H.T.S:-
• INTRODUCTION
• HISTORY
• PROCEDURE OF THE SURGERY
• SCIENCE FICTION TO REALITY
• IS THINKING POSSIBLE WITHOUT
BRAIN ?
• WHO IS THINKING ?
• CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION:-
• A head transplantation surgery is an
operation which involves the grafting of
one organism's head on to the body of
another .It has successfully performed on
animals but their is no human known to
have undergone the procedure.
This surgery is the first human head
transplant surgery which carries about 36
hrs and more than 100 specialist doctors
involved in the surgery.
HISTORY:-
• In 1908,may 21, Dr. Charles Claude
Guthrie was first to perform head
transplantation on dog .
• In 1950 at sovient union ,Dr.vladhimir
Demikhov also performed surgery on a
dog which died in to days due to Immue
reactions.
• In 1959 china announced they had
succeeded in transplanting lead of a dog
to the body in second time.
• In 1996 Dr.vladhimir Demikhov again did the
surgery on a monkey.
• In 2002 in japan Dr. white made this surgery on
a rat.
• Recently Dr.Jiya voping of china made on 1000
rats.
Now, both Dr.Jiyavoping &Dr.sergio
canavero were trying to do the first human head
transplant surgery on a Russian computer
programmer "valery spiridonov"who is suffering
with werding-Hoffmann disease.
PROCEDURE FOR THE SURGERY:-
• Temperature below-20 Degrees
• Removing the heads from the bodies a part .
• Attaching head with polieathileen Glycal.
• Attaching the vertebral arteries and carotids to
head and body.
• patient was sent to the coma artificially for 4
weeks.
• meanwhile patient was given several shock
treatments.
• patient was given with the medicines and the
counseling by the surgeons.
SCIENCE FICTION TO REALITY:-
There are some science fiction and culture
influence on this surgery.some of them are:-
• 1972- "The things with two heads"movie
featured with a head transplantation.
• 1970-"Dystopia" novel by"Ira levin"
contains the head transplantation.
• 2008- The x files: I want to believe Heads
transplans are being carried out illegally in
"west verginia"by a russian medical team.
• The book " The day after tomorrow"by
Allen folsom.
• There are some cultural influences like
lord Ganesha's head was transplanted by
an elephants head due to lord shiva's
anger which made to cut-off the head of
the Ganesh.
And other books,films etc.,were some
of the science fictioned one's and cultural
influences.
IS THINKING POSSIBLE WITHOUT A BRAIN?
Thinking is not only done by
the brain some parts of the body also
have the ability. We can say by some of
the examples:-
• Marine animal like Starfish,Jelly fish
doesn't have the brain.
• In colorado of America a hen lived for 18
months without it's head and made
everyone starred at it.
• In A.P recently a hen lived for about 6hrs without
head.
Then, how it is possible to live without
brain/head.This question may raise in your
mind? Yes,it is possible when the head was cut
off from the body the head was separated from
the body but in some cases the spinal cord in
which has the circuits which helps to store the
oxygen which helps to body parts to work
normally. There is an other example for this.
In florida of America a boy
named "Emate Bueyel" born without the
brain. Everyone thought he would die but
he lived and recently celebrated his first
birth day few months before and also able
to speak the words.
WHO IS THINKING?
Though the brain was not
there, but their is an ability to think because the
parts under the brain (or) the other body parts
has some ability to think. Especially,in the heart
there are some neurons which can able to think
and remember.
In a film a hero met with an
accident and lost eyes and then his eyes were
replaced by the eyes of a swamiji who was
murdered. Then the hero able tor remember the
last moments of the life. This shows the
heart/some body parts has thinking power and
also it remembers some moments of the life.
• Jerry’s heart transplantation to Carter
• 29 years women had heart transplant
surgery from another 19 years aged
women
• In these two conditions, the heart
had the ability to remember the last
moments of the life. This shows that the
heart has the thinking power and also it
remembers some moments of the life
CONCLUSION:-
• Although being very controversial,head
transplant (or) whole body transplant is a
subject that needs to be considered as it
is a theoritically feasible procedure and is
risky &also it is horrible yet incurable
condition.
THANK YOU
