The film Arrival follows linguist Dr. Louise Banks who is enlisted by the army to communicate with aliens who have arrived on Earth in 12 ships. Louise and physicist Ian Donnelly are brought to an alien pod to attempt communication. Louise writes "human" and the aliens respond with a circular symbol. Over time, Louise translates the aliens' written language and discovers it allows seeing across time. When the aliens' message is translated to "use weapons", tensions rise, but Louise learns they meant humans could help them in 3000 years by understanding their language. The film shows Louise preventing war and having visions of the future due to understanding the alien language.
