Artemisia Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque painter born in Rome in 1593. She was heavily influenced by Caravaggio's style as she learned painting in her father Orazio's workshop. At age 17, she produced her first major work "Susanna and the Elders". In 1612, she was raped by her tutor Agostino Tassi during a private lesson. This led to a highly publicized trial where she was tortured. After the trial, she married Pierantonio Stiattesi and moved with him to Florence where she had a successful career receiving commissions from the Medici family.
