What are the Fundamental Concepts? Holistic Approaches to Learning Communication Intercultural Awareness
Defining The Holistic Approach Disciplined study of traditional academic groups AOI is used to develop the interrelatedness between the subject areas Rigor with Relevance
Intercultural Awareness Development of Students’ attitudes, knowledge and skills about their own culture as well as other social and national cultures Foster tolerance, respect, empathy and understanding
Communication Command of expression both verbal and non-verbal Supports understanding and allows student reflection and expression
The AOI are perspectives that are at the core of MYP Approaches to Learning Community and Service Health and Social Education Environment Homo Faber
The Areas of Interaction… …are themes not subjects …pervade and recur throughout the 5 year program but we do it in 3 years.
The AOI pervade the subjects and are the vehicle of instruction in an MYP classroom… … and are also taught through; Interdisciplinary teaching and projects Whole school activities The MYP personal project
Approaches to Learning enables students to answer the following questions: How do I learn best ? How do I know ? How do I communicate my understanding ?
ATL Special Note Your relationship to your students is as a facilitator or a conduit for learning. “The guide on the side, not the sage on the stage”
ATL also includes the following: Organizational skills Communication Reflection Critical thinking skills Collaborative skills Information literacy Problem solving Conceptual understanding
Community & Service How do we live in relation to each other? How can I contribute to the community? How can I help others?
Community & Service Please note that community hours are established  by schools not the IBO Students also need to do a reflection as it pertains to community and service and this also serves as an assessment.
Health & Social Education How do I think and act? How an I changing? How can I look after myself and others? This AOI deals with relationships
Environment Where do we live? What resources do we need? What are my responsibilities?
Homo Faber By definition Homo Faber is the creative capacity of the human being. This AOI looks at human contribution in both context and as a part of an ongoing process. How do we create? What are the consequences of our creation?
MYP  Activity Have group discussion of the AOI Then decide which AOI best describes you.
MYP Activity Phase 2 Now let focus our perspectives from ourselves to a topic
