Retired four-star General Colin Powell will speak at Southeast Missouri State University as part of the University Speaker Series. Powell has had a distinguished career serving as National Security Adviser, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of State, and has received numerous military and civilian honors. Finance and accounting major Robin Frohn is looking forward to hearing Powell speak because Powell's admission of mistakes restored Frohn's faith in the integrity of some in the US government. Powell will discuss "Diplomacy: Persuasion, Trust, and Values" at the Show Me Center on October 2nd, and 20 students will have the opportunity to meet with Powell in a roundtable discussion.
The document describes the story of Jephthah, a mighty warrior who was expelled from his father's house by his half-brothers. When the Ammonites declared war on Israel, the elders of Gilead sought out Jephthah and asked him to lead their army. Jephthah questioned why they came to him now after expelling him, but agreed to fight as their head if God delivered the Ammonites to them. The elders agreed and Jephthah went with them to lead the army against the Ammonites.
The document criticizes those who commit various religious and social crimes. It highlights lying against the religion, neglecting orphans and the poor, lacking focus in prayer, and refusing to give charity as major offenses. It emphasizes that how one treats others and performs rituals like prayer and charity are reflections of the spiritual state of one's heart, and that denying accountability in the afterlife hardens the heart against human compassion. The overall message is that religious and social duties in Islam are interlinked.
The Greek organizations at Southeast Missouri State University have reinstated judicial boards for self-governance. Members of each Greek organization will serve on the boards to handle violations of recruitment, membership, or organizational rules. The aim is for Greeks to self-govern minor infractions, while major violations like hazing would still be sent to the Office of Student Conduct. The new boards will provide peer punishment that is meant to be educational rather than punitive toward the organizations.

SEMO exploring the option of adding sororityAndrea Gils
Southeast Missouri State University is exploring the possibility of adding a new sorority to campus as five of the six existing sororities are over their membership limits. The process of adding a new sorority would be formal and take time, involving forming an interest committee, analyzing recruitment numbers, and making a recommendation to the Panhellenic Council. While some worry a new sorority could take members from existing ones, university officials think having more options could benefit students and help "equalize" sorority sizes on campus.
