How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Art Deco er en tidsepoke for stilhistorien(1920-1940).
Art Deco startet på alvor under Verdensutstilling i Paris
i 1925. Under Verdensutstillingen i Paris ble det vist
frem franske luksusvarer, det var også meningen at
franskmennene ville forsikre seg verden om at Paris
forsatt var sentralt når det gjaldt stiler etter
1verdenskrig.

Art Deco var en av hovedretningene i Europa
gjennom tidlig 1920-årene, den kom ikke til USA
før slutten av 1920-årene.
Noen av eksempler fra USA er Chrysler Building og
Empire State Building.

6. Chrysler Building, New York
Chrysler Building i New York er
en skyskraper på omtrent 320
meters høyde. I 1928 startet de
å bygge opp Chrysler Building.
Den stod ferdig i 1930. Denne
bygningen ble designet av
William van Alen - for
bilprodusenten Chrysler.
Chrysler Building er et av de
beste ekempler på Art Deco-
stilen.
Den kan i tillegg sees på filmer
som blant annet Spider-man

7. Empire State Building, New York
Empire State Building i New York
er også en skyskraper på 380
meter - 443 meter med antenna.
Bygget ble påbegynt i 1929 og
stod ferdig 1931. Denne
bygningen er ikke så langt unna
Chrysler Building. Toppetasjene
har blitt lyssatt med forskjellige
farger hver kveld, for å markere
ulike hendelser i byen. Måneder
etter 9/11 lyste bygningen med
rødt, hvitt og blått - fargene i det
amerikanske flagget
Som tidligere nevnt, er
toppetasjene lyssatt.
8. Folketeateret, Oslo
Folketeateret sto ferdig i Utenfor salen er det
1935, men på grunn av noe som kalles
dårlig økonomi var det ikke ''Folketeaterpassasjen''
mulig å starte teaterdriften. - en av byens travleste
Det ble derfor brukt som handlegater, den har
kinolokale, kinoen fikk navnet passasje mellom
''Verdensteateret'' - bare de Youngstorget og
første årene etter åpningen. Torggata med
Storgata.
Den egentlige
meningen, å skape et
teatertilbud for alle
folk, ble en realitet
først i 1952. Helt til 1959
var salen brukt som
det den var tenkt til.
Salen har plass opp til
1200 personer.
10. Eileen Gray (1878 - 1976)
Eileen Gray var født i Irland. Gray
brukte barndommen sin i London
og var blant en av de første
kvinnene til å bli tatt opp til Slade
School of Art, der hun tok opp
maleri i 1898 før hun gikk under
lærerplass. I 1902 flyttet Gary til
Paris, der henne raskt etablerte seg
som en av de ledende designerne
av lakkerte skjermer og dekorative
paneler.
Hennes neste store bidrag til å
utforme, var i arkitektur, henne
designet to hus for seg selv, 1 av
dem i Alpes Naritimes. Gray
designet også blant annet møbler
som;
Roquebrune(1932), Castellar(1927),
BarStool No1(1927), BarStool
No2(1928), Bibendium(1929) og mye
11. Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976)
Alvar Aalto var en finsk arkitekt
og designer, han er en av de
mest kjente finske arkitektene i
historien, han var banebrytende
når det gjaldt arkitekt. Noe av
hans kjente bygg han har
tegnet er Finlandiahuset i
Helsinki. Aalto har også tegnet
et boligområde som inneholder
blant annet;
kirke, rådhus, bibliotek, teater
og politistajon.
13. BarStool No1 (1927)
Det er Eileen Gray som står bak designet
av denne stolen ''BarStool No1'' som er
den enkleste av ''BarStool'' variantene
hennes. Den er justerbar, så det er mulig
å sitte på forskjellige høyder.
Materialene er; RAMME - forkrommet
stål, FOT - aluminium, LAKK -
(svart/hvit), TREKK - polyuretan med
bomull +skinn
14. Bibendum (1929)
''Ikke i historien i design finnes det lenestol
som kan sammenlignes med denne''. Ble det
sagt om ''Bibendum'' som også er designet
av Eileen Gray''. Den er harmonisk tross for sin
størrelse og forener majestetisk utrykk med
sjarm som ingen andre lenestoler.
Materialene er ; RAMME - forkrommet
stålrør, SETTET - bøkramme med gummi og
trekk + polyuretan med bomull
