativism, describing how you made a moral decision in an ethical dilemma. Include at least two references to support your thoughts.

There are numerous theories that attempt to explain the development and manifestation of psychological disorders. Some researchers hold that certain disorders result from learned behaviors (behavioral theory), while other researchers believe that there is a genetic or biological basis to psychological disorders (medical model), while still others hold that psychological disorders stem from unresolved unconscious conflict (psychoanalytic theory). How would each of these theoretical viewpoints explain anxiety disorders? Does one explain the development and manifestation of anxiety disorders better than the others?

Assignment 2 is divided into two documents: Assignment 2 Theory (50% of the assignment grade) and Assignment 2 Hands-on (50% of the assignment grade).
Most requirements of this assignment will require you to research answers from your text book (you must read the text book to get some answers), from the Internet, or any other reasonable source. Many Internet sources, video links, text book and Blackboard presentation reference are provided to help you START your research. I have found that any single Internet source is very incomplete and the format may not conducive for most answers required. Some students do not READ the text book or review the Power Point presentation provided to you in Blackboard.
Some answers are only available from my power point presentations or update notes.
You may cut-and-paste answers whenever appropriate, you should take care to synthesize your answers to include multiple sources. I would be impressed that you consult a Google image search and paste and
appropriate
image to supplement your answer.
While I permit cut-and-paste, I do expect you use your own words so that you:
1. Organize the answer
2. Demonstrate that you have read what you have cut-and-pasted
3. Use any means that clearly displays that you have gained knowledge.
If you are LEARNING the subject matter there should be no problem. If you cut-and-paste and pray that it might answer the question you will be penalized. I hate irrelevant cut-and-paste BS.

Assignment 2 Demographic TransitionsDemographic transition is the.docxannrodgerson
Assignment 2: Demographic Transitions
Demographic transition is the process in which a nation transitions from being a less industrialized society, with high birth and death rates, to an industrialized nation, with lower birth and death rates. Many countries have already been through this transition including the United States, England, and Canada.
The demographic transition to an industrialized society is detrimental for the environment because industrialized societies tend to use up nonrenewable resources and give off pollution. Industrialized nations have the largest ecological and carbon footprint relative to developing or nonindustrialized countries. Fortunately, there are some benefits to the process of demographic transition, including lower birth and death rates. Essentially, people in industrialized countries have fewer children and this in turn helps control the overall population size.
Demographic transition involves the following five stages:
Stage 1
High birth rate, high death rate, low population size
Stage 2
High birth rate, decreasing death rate, increasing population size
Stage 3
Decreasing birth rate, decreasing death rate, increasing population size
Stage 4
Low birth rate, low death rate, high population size
Stage 5
Low birth rate, low death rate, population size decreasing
It should be noted that stage 5 is controversial, and it is sometimes not considered to be a stage. This is partially because so few countries are at this stage.
The following graph depicts the various stages of demographic transition:
Using the stages listed above, create a demographic and environmental timeline for one industrialized country, excluding the United States. The following are a few suggested industrialized nations:
Canada
England
Germany
Russia
Italy
You can
download
the Demographic and Environmental Timeline—United States of America to review an example of such a timeline.
Include the following points in your timeline in order to examine the advantages and drawbacks of demographic transition in your selected country:
Major historical changes that caused the shift from one stage to another (if available).
Changing population size through time (increasing or decreasing).
Increase or decrease of birth and death rates through time—particularly when considering the process of industrialization.
Environmental impact of this transition.
Dates (if available), series of events, and scholarly references for these items.
Support your timeline with appropriate examples and a minimum of three credible resources.
Present your timeline in a media that best displays the information you researched. This can be in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc, LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.xls, or LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.ppt.

Assignment 2: Current Events and U.S. Diplomacy
This paper will be a revised and expanded version of the first research paper. Based on your instructor’s feedback, you will first revise the first paper.
Write three-to-four (3-4) new pages that address the following:
Define presidential doctrine and summarize the regional or global events during the Cold War leading up to the formation of the presidential doctrine you wrote about in Assignment 1.
Select one country you wrote about in Assignment 1 and describe the Cold War relationship that existed between the country you selected and the U.S. before the presidential doctrine was announced.
Describe the relationship that currently exists between the U.S. and the country you selected in section (2) above.
Describe the effect that the presidential doctrine has had on regional or global affairs since it was announced during the Cold War.
Assess whether or not the presidential doctrine you wrote about in Assignment 1 doctrine had had the intended effect of altering the behavior of the country you selected in section (2) above since the doctrine was first announced.
Use at least four (4) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.
To help you understand this assignment further, the following description and examples may be useful.
Step 1:
Define doctrine and identify why a president would want to announce one.
A doctrine is an ideological platform that a president uses to advance a policy towards a country or region in order to accomplish foreign policy goals for the United States, so you will need to expand on this theme.
Refer back to Assignment 1, and build on whatever doctrine you wrote about then. Say, for example, you selected the Truman Doctrine. Therefore, this is the only thing you will write about in Assignment 2 step 1.
Step 2:
Select one country you wrote about in Assignment 1 and describe the Cold War relationship that existed between it and the U.S.
Before the presidential doctrine was announced. In the case of Truman, you would pick either the Soviet Union, Greece, or Iran, since all three were affected by his doctrine. If you are writing about the Eisenhower Doctrine, you would choose Lebanon or Egypt; if you wrote about the Kennedy Doctrine, you would have write about Cuba or Vietnam; if your wrote about the Nixon Doctrine, you would choose either Vietnam, Saudi Arabia or Iran; if you chose Carter, you would select either Iran or Afghanistan; and if you wrote about the Reagan Doctrine, you would select Nicaragua, Angola, Russia or Afghanistan (although there were several others).
Step 3:
Describe what effect the presidential doctrine you chose has had on regional or global affairs since it was announced during the Cold War.
That is, how did the doctrine change the status quo regionally or globally after it was announced by the U.S.? What happened in Western Europe after the Truman.
Assignment 2 CybersecurityWe use computers and electronic systems.docxannrodgerson
Assignment 2: Cybersecurity
We use computers and electronic systems to run and store just about everything. Personal computers and the Internet are now included as part of the Department of Homeland Security's cybersecurity issues.
Cybersecurity involves protecting the information by preventing, detecting, and responding to attacks on information that is housed in technology.
There are many levels of risks in cybersecurity, some more serious and damaging than others. Among these dangers are:
Viruses erasing the entire system.
Individuals breaking into personal computer systems and altering the systems' files.
Individuals using personal computers to attack others' computer systems.
Individuals stealing credit card information and making unauthorized purchases.
Unfortunately, there is no 100% guarantee that even with the best precautions some of these things won't happen. Risk reduction steps exist to minimize vulnerability to information.
Tasks:
Create a PowerPoint Presentation containing 6–8 slides to address the following:
Analyze and discuss the vulnerabilities and recommend what security management can do to minimize the potential of a government or private organization being at risk for cybersecurity damage.
Outline the steps you recommend and identify any impediments to successfully implementing the suggested cybersecurity program.
Support your presentation with at least three outside scholarly resources using APA in-text citations. Add detailed speaker notes for each of the slides.

Assignment 2 Controversy Surrounding the Patriot ActThe USA Patri.docxannrodgerson
Assignment 2: Controversy Surrounding the Patriot Act
The USA Patriot Act was created to protect the United States against terrorism. The USA Patriot Act is an extensive piece of legislation that includes amendments to many other laws. The act has proved to be controversial because of the way it was introduced after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S. Since Congress at that time was extremely receptive to increasing law enforcement capabilities to fight terrorism, it passed the Patriot Act with virtually no debate.
One of the controversial sections of the act extends the capabilities of law enforcement to searching and wiretapping and includes provisions for gag orders. While conducting a search, the law enforcement officials are provided the authority to curtail certain rights of the subject of the search.
Also, the law enforcement authorities may not disclose any information to the media or other authorities while conducting the search. The investment of such powers to law enforcement authorities has been praised by some and criticized by others.
For more information on the USA Patriot Act review the website

Assignment 2 Communicating Bad News Leaders and managers often ha.docxannrodgerson
Assignment 2: Communicating Bad News
Leaders and managers often have to deliver unpleasant or difficult information to other employees or other internal or external stakeholders. How well this news is delivered can affect employee relations as well as public perceptions.
Review the following scenario:
A new company claims it manufactures the best dog food in the market. It employs around 250 people worldwide. After six months in business, one of the company’s brands is found to contain harmful bacteria. Overnight, reports start pouring in from all over the country about pets falling sick, some critically. The company wants to communicate with its stakeholders through a memo before major news channels start to cover the disease.
Assume that you are an assistant to the company’s chairperson. Based on your analysis of the scenario and using the tips you learned in this module, draft two memos for the chairperson. One memo should address the board of directors and the other the company’s employees.
Make assumptions about whether it is the food product that has bacteria or if there is another explanation for the pets’ sickness.
Write a 1–2-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
Assignment 2 Discussion—Risk Factors and Protective FactorsResear.docx
1. Assignment 2: Discussion—Risk Factors and Protective Factors
Research studies have determined many risk factors that can
lead to the development of mental health issues and mental
illness. These include, but are not limited to, exposure to
violence, parental divorce, poverty, genetic predisposition, and
dysfunctional parenting. At the same time, there have been
children who faced many of these risk factors and overcame
them. These children are referred as
resilient
, and researchers have been eager to determine how they were
able to thrive under circumstances that undo other children.

The following is a synopsis of the book by the publisher:
Wes Moore, the author of the book
The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates
, was surprised when one day, the police approached him for a
crime he did not commit. During the investigation, he came to
know of another man who had the same name—Wes Moore. The
shared name was not the only coincidence: they had both grown
up in the same neighborhood at about the same time. Yet, one
Wes Moore went on to become a Rhodes scholar, earn honors in
the military, work at the White House, and become a leader in
the business community; while the other Wes Moore was
sentenced to life in prison. The descriptions of the lives of both
Wes Moores are illustrative of the power of heredity and
2. environment in the shaping of a person.
As boys, both Wes Moores grew up in poor, single-parent
homes and did not apply themselves in primary and secondary
school. The author’s father, a newscaster, died when the author
was three years old. He and his two sisters were raised by his
widowed mother. Before he was a teen, he became disillusioned
with school and began getting into trouble in his neighborhood,
even having brushes with the law for petty crimes. His mother
decided to send him to military school, but he ran away five
times before finally giving the school a chance. Once he
decided to stay, he gained a strong sense of purpose and
developed a strong work ethic.
Meanwhile, the other Wes Moore, who lived in the same area of
Baltimore, was about the same age, and was also being raised
by a single mother. He was arrested and convicted for first-
degree murder of a police officer during a jewelry store
robbery. He is serving a life prison sentence.
Important differences between the childhoods of the two boys
are notable. The author had two college-educated parents. His
father chose to stay with the family, but died at a relatively
young age. He was relatively closely supervised. He, his
siblings, and his mother lived with his grandparents after his
father died. The author’s mother took extreme steps to try to
turn him around. She moved several times to try to find safer
neighborhoods. She sent him to military school when he
exhibited troublesome behavior.
The other Wes Moore’s father was never a part of his life,
choosing to abandon the family before his birth. His mother had
been accepted to college, but federal budget cuts resulted in the
loss of her Pell Grant. She had to abandon her goal of a college
education and instead, had to work three jobs to care for her
family. Eventually, she became overwhelmed and was unable to
provide the kind of structure the author received. As a result,
the other Wes Moore was unsupervised much of the time. He
began using and selling drugs, later resorting to more serious
crimes, like robbery, for money. It was during a robbery that he
3. shot and killed a police officer—a crime that put him in prison
for life.
Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library
resources, the Internet, and the PBS Web resource, respond to
the following:
Analyze why the author became successful, while the other Wes
Moore did not.
Evaluate the risk factors faced by each. (Explain at least three.)
Evaluate the protective factors that helped the author to be
resilient, despite difficult circumstances. (Explain at least
three.)
Provide an analysis of recent research on resilience in children
and adolescents and about how these children overcome such
difficult early experiences.
Write your initial response in 350–500 words. Apply APA
standards to citation of sources, including in-text citations and
full references. Incorporate information from at least two
academic sources to support your statements or ideas. Academic
sources could include your textbook, required readings for this
week, or academic journal articles found in the AU online
library.
