Early morning, ears are ringing and I can hear the slurred conversation of fans as I walk through the
dark corridoors of Alexandra Palace. As I enter a small room I can just about make out two distant
figures through the dense smoke, but then I hear the strum of a broken guitar and the infamous
laughter of Danni Heslin, and then I know that Modern Maps are back, and this time in a better place
than they ever were before. I sit down on a crooked stool, suddenly overcome with a wave of nerves
and innocence, opposite the torn sofa where the women are sitting, intoxicated sweaty, red faced yet
radiating pride and energy after their greatly anticipated comeback gig.
Modern Maps have been through an unbelieveable amount over the years and because of that have a
reckless reputaton and an ambience of mystery surrounding everything they do like smoke. “I hate
being the first one to speak at these things!” guitarist Ana laughs as she takes a huge drink of her what
looks like disgusting beer and pulls a face “urgh I don’t even know why I still drink this shit!” She
Grimaces. They don’t need to say it because their faces show how proud the women are of what they
have just achieved regarding their successful comback gig and they have no opened the door to
something better than ever.
“We did it” exclaims Danni Heslin, “we can laugh at the critics who once laughed at us.” Ana chimes
in, “I remeber a guy once said we would never be more than dingey bars and the drugs” she goes queit
for a second, the girls squeeze each others hands- friends as ever. “You can’t blame him for saying it,”
she continues, “but it still hurt to hear. I was mad at the time but looking back, maybe it was the wake
up call we needed to sort ourselves out and find our way back on track; we were really lost for a
while” The woman arent afraid to admit the truth, they know it better than anoyone however
admidtting it doesn’t mean they want to dwell on it.
“anyway, enough of the past, we’re back now and this time it’s different. We’re clean, healthy and
already working on new music!” We’re hugely thankful to everyone who stuck around even when we
had given up on ourselves.
Modern Maps had there ups and downs and on more occasiona than one is seemed impossible that
theyd ever return. But now they’re back and better than ever so make sure you pick up “Fumigate The
Demons” on march 16th.
