This document provides an overview of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and its Areas of Interaction (AOI). The IBMYP is a rigorous academic program that also focuses on developing students' approaches to learning, global citizenship, intercultural awareness, and communication skills. The six AOI - Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Health and Social Education, Environment, Homo Faber, and Communication - are themes that permeate the five-year program. Teachers facilitate interdisciplinary instruction and projects centered around the AOI to help students answer essential questions about how to learn and live together in relation to themselves, others, and the world.

9. The Areas of Interaction… …are themes not subjects …pervade and recur throughout the 5 year program but we do it in 3 years.

10. The AOI pervade the subjects and are the vehicle of instruction in an MYP classroom… … and are also taught through; Interdisciplinary teaching and projects Whole school activities The MYP personal project

11. Approaches to Learning enables students to answer the following questions: How do I learn best ? How do I know ? How do I communicate my understanding ?

12. ATL Special Note Your relationship to your students is as a facilitator or a conduit for learning. “The guide on the side, not the sage on the stage”

13. ATL also includes the following: Organizational skills Communication Reflection Critical thinking skills Collaborative skills Information literacy Problem solving Conceptual understanding

14. Community & Service How do we live in relation to each other? How can I contribute to the community? How can I help others?

15. Community & Service Please note that community hours are established by schools not the IBO Students also need to do a reflection as it pertains to community and service and this also serves as an assessment.

16. Health & Social Education How do I think and act? How an I changing? How can I look after myself and others? This AOI deals with relationships

17. Environment Where do we live? What resources do we need? What are my responsibilities?

18. Homo Faber By definition Homo Faber is the creative capacity of the human being. This AOI looks at human contribution in both context and as a part of an ongoing process. How do we create? What are the consequences of our creation?

19. MYP Activity Have group discussion of the AOI Then decide which AOI best describes you.

20. MYP Activity Phase 2 Now let focus our perspectives from ourselves to a topic

21. AOI Lesson Planning Activity Examine the AOI and the questions that pertain to it. Use the beaker of water as the topic for your subject area. Describe the lesson on paper. Note any problems/challenges that you may encounter. Discuss and Share
