I joined VICE as a news producer and correspondent in July 2013, immediately being
dispatched to Egypt to cover the coup against Morsi from the perspective of the Muslim
Brotherhood protestors in Cairo’s Rabia Square, broadcast as the three-part documentary
Egypt After Morsi.
In September 2013, I was smuggled into Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province to produce
and host the documentary Rojava: Syria’s Unknown War, spending two weeks following the
Kurdish-led YPG forces on a counteroffensive against jihadist and rebel groups in what was
then an almost uncovered front of the Syrian conflict.
In October 2013, I spent three weeks in northern Lebanon embedding with Sunni insurgents
in the city of Tripoli engaged in ethnic conflict with their Alawite neighbours for the
documentaries Warlords of Tripoli and Lebanon’s Illegal Arms Dealers. I also produced and
acted as second camera for the short film Hezbollah’s Hash Farms on cannabis cultivation in
the Bekaa Valley.
In December 2013, I travelled to South Sudan for a month to produce, host and act as
second camera on a series of dispatches covering the outbreak of the civil war, including a
rare frontline embed with government forces, later released as the longform documentary
Ambushed in South Sudan.
In March 2014 I led the first western TV crew to enter rebel-held Northern Syria for six
months, embedding with US-backed Syrian Revolutionaries Front rebels as they swept in to
recapture much of rural Idlib from retreating ISIS fighters. A world exclusive in itself, we also
broke the story of the CIA’s Train and Equip program to the Syrian rebels through interviews
with the SRF, later released in the documentary Wolves of the Valley.
In London, I oversaw the edit, scripted and voiced the first interview footage with Islamic
State fighters in Syria in Embedded with Al-Qaeda in Syria: ISIS and al-Nusra, as well as a
short documentary on Aleppo Aleppo: City of Ruins, both filmed by Medyan Daryeh.
Over one month in Afghanistan, I produced and hosted four short-form news dispatches on
the issues surrounding the country’s presidential elections, interviewing senior politicians,
warlords, civilians and security personnel in Kabul and Herat.
Back in London, I oversaw the edit for the film Nagieb Khaja film The Rise of British Jihadists
in Syria, as well as scripting it and utilising some interviews I conducted some months earlier
in Idlib.
Over the summer of 2014, I embedded with Islamic Front rebels in Aleppo’s Old City for two
weeks to produce the documentary Ghosts of Aleppo, at a time when very few Western
journalists were entering rebel-held areas. Immediately after leaving Aleppo, we travelled
into Hasakah province to embed with YPG fighters pushing a humanitarian corridor into
Islamic State-held territory to rescue Yezidi civilians from Mount Sinjar, the first western
journalists to take the difficult overland route to Sinjar. Once in northern Iraq, we produced
the first western TV news report on PKK fighters defending Kirkuk from ISIS, and followed
the Peshmerga’s assault on Mosul Dam and the defence of the Khazer frontline for short-
form news dispatches.
Over Spring 2015, I spent a month on the Peshmerga’s frontlines with the Islamic State in
Iraq’s Ninewa province, producing and hosting the longform documentary The Road to
Mosul, featuring what was then rare access to the heavily-restricted conflict zone
surrounding Mosul.
In May 2015 I managed freelancer Salam Rizk from London as he embedded with Jabhat al-
Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham fighters capturing the Syrian city of Jisr al-Shughour from
government forces, overseeing his safety in what was at times a difficult and dangerous
shoot, and overseeing the edit, scripting and voicing of the film Syria’s Rebel Advance, for
which Salam was shortlisted for the Rory Peck Award for News.
In the summer of 2015, I returned to Syria’s Hasakah province for two weeks to embed with
the YPG as they launched a counteroffensive against Islamic State fighters in the contested
city of Hasakah, producing and hosting three exclusive news dispatches from a little-covered
turning point in the war.
In Autumn 2015 I covered the refugee crisis in Lesvos and northern mainland Greece for
news dispatches, as well as producing five daily news dispatches from Israel/Palestine
during the increase in ethnic violence that threatened to become the third intifada.
In Spring 2016 I returned to South Sudan and the Ethiopian border region to interview rebel
leader Riek Machar and produce daily shortform news dispatches on the issues surrounding
his long-delayed return to Juba.
