Jean Dubuffet coined the term "Art Brut" in 1945 to describe art created outside official culture. Art Brut refers to art made by those untrained in art and untouched by cultural influences, such as works produced in psychiatric institutions. The first artist associated with Art Brut was Adolf Wolfti, who produced thousands of works while institutionalized. Dubuffet was interested in Wolfti's works and helped form the Compagnie de l'Art Brut in 1948 to collect such "brut art", with his collection eventually forming the permanent Collection de l'Art Brut museum in Lausanne.
